You mean like now in Ukraine? With Russia wanting to spread its influence and take over and the west funding the resistance?Remember the good old days of the Cold War when proxy wars were in vogue and loads of civilians got killed for no reason? Preferable to the big one, just better hope it's those civilians over there.
Yep, and that's why NATO is not really responding, everyone knows another/continuation of the Cold War is better than a (big) hot one. Well, that and countries like Britain whose leaders are in bed with Russian oligarchs, and who are incidentally condemning Russia for locking up protestors while making it legal for them to do the same. You mean like now in Ukraine? Oh I agree that a cold war is better than a hot one, but no need to remember when it's already here.Yep, and that's why NATO is not really responding, everyone knows another/continuation of the Cold War is better than a (big) hot one. Are you suggesting that the working classes of the whole world should unite and overthrow the warmongers on both sides?Oh I agree that a cold war is better than a hot one, but no need to remember when it's already here.
The question remains, are we willing to tolerate yet another cold war? Knowing that our cold war is someone else's hot war?
Yes. Absolutely. There are a number of hot wars going on at the moment that most people not involved don't care about. Even at the height of Western involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan the West tolerated it. People were unhappy, not enough to end the wars. There's massive (and in recent years, unprecedented) levels of government corruption in a number of Western nations and people will learn to live with it.The question remains, are we willing to tolerate yet another cold war? Erm:In the American Afghanistan war 2,401 US soldiers died, that was a 20 year war. In thr Iraq war 4,431 US soldiers died, that was 7 years. In the Ukraine-Russian war, ~4,000 to ~6,000 Russian soldiers have died in a week.
If this continues on this may be the bloodiest war in human history since World War II.
The Russian Working Class is welcome to overthrow Putin. Are you suggesting that the working classes of the whole world should unite and overthrow the warmongers on both sides?
ops, I met European war. It is still nothing compared to the horrors of of those wars.Erm:

(Also, add that to my post about us tolerating someone else's hot war above)
Yes, it is certainly best for us not to get involved and let Russia slaughter Ukrainians to eventually install a puppet regime and do purges.Unfortunately, its probably best that NATO doesn't get directly involved here.
If this war continues to go badly, that might actually happen. The Russian Working Class is welcome to overthrow Putin.
Well I like to be proven wrong about this. Hopefully this war will be over soon.@Godzillarich(aka tf2godz)
I don't think it has reached the level of the mess of collapsing Yugoslavia yet and it has still quite a way to get there. Mostly because despite Russian noises no one is involved in ethnic cleansing
Ah. That's probably not happening. The Russian Working Class is welcome to overthrow Putin.
That sounds all well and good, but then you think of the examples of Germany, Italy, and Japan and the United States and it doesn't seem to match. The fascists actually had to be punched in the face and soundly defeated, they didn't just fuck off because they didn't deliver. That's the other problem with fascism. It's all very well to use the threat of external enemies to justify internal repression and excessive militarization, but you have to win. If you can't win, if the results don't match the rhetoric, people start to wonder why they're being asked to make all these sacrifices in the name of national supremacy when national supremacy doesn't seem to be happening.
The other option is we find out what happens when two nuclear powers fight. As I said, Putin seems like the kinda guy who is totally willing to throw nukes around, that might just be an act, but, certainly seems like a distinct possibility. We did put down really crippling sanctions on Russia, even if, and most likely do take Ukraine, their economy will be pretty fucked. Maybe we will get lucky and the sanctions will get the Russian population to turn on Putin and they string him up, its not likely, but possible.Yes, it is certainly best for us not to get involved and let Russia slaughter Ukrainians to eventually install a puppet regime and do purges.
It however doesn't feel good or right.
Has such a plan ever worked even once?Maybe we will get lucky and the sanctions will get the Russian population to turn on Putin and they string him up, its not likely, but possible.
It certainly can help. Generally it won't remove a despot, but it does force them to be more democratic and chill the fuck down.Has such a plan ever worked even once?
