I have never, nor will ever understand the appeal of effing pokemon to people over the age of 12. I'm pretty sure I was around that age when this bs all started and even then I thought it was stupid.

I do like yahtzee's theory of it all being one giant illusion and the actual reality being a horrifying nightmare lol. I'd love a game all about collecting rabies ridden rodents beating the crap out of each other. =P

Pokemon is an awful game, I only played red pokemon in elementary school because it was the only game that was any good on the gameboy color.
Isn't blue the exact same game with different exclusive pokemon?
How can red be the ONLY good one if blue is the exact same thing....?
Also, it wasn't on Gameboy color, it was on gameboy....
No it was on the Gameboy colour as things were coloured.. it just happens to work on the Gameboy as well... Also there was virtually no difference between red and blue other than your starting pokemon.. So I wouldn't count them as two different games, the reason I said Red and not just Pokemon is because then you wouldn't have any Idea about which game I am talking about.

I can't believe someone is still trying to make money from Pokemon outside Japan. And WTF is with Yahtzee reviewing games that most likely only sell a couple of hundred copies outside Japan?
I cant tell if your a troll or just plain stupid.

You know what I did every generation? I looked at the pokemon I used last generation and said "Right, I wont touch you guys. Time to get aquainted with the new guys"

A lot of people called Gen V a rehash of Gen I and all I can say is, HA!

What? It's a rehash because there's a rattata/pidgey type of pokemon? Yeah there are some pokemon in Gen V that are clearly there for the familiar element. Guess what? 90% of those suck balls.

Gollurk is a Ghost/Ground type, a typing not seen in the Metagame till Gollurk, he is a GIANT FUCKING ROBOT that specializes in punching everything really hard in the face.

Bisharp is a Steel/Dark Pokemon comprised entirely of weapons, it and it's pre-evolution Pawniard are ment to be a Homage to Sentai/Riders from Japanese Toku.

Mienshao is a Kung-Fu Weasle that is Honourable and elegant compared to the 80's Punk style of Scafty a Dark/Fighting type with a hoodie made of it's own shedded skin.

Darmantian is a powerful fire type that has the unique gimmick of switching to Fire/Psychic and using an entirely different attacking stat (Special Attack over Attack)making it harder to predict whether your opponent is playing for Zen Mode or for Sheer Force.

The Bug types, previously only considered worthy of note due to Scizor and Heracross. Got a LOT of Love, no Caterpie and Weedle knockoffs this Gen! Electric Spider! Knight Beetle! Ninja Slug! Sin against God! Volcano Mothra!

Of course there are the Expies, the crap pokemon That are basically handed out for free at the beginning of the game, the vendor trash.

But behind them are the real stars of the show, the out there super pokemon who not only look awesome but fight awesome.

The only real knock to Gen 5's introductions are the Starter Pokemon, I mean for christ sake Blaziken just got into the Uber Tier, Infernape is still tearing up OU like nobodies buisness, I understand why they made Tepig Boss (He's Zhu Baije from Journey to the West, AKA Piggy a companion of the Monkey King Sun Wukong AKA Monkey who served as the basis for Infernape) They wanna continue that theme, I can't stop them. The problem is Tepigs line is just not worth it compared to it's big brother Fire/Fighting types.

EDIT: Which of course isn't to say the Starter Pokemon don't look Badass, Emboar is a manly fire bearded Pig Wrestler and Samurott looks like a wizdened old samurai Sea Lion, but you know for the meta game they aren't in OU

Fire/Fighting is a damn good typing actually, It's single handedly made Blaziken and Infernape the top two Fire Starters in Pokemon (Shut the fuck up Charizards typing kills it, if it was ACTUALLY Fire/Dragon it would be murder)

Now having said all that, could pokemon be done differently? Hell yes! At the risk of pissing off the entire metagame community!

