It's no secret that I'm very left wing and I have never seen Vaush say or do anything that makes me think his content is worth engaging with.
Saudi Arabia is (incredibly enough) a significant step up on the pre-2001 Taliban, so even if 2021 onwards Afghanistan is a poor Saudi Arabia, it's some progress.
I'm not surprised. I think a lot of Westerners don't get that perhaps other places don't really view their country the same way, lack that same concept of loyalty to the nation. Their bonds are instead family, clan, etc. A national army therefore means little to them. They'll defend their village, clan, whatever, because that what means something to them. The national army is just a means to get paid. Once they're required to some actual fighting, it's time to drop that M16, go home and find another job.
Also, I've heard that they weren't even being paid for awhile. The corrupt puppet regime had little sense of self-preservation. And why should it have, if you can just take the money and run?

During most of the cold war those European countries did invest a lot into their defense, typically going beyond 2%. Afterward they stopped because they didn't feel threatened anymore. But at the same time they did not particularly feel like they needed US protection. From Whom ?
Terrorist are a lot like Natural Disasters. Nobody thinks they need disaster insurance until a disaster happens, then all of a sudden insurance sales go through the roof.

We've seen the results of fighting terrorism with a full scale military this week.
I'm not advocating for fighting directly, but certainly setting up protection measures is agreeable. Something on your turf and your embassies.
Invasion is rarely called for or beneficial for either side in the end.
Terrorism is for the police and maybe for the ntelligence angencies, not for the army, at least not in a way that should influence military spending.
You can be certain that no European felt or feels like they need the US army to pretect them from terrorists.
