Ok so if anyone has ever seen any of my other MMO ideas, like my one for the Warhammer MMO, I tend to think about these things alot and have decided to submit an MMO idea to you all for your viewing pleasure. So here we go.

My latest idea for an MMO of sorts is a game based off of one of my favorite books, the zombie survival guide. I know many people have read it so I will do less of the explain everything as I go. The game would start in a way the I think would be completely funny for all involved. So the server is up (it would only have one server like EVE) and as this game starts everyone who is signed up to play starts in the cities and towns of the games world. This world will be INCREDIBLY expansive (as in the type of big that we can not accomplish with current gaming technology) and will feature a very realistic setting different parts to represent all of the major styles of modern societies, so North American/European urban and rural areas, middle eastern cities that are still "third-worldish", african villages, asian island chains, arctic, and so on. Now upon the start of the game, every player is given a random character generated by the game. This will include where they live, what their job is, their possessions and wealth, everything. Yes some people will be luckier than others but all in all it will make the game more interesting.

So the game starts at the very beginning of what the book calls a Class 4 outbreak, where zombies are over running major cities and starting to take over the earth. Then they players are left to do whatever they can to survive. Of course many will die as they try to figure out a plan, but a good number will quickly do things such as secure their houses and appartment, attempt to stockpile supplies and other common "survival strategies".

Now it must be stated before moving any further that this game is very advanced from current technology, so some of the interfacing and expansiveness is not currently possible. But players in this game will be able to do anything they can do in real life. So they can steal things, make things, try to fix things, everything is destructible if it is in real life, the works.

So at this point in the game some different things have happend. Due to the random nature of the character generation, the players with rich characters might never play, or have become the cornerstones of survival groups because of their access to materials. Gun store owners might have immediately tried to go out and fight the zombies and died, or fortressed themselves up. You just cant tell so every time the game restarts it will be cool and different.

Now its time to see what players can think up for surviving this game. Oh yes the goal is survival. At the start of the game, you might see the players who fortress up in their house, but at some point their supplies will run out and they are done for. The real strategy for this game is to see how well players can come up and execute a plan together.

Now as for actual gameplay it will work something like this. You get one character for your account at a time, no more. And this character only lasts for the current game and if he dies he is dead. If your starting character dies, you will respawn with a new random person(but only a very average person) at some random place in the game without a lot of zombies, giving you the chance to try and make it somewhere before you are eaten again.

Now each game would run for a certain amount of time (maybe 6 months or something?) in which they players have to survive. The ones who can keep their starting character alive the entire game actually win, but the others who dont can still play and have fun. But the trick is that the game will always be running and your character will always be in the world unless they die. So when you log off, there is the distinct chance that you could be eaten while your character is "sleeping".

As the game progresses all sorts of things will have to happen. People will have to find ways to get supplies, such as food and water, medicine, and resources. The way the zombies work is just like in the survival guide so you cant just go running around or stand in a group killing them, because MILLIONS will come if given enough time. This means that long term strategy will play a huge key in this game.

I could go on and on but I believe you can see what kind of game I am getting at. It would basically be a real life simulator of a specific event. I would love to see what people could do with a game like this. Also I would love to see what me an my friends could come up with hehe.

Sorry about this being very poorly written. I didnt actually organize this, it was just me writing from my own head.

Sounds good, but you would need a super computer ro play it, or pack it full of loading screens. It would also take forever to install. also instead of randomizing characters, i would make it so that a person could create his own character, but still randomizing their job, place they live and econimic situation.

Sounds good, but there are many flaws. I won't list them here because no one will read this anyways.

The random economic situation would suck. Seriously, start everyone fairly level otherwise it just wouldn't be fun for someone who starts off as a tramp seeing a multimillionaire arms-dealer fly by in his helicopter using implanted Gatling guns to mow down hordes of zombies, before returning home to shag his supermodel and relax in a solid gold tub filled with champagne, while his mantress (mansion + fortress) mows down zombies with its emplaced cannons.

Other than that, sounds epic.

The main things I have issue with are the Six Month-long games, the Randomization and the Off-chance you might be eaten while logged out.

Xiado, only problem is Samurai would most likely commit seppuku instead of assimilating.