Seriously You control the trainer in a 3rd person action view, your pokemon is constantly out with you, With the classic Controller the 4 Face Buttons are each of your pokemons attacks, Tapping R Brings up your bag to use items from and pressing L brings up your pokemon list.

Boom Pokemon becomes an entirely different monster to what it was, bringing it's own unique metagame to it (still has the basis of 4 Attacks, Stats, Natures etc. but instead of Turn Based it's focused around Action gameplay) Hell you could even keep the original metagamers happy by introducing a Turn Mode which simply changed the style of game back into the Turn Based they know and love. if Triple/Rotation battles have taught me anything the Metagame community does not shun a new battle mode to figure out things for.

And of course the games have changed each generation. Do you know how hard it is for me to play R/S/E/FR/LG after having played in the 4th and 5th Gen? it's an entirely different monster at the core mechanics!

But for all the people who say Pokemon Never Changes

From the infinite TM use of B/W, to the infinite item bag after R/B/Y's STUPID limit, to the addition of Abilites in Gen 3, The Special split in Gen 2, the Special/Physical MOVE split in Gen 4, and even the removal/addition of new HMs for world exploration, to the key item mapping for easy Bike use.
Thats not really that much in terms of the programming dude. And each of those changes took them almost an entire gen to do!
Even the special split and special/physical move split didn't seem to effect the tactics all that much. It maybe changed how well some pokemon did against others, buts thats not even a change so much as it is balancing the pokemon. or unbalancing them, i don't know.
In the end the pokemon games are still total cliche. An actual change would be say changing the 4 fight moves system to something else, like first person shooting. That example is probably a stupid one but you get the point. Or if they added a rpg element like being able to talk to people instead of just being mute (getting yes/no speech options doesn't count!)

No, they werent gameboy color games. ALL gameboy game had color to them if played in the gameboy color.
They were gameboy games, if they were infact gameboy color games like you're saying they wouldnt be backwards compatiable with the older models of the games boy.

Also, they're two different games in same generation.

So....yeah, you're wrong on both accounts.

Besides, "catching them all" is no longer viable...or even the point, really. It's all about competitive play, with the advent of wi-fi in D/P/P.
Pokemon is now the middle school version of COD and Halo?
Do you know what Pokemon REALLY is?

It's secretly the deepest competitive strategy game ever.

IT HAS TIER LISTS

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah... wait you aren't kidding.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has tier lists too. That doesn't really indicate anything.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is still way better than pokemon actually. I don't know why it gets so much hate while pokemon doesn't.
Also, at least Yu-Gi-Oh! DOESN'T HAVE FUCKING LAND CARDS so I don't really see why MTG gets so much more respect than it either.
Nope. Instead, it has field cards, which are a lot like land cards.
In what way? They have nothing to do with summoning.

This week, Zero Punctuation dispels some notions on why Pokemon hasn't been reviewed before.

Watch Video
Yahtzee secretly likes Dynasty warriors (Just kidding).

I honestly thank God by some miracle of man yaht'z dodged dynasty, romance, and all incarnation of the three kingdoms.

But back on topic ^^, who in the blue hell really plays pokamon (That goes here)? I mean a game review for it's fans are suppose to be for something they might honest to God pick up. Jesus man what's next are there any barbie games you care to cover next?

I really hope this "I'm going to review games for the under age crowd, because their as easy to play as they are to pick" on goes out of style and soon.
The site is full of Pokemon fans. What makes Pokemon so bad?

Jesus tapdancing christ who took a diarrhea dump in your cheerios? That first line was a jest aimed at the series. Did I say they have stagnated? No, so don't go and start assuming crap about me that you don't know.

All I said was after 151, there was just way too many for me to really be vested in the games. Especially when they start involving having to drive 2+hrs to a gamestop just to pick up a celebi for your last generation pokemon game, just so you can use it to unlock Zoa... the fox-ditto pokemon, in White and Black. Or Victini. All the pokemon should be available within the game, not cut out to be handed out at a few events here and there.

