For an early use:

nunc Celtiber es: Celtiberia in terra,
quod quisque minxit, hoc sibi solet mane
dentem atque russam defricare gingivam,
ut quo iste vester expolitior dens est,
hoc te amplius bibisse praedicet loti.

This roughly translates as

"Now you are a Celtiberian: in the land of the Celtiberians
they piss in the morning
and brush their teeth and pink gums with it,
so that the more polished their teeth,
the more it shows they have drunk their piss."

The Celtiberians, incidentally, were the main pre-Roman inhabitants of Spain and Portugal.
How far we've come since those years have passed!

If the Covid vaccine is so great how come I'm not shitting gold yet? Seriously, I had my second jab last sunday and it's still just regular poop. Freaking woke news corp. lied to me.

...

Note: I'm not being serious ;) considering this is pretty much how Qanon became a thing, and I wouldn't want to be responsible for someting like that.

I think governments need to try reverse psychology at this point. Have the least likeable leaders go on television and social media and FORBID people from getting the vaccine. Watch these anti-vaxxers and COVID-deniers shit their pants running to the nearest vaccination site just to defy governmental control and oversight.

I think humanity has peaked. We've gotten as smart as natural selection allows, now it's time for the downtick. The apes are watching from the trees telling their offspring how we're an example of what happens when you don't eat your vegetables for 7 million years.

Considering how reactionary a lot of people are. This would probably work. Either say they can't or that they will be shipping most vaccines overseas so there aren't many left.

Just treat people like adults who can make their own decisions. Anything you do in any direction that restricts people's freedoms, even if only in their own mind, is going to create a backlash against you. Not necessarily the thing you're mandating or forbidding, but you.

HA. What is happening now just proves that you can't treat people like adults who can make their own decisions. People are more then willing to accept some really stupid things and then fight tooth and nail against anyone who proves them wrong. "Make their own decisions" what a crock of shit when we have people who are rabidly anti mask or social distancing.

Considering we're over 50% vaccinated [in the US,] most of the holdouts probably fall into the category of "tHeY CaN'T teLL ME wHat tO DO!", so yeah, it might work, telling them to do the opposite of what they NEED to do.

And when COVID finally dies out (or minimalizes,) all of us with any common sense can look at those assholes and say...

For everyone who claimed this was just a flu: please name me one common flu season that lasted well over a year. Because last I heard, a seasonal "flu" has never killed people for a year-round period, and we're coming up on what? Nigh two years? Go get fucking vaccinated.

It's actually because of this I think we're too late to stop covid from becoming endemic, just like influenza. We're probably gonna have to mask up every winter from now on.

I remember vividly, when some red states removed social distance mandates ahead of other places, people freaked out that it was the end of the world. Then for the next few months, it wasn't the end of the world. When someone pointed this out here, another user claimed it's because people were still choosing to wear masks and social distance without the mandate, not understanding that's sort of the point.

People would have worn masks and social distanced without mandating it. More people would be vaccinated if it wasn't being forced down their throats. Limiting capacity inside buildings and cancelling large gatherings was probably a net win, and basically all the other laws have accomplished nothing but pissing people off. Not because masks or vaccines or distancing are bad, but because trying to take away people's personal decisions makes them less likely to agree with yours.

So, I should be able to walk around in public with a ticking time bomb because it's what *I* want to do, and I should be left alone to my choices even when they endanger everyone around me because no one wants to see me bellyache over minor inconveniences placed upon me by those more educated than me by orders of magnitude? Great. I'd like your address; I've got a lot I'd like to "feel free" to do on your front lawn.

Do you think "educated" people just telling everyone what to do is effective public policy?

Edit: "It's not the fault of educated political leaders that their policies are backfiring, it's the ignorant people for not giving away their personal agency who are the problem!"

Obviously there's an art and science to proper communication of expertise, but yeah, I generally want policy to be informed by people whose job is to know that shit.

That's not the question though. The question is the art and science to proper communication. Educated professionals are irrelevant in public policy if the methods of implementing their ideas are crap. I put the scare quotes on "educated" just because the individuals running a technocracy aren't necessarily as well-informed as they're deemed to be, but that's not what I'm trying to argue about.

Put it this way, politics aside (I am very apolitical, I didn't say "politicians,") I trust educated people from the CENTER OF DISEASE CONTROL and myriad other medically-focused organizations which thus far have not conflicted in their messaging far more than random yahoos on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and random gaming forums who think they know better simply because they think they know better and "muh freedumbs!"

I know people whom COVID has killed, and if the people whose central job it is is to control the diseases that kill people give me guidance, let's just say I'm going to err on their side of caution. What people like YOU think only sways my opinion closer to how SOON people should get vaccinated because there are a lot of "experts" running around these streets who don't know shit endangering us all.

