YouTube to allow filtering of comments, users prove it's a smart idea.

I never thought I'd see the day that the internet celebrated active censorship. I can understand why it may be okay for kids channels but overall I see this as a negative thing. It's gonna be a pain being blocked for using word X on a certain channel without knowing what word X is considering word X may have worked on another channel just fine.

Also, it won't work. If Horde players can manage to figure out how to say the word "******" in a way that Alliance can read it, they can figure out how to bypass the YouTube filter.

But if channels start censoring keywords on an automatic basis then even sensible comments with such keywords would be automatically stripped from existence.
An illustration via the word 'cock':

Now I'm surely about to come across as cocksure or otherwise cocky, but I can't help but feel that censors go into the game only half-cocked. Surely we've all seen some cockamamie censor programs that jump on innocuous words like a cocker spaniel might jump on someone's leg. I know I've even seen the word 'Saturday' automatically censored because it had 'turd' in it. The cynic might even suggest that the first innocent casualties might fall before the first farmhands rise to the cock's crow of cock-a-doodle-doo. Automatic censors really can be quite cockeyed at times.

Now all that said, the custom factor of it does seem to alleviate more problems than it creates so long as the video owners use decent judgment calls.

Captcha: Fire and Brimstone. Aw hell, captcha, you don't have to be so melodramatic!

Youtube comments may finally be bearable again.
Not sure how they'd deal with slang and bad spellings, or bots who upvote their own comments.

And so the last bastion of freedom dies not with a bang but with a whimper :(
Sure there were vile and horrible comment's but that's what made them refreshing finally a place where anything could be said without fear-but now that is gone and silence is falling.

Whoa, hoss, not cool. What you want to block is important... just not in my words in this location!

I think there may be a touch of premature celebration here. This is the internet after all, and Life scumbaggery finds a way. I mean, I'm all for seeing things getting cleaned up, certainly youtube users could use a helping of Irish Spring mouthwash, but people can find ways through filters, and there just aren't enough human beings, baboons, and other modestly intelligent creatures to moderate the daily youtube bullshit tsunami.

Then again anyone moderating and in control of this could pull some serious trolling, which might be funny, but will definitely become annoying, like everyone making fucking references to "dishonest pastry offers" 4 years ago annoying.

You can not create or destroy a troll, you can only change their form. :p
So trolls are like matter? We must find a way to turn trolls into energy!

Put me into the camp that opposes this.

Yeah, Im saying it, free speech is free speech. Even if that speech is fucked up and disrespectful at times...

Mark my words, this ain't going to go the way you hope it does. What I forsee is using this to block criticism, since it seems most youtube creators cant seem to handle negative comments very well. (not all, but alot)

My only problem is if a channel that uses explicit language (think Roosterteeth or Achievement Hunter) would activate this. It would come off as hypocritical.

Well at the very least the ones that are there will not be covered by all the spam, so it'll look like an increase.

So most everyone here is exited to be embracing the worst aspect of extremist ideology (the desire to silence criticism)? Disappointing.

I hope that Youtube will at least have the courtesy of having "filters applied" being added to the video info. That way us sensible people can at least know who we should be losing respect for and how much.

That's the idea. Someone posts "first" and it goes through, but when someone posts "second" it gets blocked for no obvious reason. :D

I must admit that is a good way to go about it... until I also block "o"!
Doing this is not as straightforward as it looks...

Trolls are always worthwhile. They are much funnier on average than the typical poster, with drivel like "yeah, thing x (the thing commented on) is awesome!" passing for "quality commentary". It's not like erudite and highly worthwhile youtube comments can possibly be made in so few words no matter how well their intentions, and trolls remind us of that.

Remember that Socrates and Jesus were the trolls of their time, and their respective societies were worse off for murdering them. Nietzsche was a troll. Chomsky is a troll. Zizek is an utter troll.

Sure, it can be tempting to kill whoever is mocking you. But time and time again, history reminds us that however self-righteous we think we are, we are never so good that trolls cannot remind us of our flaws.

Embrace the troll, for the gadfly always keeps the demons away when the "good people" of the world are too busy for that task.

Just like you, the troll is taking time out of his day to make the best comment he possibly can. He just comes from a different perspective.

Murdering the trolls only proves that you've been blinded by your own self-righteousness.

Well, this should see a slight increase people trying to have a constructive discussion, I'm not expecting a miracle but it might help a little. I don't see any downsides yet.

*has a hand full of troll bait* Well, now what am I suppose to do with this???

On a more serious note, great! Now, any fanbase can be shown with a glimmer of light in the comment section of any video... relating to said fanbase, of course...

Also, for some reason, I want to call this new feature a "devil's advocate" somehow... I don't know why yet...