And I say this for the same reason I say Dragon Quest 9 was a horrible game once you beat it. All those post-game features were designed with having a large number of people who owned it and a DS, kept the DS with them, and left the game in sleep mode as they traveled via public transportation. I.E, Japan. In America however, you aren't going to see a special treasure map released from PAX East anytime within a year get even close to halfway across the US.

Relying on people to spread a thing through their DS in America, is like trying to sell generic-fps shooter on the 360 in Japan, you'll nab a few people here and there, but it isn't going to spread much further than that.

So just chill brolax.
Brolax status? Holy shit man.
I got Zorua really easy by just asking for one of the GTS. Took less than a day to obtain one after I had asked for it. All the Pokemon were never available in just one game. Trading is highly encouraged and has been part of the game since day one. Event Pokemon have been here since the beginning too, as Mew was released later on.

But honestly, if you haven't played the series in such a long time, then what do you know?

Hale and landwalker have good comics (for entirely different reasons) I'm personally doing two Nuzlokces right now. Flora Sky, a rom hack of Emerald (5 Dead, Timburr, Rattata, Pidegy, Bidoof, Sewaddle. Nicknames Ares, Mercury, Skywarp, Shirly and Tailor respectivly) and one of Diamond (No dead yet, but I only have a Monferno and Shinx and just reached Jubilife)

Trust me that keeping your team alive in Flora Sky requires a bit of effort considering Maxie was packing HEATRAN and Iris (now the 6th Gym Leader and packing Flying Types instead of Dragons) is packing Tornadus. I mean I didn't lose any pokemon to them but seriously what the christ game?

Yeah the flying/electric type took me by suprise the first time I challenged that gym too. Whats worse is that she has 3/4 of them each with a TM move called Volt switch which damages you and swaps with a different member in her team, and here I thought that the Elite four were cheap.
I was actually pleased for a genuine challenge this game. The volt switch strat actually brought a smile because prior to this game, everything ran off an AI roulette. It was refreshing to see the computers actually try to plan things..... then again, if they did, and set things up this way, it might make the game too hard for the younger bracket.

What did catch me by surprise is those squirrels knowing aerial ace (Or whatever flying move they knew). Managed to take out my grass type.

Yeah, the climbing the tower thing pissed me off too.

For all its flaws, Pokemon's really satisfying, watching your cute little animals grow up to be world-crushers. Though the Elite 4 is really friggin' overpowered this time around.
Really? This is one of the first times where I beat the Elite Four on my first(second try, but that time I ended up facing N and Team Plasma's Castle, so I don't count it)

Congratulations on finding out that every single Pokemon game is identical.

Just one question. Why would anyone use a full team and actually pay attention to the battle strategy?
You get your starter, and you NEVER change pokemon. Kill every single trainer with just that one pokemon, and you won't have trouble in gyms since you will be twice the level of your opponent. (The first gym is an exception, but this game makes it easy by giving you one of the element monkeys, of your opposite element, right next to the first gym.)
They kinda changed it in this one. The EXP you receive is now based on your own level comparative with your opponent's. You could fight something level 50 and get 6000 exp with a level 40, or get 1200 with a level 60. Of course, it doesn't help that they give you an experience boosting item that was pretty much the rarest item in the game in the previous gens like halfway through the game...

Was kinda waiting for him to address the "why don't the bad guys just use 40 pokemon each" thing since they're breaking the law everywhere else, but good overall. It really hasn't changed, though thanks for the heads up on the electric gym.
The bigger question is why they use Pokemon at all when bullets would seem far easier and less hassle.
The fan base has a theory on that. Guns don?t exist, think about it, once people figured out how to tame creatures that could cause earthquakes or shoot lighting why would anyone need guns?
Be... Because it would be far easier and less of a hassle. Seriously? He... Well... I mean, he just said that dude. : /
So? You're saying, it'd be easier to build a non-existant weapon, from out of the blue, rather then just say: "use the hyper cannon"