Its cute that you think that and people might have gone ahead and done that, if some dumb fucks hadn't made masks and social distancing and the vaccine part of the idiotic culture war bull shit they love to peddle. Cause remember, as long as no one knows what is correct then everything is possible.

Then I guess the question to you is: what's the best way to tell 7 billion people "what to do" outside of this is an extremely deadly virus (prove it) and we need everyone to take precaution... in fact, everyone stay home; we're shutting down the planet (assholes, what about MY life???) Ok, wear masks (I don't like it and you're not the boss of me) and stay distanced from each other (*Karen coughing on a Starbucks employee because COVID is overblown.*) *Several million deaths later* Ok, there's a vaccine now; everyone go get it! (Nope, I've already established you're not the boss of me and COVID isn't that serious because the people in the Facebook group "COVID Is A Lie" reassured me so!)

"People" are idiots, and pandering to their collective level of understanding and willingness to comply only prolongs the effort to recovery and normalcy. I'd like to know how you feel urgent messages from leaders around the world to wear masks and get vaccines *should* have been better communicated. Because if I'm in a plane that's going down, the last thing I need is a flight attendant offering me a warm towel and "suggesting" I assume the crash position.

I also trust the people from the Center of Disease Control. Are you aware, the CDC recommended against business closures outside of the direst of circumstances? Do you know that before this pandemic, before it was made political, the general guidance on masks was that good masks were of benefit when working with those at high risk of respiratory illness, basic cloth masks could be good for protecting people from yourself if you have symptoms such as coughing or sneezing, but otherwise masks are recommended for everyday use? Like, I like that you say "politics aside", I agree politics only messes with these things, but you need to actively push the politics aside to see the truth. Politics doesn't care if you're apolitical personally, politicians are going to put themselves into the messaging, and all the organizations that directly made the rules state-by-state were all trying to know better than the CDC. Like the teachers' unions were pushing for school closures while the pediatric society said it was worse for the children's health to stay at home.

It is not one political group that has disregarded the experts. Nobody listened to the CDC.
Its cute that you think that and people might have gone ahead and done that, if some dumb fucks hadn't made masks and social distancing and the vaccine part of the idiotic culture war bull shit they love to peddle. Cause remember, as long as no one knows what is correct then everything is possible.
Ok, but it was as much or more the Democrats that did that. Democrats made masks and social distancing and vaccines part of the idiotic culture was bull shit they love to peddle. Remember, when Trump closed the border to China, they called it racist and told people to go visit Chinatown. When Trump was pushing the vaccine, the media called him a liar for saying it would be ready in the fall, and the current vice president said she wouldn't get it if it was. They flipped on all these things, but the current state isn't much better, where Democrats have been vaccinated but don't want to stop masking because they've made wearing masks into a political symbol. Lots of Republicans don't want to wear masks because Democrats deliberately made it a sign of partisan support for them.

The messaging in early spring of 2020 was pretty close to spot on. Once upon a time, social distancing was a recommendation, and just about everyone did it. Masks were a suggestion, and people were getting them (so aggressively that Fauci worried about hospitals running out). Democrats and Republicans were talking about how they were working together against a pandemic, and how pleased they were with state and federal cooperation. That was great. My state, as an example, set standards basically in line with CDC recommendations. Then, all of a sudden, Democrats decided that a pandemic was their opportunity to get Trump. The CDC standards were replaced with arbitrary business closures and strict mandates. Whatever the federal government was saying or doing, Democrats in state governments made a point of declaring it irresponsible and insufficient, and decided to take drastic measures into their own hands, which immediately backfired.

Like, if something is important, you stress the importance. You work with others to stress the importance. The moment you try and take away people's freedoms, they will fight you. And if you make it a partisan pissing contest, you've given up entirely.

Really up on those 'best of crazy conservative talking points' huh. Ok, well, lets see here.

While closing travel with china wasn't a bad idea, he did it in almost the most racist way he could and we did see a big jump in asian hate crimes and business being vandalized and having to close because of idiot customers boycotting them for the 'china virus' that trump loved to call it. Not to mention that it didn't really matter since the strain we ended up initially getting was from Europe and he didn't ban travel from there till it was much too late. This isn't even mentioning the fact he wasted any time gained and didn't go all in on PPE production and the states ended up having to fight each other for masks etc.

He pushed bull shit like saying it wasn't any big deal or that hydroxychloroquine was a cure all for it. So if trump was touting it then there was good reason to be skeptical, but once we had the vaccine you tended to see much higher rates in democratic areas getting it then republican areas. Also, the whole mask thing you are saying here, that is a LIE. You are just lying to us. You aren't even wrong, your are just a liar. You don't have to look far to see any of the republican pundits like tucker 'worst person in the world' carson telling people to call the cops if they see someone whos kids are wearing masks, or idiot religious people saying that masks are immoral since they cover gods gift of a face, or those selfish dumb fucks who just refuse to mask the fuck up cause someone told them they should and they are incapable of acting like they are older then 5 years old.
