Team Ninja wanted to make a hardcore Metroid game, but they were cock-blocked at every step by Sakamoto.

They were originally set to make a 2D Metroid game. Sakamoto wanted a 3D game.

Then they were going to make a 3D game that used the full Wii control options: WiiMote + Nunchuck. Sakamoto vetoed this, wanting it to be WiiMote only.

Despite these restrictions, the actual gameplay (aside from the damnable pixel hunts, and the mediocre forced first-person perspective instances) was pretty good. The real problem with the game is the storyline and Samus' characterization...again, all Sakamoto's fault, NOT Team Ninja's.

It's too bad we never got to see the Metroid games that Team Ninja WANTED to make, and were instead only given the ones that Sakamoto allowed them to make.

Sakamoto may have instrumental in the early success of the series, but he's long since become a hindrance. He made Fusion way too linear, he attempted to inject linearity into Zero Mission via the hints provided by the Chozo Statues, and then there was his butchery with Other M. Hell, by the time they were making Other M, he was so out of touch with the series that he didn't understand why Team Ninja had made her suit purple when she got the Gravity Suit, and made them substitute the "Gravity Feature" for the actual Gravity Suit. At least they got away with making the purple aura when it's activated.
