It's not as bad as all that, OP...

Yes, there are a lot of retards commenting on YouTube (it's one of the most mainstream sites on the net, so that's a given), yes, some flaming goes on. Yes, a lot of comments are dumb questions or pointless drivel.

That's all true, but you contend that means that everything anyone ever says on that website is inherently worthless? No. I've had some interesting conversations, I've seen some keen observations, laughed at some good jokes and received kind compliments. Maybe I'm just adept at avoiding conflict but I've rarely been flamed and most of the 'bad' comments I've had are just dumb, not usually malicious. On my own videos, there are always more good than bad comments.

I love reading You Tube comments. They are a snap shot of humanity. It is amazing what people will say when their is no realistic social repercussions.

I like getting feedback on my videos, although I'll agree it's mostly negative or just a friend commenting. I'm sure that other people feel the same way, but because they're famous, they have to slog through the thousands of stupid comments people leave in their wake. But basically, they can be used for good or for bad.

Telling everyone else about how much you hate/love something is totally relevant to everything on Youtube.
Youtube is, after all, a site full of music and videos! Where better to share your useless opinion about Johnny Robert's latest hit single? Or indeed where better to rage at the Bieber fans, despite the mentioning of his very name only increases his fame, thus causing your best efforts to be in vain?

Youtube is all about sharing shit with people and letting people listen to music for free.
The stupid comments are just a bonus for people who want to not only share videos, but also opinions no one give a toss about, except themselves and their fellow fanboys/girls.

They're true intention is to allow you to comment on a video providing constructive criticism, usually for people starting video projects or the such. But some don't need that and people would just rather point out what they found most entertaining. That and like you said it's an easy troll market and the scum of the earth deem they're opinion most valid, so they have to express it in SOME way...

Amen to this.
Basically it's just the best for tool trolls in most videos.
Theres been countless times ive been spoiled of Anime, Tv Shows and such because a troll decideed to post in CAPS LOCK THAT X CHARACTER DIES.
And thats not even the most bastardish thing ive seen a troll do.

Most of the stuff i watch in YouTube are machinamas and Gmod videos.
And i constantly find new people who make stuff like that, and often with quite high quality, but aren't really popular. So when i post a comment, most if the time it's something positive that encourages them to make more and better stuff. Sometimes i even give hints and pointers, even though i haven't made any such videos myself. I've just watched a load of them.

However, i rarely comment on videos that have hundreds of comments already and a new one pops up every 10 seconds. Don't see the point in that.

Sometimes on RWJ`s videos id post a comment just cuz the vid was epic. by the time i write it and click "post" there were like 500 more comments X_X

Its fair to say, but making your own video to reply is generally more effective.
The majority of posts i make here and on youtube for example i don't get replies to, but as long as someone sees it and thinks about it if only for a second then i can consider it time well spent.

The shit of the internet has to go somehwere. 4chan gets enough of it, so now most of it gravitates to youtube (since Newgrounds, the Escapist and most other sites don't tolerate the mindless arguing).

I was thinking about this the other night actually.

Youtube is one of the biggest online communities, and seems to have little to no official moderation. What you get is a load of rubbish commentary, racism, arguing, bullshit claims, and general online disinhibition effect.

You then look at smaller communities like this one, with strict moderation, and you see (mostly) civilised conversation, discussions about different views, and general learning, guided by a primary interest.

Obviously these are very brief summarys, but I think there's an interesting study to be made here-maybe this is reminiscent of the real world? Maybe an overly strict government, that at least appears to be working in the direction of the people works best.. hmm?

They're not all bad. I had a very nice discussion about the history of Mortal Kombat with a guy on one of the MK9 videos. (S)He seemed pretty nice, we both learned new things in the process.

Yes, many YouTube comments are so infamously bad you can't even make a satire out of it, but this [https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/youtube-comment-censor/] significantly improved my browsing experience.
