I still consider Doom the better game overall, but consider Marathon for instance. Heavily inspired by Doom, released just one year later, but it had, among other things:
-Much, MUCH better story (of course, with Doom, that's a low bar), though you can weirdly enough draw parallels between them (moon of Mars, teleportation, lone soldier format, etc.)
-Innovations with gunplay, such as the ability to dual-wield, plus a reload system
-Oxygen and shield metres, in addition to just health
-Also, if we're talking about influence, obviously Doom's had far more influence, but if not for Marathon, we wouldn't have Halo
So, serious question - I'm curious as to how many people have played the games on the list. Because out of the 64 listed, I've played the following:
