Nice to know Yahtzee enjoyed the game. It is weird of him liking a games multiplayer more then the single player but it's fine. Also I don't blame him refusing to call it ink when it's more like paint cause I had that issue at first.

See Yahtzee, it's not that hard to make a fair review about a Nintendo game. And by fair I don't exactly mean, "he likes it".

Sounds like classic Nintendo. Get the core gameplay right and then fuck up the online.
Except they didn't. Unless you're talking about the whole "rotate the maps" thing. I consider that more akin to Animal Crossing where you have to wait a few days for certain stores to be available. It's part of an incentive to keep you playing the game. Whether it works for a shooter or not is debatable, sure, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they fucked up the online with it.
I would. The same two maps gets boring if you've already committed an afternoon to siting down and playing a competitive shooter. There are also multiple issues with how joining friends works, or rather how difficult it all is, and in general, just goes to show how far behind Nintendo's online gaming model is compared to the Xbox One or the Playstation 4.

Splatoon is a decent game with all of the fun quirks that make it very Nintendo-ey, Nintendo itself may need to do better with it's online gaming, but this game is a step in the right direction.

Eh. Squids make Ink. There are actual Ink rollers and colored Ink in real life, so using that in the game seems fine. I almost think he decided to call it Paint instead and make Ink puns just as the gimic of the video, like doing some in lymric or with accents, or Tomb Raider without mentioning boobs.

And yeah, for anyone who thinks that the Single Player is worth the experience, they're totally wrong. To use another series I just mentioned, Smash Bros Brawl and, to a lesser extent Smash 4, are both totally fun as hell in the single player, and can be taken to online single player rather easily. It just so happens that it also happens to have among the greatest multiplayer experiences ever devised in the electronic media, at least until we can get force-feed back genitals and do e-orgies.

Splatoon's single player, in regards to it's multiplayer, is, to use a phrase Yahtzee used, "a tiny irrelevant mouse, clinging to the back of a roaring lion wearing a jet-pack". Anyone without an internet connection will definitely want to skip Splatoon, or do no more than rent it before taking it back. Anyone with an internet connection, and most likely being able to read this note at all, should definitely give Splatoon a try, it not an outright buy, assuming they have a WiiU.

Quick Edit: As for the online, I wouldn't say that the low number of maps is an issue now, so long as they continue to abide by a promise to release more of them in updates. I will note that the friend match-making is currently just barely above shit, and it will be nice if they ever fix that.

I guess I was correct in thinking this game looked fun. I'l be sure to play it once Splatoon 2 comes out. Or Spla2oon or whatever it will be called.
Really looks like shit to me. It's a single-weapon console-shooter with a focus on shooting the static environment over other players. I'm sure it's extremely polished, but the core concept is one of the worst in recent memory.

Concepts are meaningless on their own. The execution is what determines if it's good or not.

You can polish a turd, but it'll still be a turd. Execution won't make a good game out of a bad idea.

Monolith Soft is a Nintendo first party studio bought several years ago. In 2007 to be more prices. So it's a Nintendo game, a new IP. Unrelated to their other IPs.
Gambarion made Pandora's Tower, at Nintendo's request. The IP is owned by Nintendo. It's a new Nintendo IP, unrelated to their other IPs. Same goes for The Last Story and Mistwalker and the W101 and Platinum Games. Both IPs owned by Nintendo.
Not sure if IS is a 1st or 2nd party Nintendo studio, but they are working exclusively for Nintendo since they were created back in 1986 and everything they make is paid and owned by Nintendo.

All of the games I listed are are new IP's, owned by Nintendo.

Also as for Wii Party, I actually meant to write Wii Sports. But even Wii Party is a new IP.
That's what happens when people don't pay attention or try to create arbitrary limitations because they realize the facts are not in their favor. It's not that Nintendo doesn't creat new IPs, it's that they aren't allowed to because that ruins the illusion of Nintendo being some old fogey that is out of touch with the world when in fact they're more cautious about getting into certain things because they realize slippery slopes could happen. Such as with DLC which they saw how exploitative and lazy devs were and didn't do that. They saw the issues of online multiplayer such as people ignoring most of the maps and weapons for arbitrary reasons and decided to design the game to avoid that. They essentially used an entire gaming industry as a beta tester to see if trends would continue or just vanish into nothingness as well as to see what worked and what didn't.

I was mostly under the assumption that Nintendo didn't create a lot of new ips because most of the time, they can pitch some new concept or idea easily under the line of an already existing franchise, for better (Smash Bros, Luigi's Mansion) or worse (Kirby's Epic Yarn, Starfox Adventures). I'll certainly acknowledge that, while part of me wants to say low hanging fruit, the Wii Series of games is a valid ip, as is admittedly Tomodachi Life. Even still, it's a token game here or there that's entirely new and that is developed entirely by Nintendo itself, rather than a 2nd or 3rd party studio (and on that note, I've got a good argument for the difference between 1st and 2nd party. Age of Ultron is totally a Marvel Movie. It just so happens that it's being bank rolled and then making money for the House of Mouse. It certainly isn't a standard Disney Movie. For that matter, the same can be said for Pixar as well, which is why Disney went back to them after Chicken Little).

But I wouldn't say that they had the forseight to see around the mistakes and money grabs other companies make. If they did, then the WiiU would probably outsell both the Ps4 and Xbone combined. Not to mention they wouldn't release consoles not only ahead of the others before the next generation officially begins, but even before they themselves have new games ready to launch on it.

Nintendo just seems to do their own thing. Some times this is the best thing that can ever happen, and sometimes even Nintendo misteps. Nintendo reminds me a bit of Dumbledore, in that no one ever understands them, yet at their worst they're doing okay, and at their best they dwarf everything around them.

I was under the assumption that the map restiction choice was to ensure that those who played gained a great fundamental understanding of the maps in the unranked multiplayer, so that they would be ready to rock and roll during the ranked battles. The weapon problem will actually probably affect Splatoon, too. I suspect it will be a matter of time before, at the very least, certain individual weapons will start to be used less and less; some of the snipers for example come with similar abilities but with the edition of a scope for better aiming.

As for online multiplayer... well, honestly, the online's been Nintendo's biggest weakness for far too long. Even though I more than enjoy local multiplayer better than anything else, they could have had a better online stance years earlier than they did.

I'd hesitate to say any idea is inherently good or bad (unless we're talking about an idea that's racist or otherwise harmful, I suppose) as a concept alone. Any idea can sound amazing or terrible depending on how you phrase it (did you know people actually like a game in which you fight nothing but bosses after spending an hour riding across barren land with no music between each one? How about the game about moving low-poly cubes?), but they have no qualiy, positive or negative, as just an idea.

@Bih-Kira, I think the difference is in recognizing whether something is First Party, or Second Party, even though that isn't exactly a term used much in the industry, due to the fact that the publishing company retains such a level of control over the second party that it is basically part of them. Most of the above are on a technical level Second Party, but such things normally aren't recognized as such. Not quite fully Nintendo, the way Mario, Link, Samus, and Pikachu and friends are, but close cousins. Hell, even Donkey Kong was born from and still made by a Second Party Company, so he's like a First Cousin Once Removed.

Wii Part is part of the "Nintendo Wii" series, including Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, and other "Wii" games.
No, it's actually a well defined line between first and second party.
First part is something that is owned by the company. Monolith Soft is owned by Nintendo, they are as much first part as Nintendo EAD.
Game Freak is second party. They are not owned by Nintendo, but they make games almost exclusively for Nintendo. Naughty Dog was a Sony second party developer from 1996 to 2001 until Sony bought them.

First party is owned by the company, second party isn't, but they are an exclusive developer. Rare Software was a Nintendo second party developer for a long time until they were sold to Nintendo. Honestly, saying that Monolith Soft isn't a 1st party developer is like saying Retro games isn't a first party developer, or that Sakurai isn't a Nintendo developer because he doesn't work for Nintendo EAD.

So all of the games I've listed are Nintendo first party games, made in the past what? 7 years? Also bunching up all the Wii games is extremely unfair. Some of them are so different from each other hat they only touching point is that they use Miis. You can't tell me that WiiFit and WiiParty are the same IP. They are fundamentally different games. I accept Wii Sport, Party and Sport Resort being under the same umbrella because they are party games consisting of many mini games.

And it's extremely unfair to say that they aren't 1st party games because they didn't derivative from existing IPs, but then later complaint that they only make new games based on their existing IPs. You're saying new different games don't count, but then say they don't make any new games. "Why aren't they making new games? No, all the new games don't count because I said so!"

Yes, Nintendo is extremely slow to adopt new things and they usually make new games by seeing if it can be an existing IP and making new IPs only if they can't use a old one. But that's not a reason to deny all the cool new stuff they make, that people ignore. You know why they make a lot of Mario games and advertise those games the most? Because people don't buy the non-Mario and Zelda games. Pandora's Tower was a freaking awesome game, it sold bad. The Last Story was a nice JRPG, didn't sell good. Xenoblade did well and people showed they want more of it, Nintendo made Xenoblade X. Last F-Zero sold badly, Nintendo took it as people not wanting more. Even Miyamoto was surprised that people want more of the game when it sold so badly, which is the reason he said to wait for it, it might happen.

Wait wait wait!

Before I watch the video, I want to try out my "Yahtzee reviews a Wii U game" drinking game:

--Take a shot when he makes fun of Nintendo fans in general
--Take a shot when he says Nintendo rehashes their franchises
--Take a shot when he remarks about the Wii U's hardware being underpowered
--Take a shot when he complains about the Wii U gamepad
---Two shots if the game is 100% compatible with the Wii U Pro controller

Wish me luck!
Annnnnnd now im drunk . . . . .

You have betrayed all of squid kind. Purge the human! Rend it in twain with noodly appendages! Burn the remains as best you can, but it's alright if you can't what with us being in water and all. Don't worry too much about the salt. I'm fairly sure a saline solution will suffice.

the way the map system is right now is so you can have a chance to learn the maps and with a new map comming every week(according to nintendo), it wont take long until you have mastered all maps
I learned all the maps for Team Fortress 2 because I was able to choose which one I wanted to play on. Likewise, I thought the End of the Line map was rather easy to understand, but that's another issue all together.

OT:
Splatoon looks like an interesting game, but I don't think I can justify buying a console to play it. I guess this is where friends with their heads' stuck up Nintendo's ass come in handy. Play the game without spending any money.

Curse this game for having such a catchy theme song!! *Shakes fist menacingly. Mutters playing the song on the splatoon 3ds theme.*
Honestly even Nintendo level PVP I'm not interested in.