There was an article in Game Informer a while back that paired famous game designers with famous videogame concepts. One developer thought that a MMO zombie game would be a good idea. It consisted of moving from place to place(starting in a hotel and moving on to supermarkets, gun stores, etc.) the concept though was that your team would have the course of 24 game hours (or like a hour in realtime) to survive. Teams would be forced to move around the city, since supplies will constantly run out, and the team with the most survivers wins. its great in theory, but when such a game is made, the problem of it becoming to linear and limited makes it feel like your repeating yourself every time you play.

Suggest this in 20 years time and you might have more luck. We all have thoughts of future games like this but like you said, we just don't have the technology yet.

If the zombies got into my house, or I needed supplies, I would travel across the rooftops!

I'm sure most zombie fans who've read enough zombie fiction and/or seen enough movies have envisaged their perfect zombie MMO, and I'm sure most can appreciate that the whole concept is just so huge and complicated it's not worth even attempting to write it all down. Exanimus may do it, but I doubt it'll be anywhere near perfect.

I'm happy enough with Zombie master and the prospect of left4dead.

As for a Zombie MMO, I think that the idea of a randomly spawning character is brilliant. Perhaps physical design should be incorporated, but a random previous occupation could keep things fun. I also think that characters should spawn from survival shelters, random bunkers across the land that housed the character, where each player starts off the same way with a limited supply of food and weapons taken from the bunker. They leave the bunker for a randomly generated reason as well.

From the bunker, they then must travel to a Compound. If they die, they must start again at a bunker with a new character. If you had anything valuable in a safe stash, its left you your new character in the old ones will.

Reaching a compound is a players first objective, taking their character across the land to a safe compound. These areas are completely safe, well fortified against the zombie hoards. From compounds, you can log off, rest without fear, buy stuff, set up your own little shack with whatever valuables you find outside the walls. You can also get missions, but I?ll explain that later.

Ontop of the compound, there are also 'safe houses,' where players can log off or rest up their character, however unlike the compound, safe houses are at risk. There is a chance of safe house your character is in being overrun but the hoards. Players and NPC's can protect these outposts, and if your offline when the safe house your in is overrun... well, sorry bucko. You?re starting again at a bunker, though you can still collect previous characters stashes as they are available from the will.

Players can also set up safe houses if they want, just go to a building, work about fortifying it, making barricades, setting traps etc.

From the safe zones, characters can accept missions of going into the hot-zone, where the infection is rampant. Missions can be easy, they also can be hard, the can require just one player or many in a raiding party.

As for the zombies, I suggest three different types:
-Old Dawn of the Dead style undead shamblers, lumbering slowly and comically across the land. Their strength is in numbers, and the fact that they cannot die unless you remove the head or destroy the brain.
-Your 28 Days style runners, these ones mostly come at right? mostly. Their infected, but not dead yet. Easy to kill, though if you don?t blow their heads off, they will rise again as shambelers.
-Boss Zombies. These guys are tougher than the Shamblers and Runners, and are usually at an objective.

Zombies either travel alone, in small groups, or in large hoards. Lone zombies are random, groups are also random, but the hoards are another matter, they rove across the land, and their movements are tracked.

I like some of the ideas that rougeknife presented but I have always been against the whole "different class" of zombie. All zombies should be former humans and such not possess much greater speed than other, unless you have a kenyan olypic athelete zombie vs Willford Brimley (sp?) zombie hehe. But I do like the idea of setting up safe hosues that can possibly be overrun. I dont like the idea of impregnible fortresses what would be like the "cities" of other MMOs, everything in this game would be player run and created. Now if a group of players got together and fortified a football stadium or something then hell yeah I would love to see that. Or maybe turn an oil tanker into a floating city (loved it in Water world).

But as I said it was just some ideas coming out of my head. If I had really spent more time on it, I would have adressed alot of major problems and ways to correct them but I just wanted everyone to get a feel for my vision.

And hell in 20 years, look for it, I plan on pitching ideas to alot of my friends who are becoming game designers.

I love the whole idea besides dying while you are logged off. i can see that becoming an issue that would cause people to quit the game.

This is the game I've been dreaming about playing my entire life.... Seriously, I've been saying something like this should be made for a few years, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks this...

God, why hasn't this been made yet?

Won't happen. Same thing happened in World War Z. Some bigshot would hole up with lots of celebrities and broadcast this on TV. They were attacked alright. By humans, not zombies.
