I love watching the Olympics and seeing certain countries who are excellent at one sport for no apparent reason. Like 85% of Turkey's medals at the Olympics have come from wrestling, they're the best in the world at it. I'm Australian and I'm always reminded at the Olympic and Commonwealth games that we're really, really, really good at field hokey for some reason. Like, it's no where near a 'national sport' but we're absolutely dominant at it, I have no idea why. I'm glad I looked into our local scene as well cos it turns out we have a league team called Perth Thundersticks, which is just amazing.

Whew lad, this is spicy. I think he's above that level of team but if the moneys right that's still a Ferrari engine he gets to drive on. All rumours at the moment though.

Jesus, I fucking hope not! He's good enough to be a number one driver somewhere above AR! Other rumors have suggested a swap with Russell at Williams, and I simply won't let that happen. Only upside here, it would be cool to have two ice-cold Finns at AR with Valtteri and Kimi (assuming Giovanazzi is the one losing his seat...)

With Team USA falling to France today I wanted to share this great video on a big reason for their struggle:

Y'know, I don't like basketball BECAUSE it is such a "me" league. I'm happy the US is being humbled by "team" mentalities. It's apropos beyond even the spirit of the Olympics. Basketball is probably the only Olympic competition this year I'm rooting against my country; if that puts me on some federal watch list, that's fine; they'll likely find my pornographic interests milquetoast enough to stop watching me after a day or two.

What I've seen from the video is USA Basketball..needs! to! get!

What they need is to get their heads out of their own asses. Stop expecting to be a "great player on a team" and start accepting being "player on a great team."

I don't care much for sports, but watching Snoop Dogg and Kevin Hart commentate on the Olympics is pure gold.

Really loving the energy of the Olympics where athletes are taking less and less of the organizers' shit. Such as Simone Biles' decision to not participate for health reason. I mean c'mon, she's won enough hasn't she?!

And of course, there are those who scoff at athletes for being "soft" and not risking career ending injuries every moment of their lives. Even Novak Djokovic joined in, who sadly unlike most of these critics, is not a Cheeto crunching deadbeat living on a couch but an actual Olympic athlete. Spicy meme below.

I know its a little bit apples to oranges, but I found this really funny.

That is fucking hilarious. I watched his singles match with Zverev (Germany) and saw his complete and total breakdown. I mean, it was like his confidence manifested itself as a full person, smacked him in the face, walked out of the stadium and caught a cab to the airport.

Thank you for sharing this.

Fucking Formula 1...

After three fantastic practices and qualifying second, rain fucked everything up for Bottas. Tyres spun on his start, he got pinched by Verstappen and Norris, then his tryes locked up going into turn 1, the first 600 meters, and he rear-ended Norris taking himself, Norris and about 4 other drivers out of the race. Ironically, he took out BOTH Red Bulls, one permanently; one has to wonder if it wasn't a team order...

1627916811885.png

BUT, it ended up being one of the better races of the season. After that wreck, the whole field was mixed up in a way no one would have imagined. Ocon ended up winning his first ever Grand Prix, and I was happy for him. Vettel came second, but was disqualified over some issue with his fuel, I dunno what that was about, but gutted for him. BOTH Williams finished in the points for the first points of the season; had I not seen it myself and saw that fact later, I wouldn't believe it.

Oh, and Kimi got a 10 second penalty; I'm sure feels nothing about that.

EDIT: I think Bottas is done at Mercedes. Not fair at all seeing as he's been nothing but a good teammate and a great driver, but loyalties are fickle in F1; if they think they can get even a bit better promoting George Russell from Williams, especially given Verstappen/Red Bull are a real threat, they'll probably do it after this last race. Hamilton got a new two-year contract with no word on Bottas save for "decisions to be made" during this three-week summer break. Doesn't matter; where Bottas goes, I'll follow. Just glad I didn't pull the trigger on buying the Mercedes #77 hat I wanted. Now, I'll wait to see if the Alpha Romeo #77 suits me better. (Christian/Jewish/Hindu/Muslim God, please don't let Bottas fall to Williams.)

My theory is that someone forgot her Adderall (or similar) back in the States and it's not available in Tokyo.

I like that this thread started because Kirk Cousins said something stupid and now this.

Three of our QBs are in quarantine and The Vikings have the lowest percentage of vaccinated players in the league...
Jesus... sorry, dude. I wonder if that vaccination stat is due to Kirk's influence, like, as a leader of the team, are other players listening to him and downplaying the seriousness of the vaccine and protocols?

It sucks but whatcha gonna do?

Besides join the "Go Fuck Yourself Cousins" parade once this starts costing us games (and the season) of course :D

Hopefully it doesn't come to that but we're running into problems in the first damn week. I can't imagine we're going to get through everything unscathed if it stays this way and unlike last year, everybody should be able to get the vaccine so The NFL isn't going to play with Kids Gloves when it comes to games this go around...

Well, Carl Lewis is not happy about the relay race.

That upsets me greatly.

These Olympics have been exceptional for a number of reasons; holding athletes/coaches to a pre-COVID expectation feels a bit... harsh?

Not excusing poor performance/training, but speaking out so vitriolically against people who've experienced the most exceptional Olympic conditions since forever, particularly in an age where mental health is a hot topic, feels unnecessary and crude. Not saying he's wrong; if Lewis, all the way over here in the States, saw mechanical failures and thinks people all the way over in Japan should have done better, there was a better way to go about expressing his disappointment than calling their efforts a "clown show."

I have a soft spot for the Olympics. I see athletes achieving their dream just to participate, and I'd like to imagine they're each giving their all, but at the end of the day, someone's got to win, but even more, nay, MOST will lose. And I think of these athletes away from home, family and friends who more than likely wanted nothing more than to be there to support. I think of the year-long delay during which they likely weren't planning on extending their training regimen. And I think of just the pressure, the international stage, they find themselves on... jeez, we'll NEVER know what they're going through.

As I've stated I'm a huge fan of Formula 1, and for quick passersby who think starting 15th versus 1st on the grid is "clearly" a 14-position gap of failure... do you know how big the gap is between two cars going nearly 200mph? Tenths of seconds. HUNDREDTHS of seconds. Despite the differences in standings being whole numbers, the differences in talent are often FRACTIONS.

Jerry Seinfeld did a bit that has always stuck with me and explains my sentiments perfectly:

So I will never hold an OLYMPIAN to an unreasonable standard of excellence. If they tried and failed, guess what? They still succeeded where countless hundreds and thousands failed. Work harder, get better, get 'em next time, but I will NEVER say they're not good enough and I certainly won't call their efforts "a clown show."
