It had been a long, long time since I had seen the
Nadesico movie, and I had rewatched the series proper a couple of years ago. Been thinking of doing a rewatch of the movie ever since. I'd only seen it once, and I remembered not particularly liking it, but hey that was a long time ago, and today I'm happily watching stuff I'd never have considered before. So, why not give it a go?
Welp. That was a mistake. The movie is, in fact, just that bad. The storytelling is disjointed, the pacing is all over the place but mostly rush, rush, rush, the action scenes are subpar even considering its age, and unless I missed it, Ruri never even uttered her favorite word. 2/5 I'm going to have to remember
not to watch this again.
Also since people are talking about Jojo: I recently binged Part 6/Stone Ocean. This was my first Jojo experience. I can see why it's so memeable. As a shonen battle anime, I guess it's a cut above the rest because it dispenses with some of the dumber aspects of the genre, while also scoring points for a high quality aesthetic and style. You won't see Jojo languishing episode after episode on a boring ass training arc (BNHA I'm lookin at
you) which does nothing to move the plot along. In the end though, it's still a shonen battle anime, which if you're not a fan, it probably won't make you one.
And now I'd like to talk to you about
Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior Mushoku Tensei. Yeah. Mushoku. Tensei.
Jesus christ that was a bad time to make that joke.
Season 2 wrapped up a while back and boy, those last few episodes. This is one helluva show. I've concluded its the best show I've watched all year, mostly based on the fact that it has engaged me like no other. Long after I've forgotten things like Vivy, Komi-san, 86, or even Zombie Land Saga Revenge, I will remember Mushoku Tensei. It is very well written, particularly (IMO) the growth and development of Eris is nothing short of amazing, action is used rather sparingly but when it indulges, it is damn good, and the world building is excellent. I'd compare it to Re0, but Mushoku is a lot more down to earth and it certainly doesn't have the protag being horrifically killed every other episode (although, some might say that's a flaw).
If you're unfamiliar, it's an isekai--wait, wait, let me finish! I see you trying to leave!--wherein the protag in his former life is exceptionally pathetic (to put it...very mildly) and being given a second chance, vows (and struggles) to live his second life as a better person. Aside from retaining his life experience, and a strong affinity for magic (which he still has to learn to use), he's not given game-breaking OP skillz, is not the smartest guy in the room though his old memories do give him an advantage at times but along with his previous life experience came his previous psychiatric issues as well--you'll see. The first season follows his childhood up to around age 10 or 12 and sets up some long-term payoffs in season 2. It's an extremely solid show.
