Wow, Yahtzee is a Dresden fan apparently (otherwise I can't see how he'd be familiar enough with the series to make that comment). One of my personal favorite series as well.
That said I figured this game was at best discount bin fodder when I first saw it. It seemed to me that it was something designed by committee when they noticed the success of paranormal/teen romances being turned into TV shows and so on, and decided to go with a plot that is both safe and fits in with that general vibe.
I actually heard the "combat" called a really bad "stealth assassination" game, like they were going for spiritual "Assassin's Creed" but had no idea what they were trying to do. Of course then again when it comes to Assassin's Creed I tend to be lousy at it, and inevitably it turns into "ooops, well, stealth failed again, and I actually have no idea why" followed by me killing everyone and then hiding on an isolated rooftop for five minutes. In playing "Black Flag" in particular I have absolutely no idea what I do to set off the guards half the time. "We must murder you in the streets for the horrible crime of walking in front of us".... the point here being that maybe if they had actually added "combat" mechanics as opposed to "sneak and poke" mechanics into "Soul Suspect" it would have been better, given that even the guys who are masters at it seem to have their problems with implementation (or at least communicating what went wrong).
