@Mister Mumbler brought up DJ Shadow in another thread, and for those who don’t know, Endtroducing….. is a brilliant album. It was made with minimal equipment, almost entirely consisting of samples from Vinyl records, and has since gone on to be one of the most iconic albums of electronic music from the ‘90s. I see the album cover, and I’m 18 again. This track never ceases to amaze me, like, if it comes on, you’ve gotta give a minute; shut up until it’s over. I can’t recall the number of times I went for walks in the snow with my Discman and headphones with this track playing and I just felt removed from the world, watching it from a distance.

I kind of like it, but I wonder if the composer really understands the concept of timing or beat.

It’s one of very few tracks I’ve played for the uninitiated that caught their ears enough for them to ask questions like “who/what is this?” Yes, there’s a world of music out there that isn’t on the radio. A particular favorite was my my ex's friend, a weed man, riding in my back seat a decade ago, after the relatively gentle intro: "That shit is fucking goin' hard!"

Yeah that kind of reminds me of the story behind Beastie Boy's album Paul's Boutique. It was composed with the guys who were the Dust Brothers, and I recall someone saying that the album literally could not be made today, due to the various copyright laws for music for sampling, that just didn't exist yet.

A lot of hip hop from the 90's in like that. It was a sampling free for all until tighter laws came in after 2000. Guys like them and The Bomb Squad pretty much just took what they wanted and turned it into a beat. A sampling masterpiece though, they worked on Beck's more hip hop inspired albums too.
