When I saw the title, I'd assumed it was another indie game double bill. The word "and" is ruined for me forever.

I'd never heard of this game before. Interesting that you made a Dark Souls connection mainly from tone, aesthetic and difficulty level rather than solely from gameplay.

I've never heard of this one. Maybe I'll take a look if it comes out on PC. The art style looks serviceable but shaky like another of those hand drawn games made by someone who isn't quite good enough at drawing to be doing it like that.

This game is keeping me tide over until Dark Souls 3, even if in so many, many ways it's literally just "Dark Souls in 2D."
I do enjoy how it uses player corpses, though. Seeing them swinging from gallows or seeing their heads impaled on spikes in a boss's lair does more for me than Souls' bloodstains. (Not that I don't enjoy the bloodstains, mind.)

Nice. I saw Super Bunnyhop's assessment of it earlier this week. Can't wait for it to come out on Steam.

That's pretty bad ass actually. Dark Souls manages something like this with Petrification (Curse), which left statues of fallen players in your world, but it was isolated to only a handful of areas. Made for a haunting spectacle though... it took me quite a while to realise those blighted lizards weren't as threatening as they first seemed.

Definitely going to give this a go sometime, but not right now... money is reserved for Dark Souls 3.

Sounds like my kind of Souls... as in, it will make me salty that money is of no issue...

Other than that, jokes on you! Licking myself just causes more seamen to appear in floods...

I think that's the quickest turn around Yahtzee has ever had on a game at the very end. Now I am curious... I also enjoy me some Souls and SOTN.

Fun fact:
This game uses Google translations and forces players to use them by not providing a way to change the language. Unless you change your system language which is always fun.

i decided my CS:GO joke was worth writing down while it was fresh in my mind and since both the word salt and the word sanctuary began with a capital letter and the thumbnail had two game covers on it i assumed there were two ames named "Salt" and "Sanctuary" respectively. the name "salt and sanctuary" is also rather odd it sounds like what i would get when entering a russian bunker (badum tish)

Well Blimey, Yatzeh doesn't like Labyrinth? Or did he just find the reference not appropriate?

I'm fine with games copying the Souls series as long as they're good. Some have failed at this, but this game looks like it is good enough.

I got this the day it came out. Beat it, got the platinum for it, and am currently taking a break from it. For anyone wondering, yes, this is about as close as you can get to Dark Souls in the 2D realm. Yahtzee's review is pretty spot on in a lot of ways. Really could have used a map, some weapons are stupidly overpowered, rolling at just the right moment, etc...If you're looking for something new to play while we all wait for Dark Souls III, this is certainly a game I recommend.

Really, my only gripe has to do with what Yahtzee mentioned at the start. The whole thing with the Princess. Obviously there's more going on on the island, but by the time you get to the end of the game, things are...well, let's just say that I think they could have flushed out the story a bit more. I'm still not entirely sure what happened. The game is trying to do something vague and mysterious, but it kind of falls into Lords of the Fallen trap: missing info is not the same as vague, figure-it-out-fans story.

Wait, is that the way you Western folk pronounce "chibi", or is Yahtzee just too English?

Well shit, I kinda want to buy the game just for that (The rest being that it's a Dark Souls clone that's actually decent) because I do like the concept of bloodstains, but they're not too atmospheric. A corpse swinging from the roof and or a head impaled on a spike is a very effective way to say "Another player was here and got their shit fucked."

It sounds like a good game for being a rip off in the same way Titan Souls was a pretty good game for being a rip off of Shadow of the Colossus.
