So, seems like Russia finally threatened to cut off Western Europe from gas.

And ... no one seems to care. So much for the feared gas based influence on other countries.

You know, when Russia can't even abide by its own ceasefires, how can you seriously expect that they'll abide by any agreements they make with another country?

Why do you guys know so much about tanks?
Is it a weird fetish, or is this something any responsible informed citizen should have basic knowledge of?
Military history/tech is a hobby like any other.

Some people get super into sports, some go on about race cars, and some people talk details about tanks. It's as simple as that.

I think the UK might care because for some reason I'm of the impression that we're more reliant on gas for heating than a lot of Europe is, combined with inexplicably having much less storage capacity. I'm stockpiling solid fuel in prep for next winter (appreciating that I'm lucky to be able to do so).

Played a lot of World of Tanks, followed The Chieftain's YouTube account. Fun times watching a tall, lanky Irish Texan try and fit into 80 year old tanks

The simple fact is, whatever damage the loss of Russian gas supplies would do to the economies of Western Europe is insignificant next to the degree to which it would cripple the Russian economy, and thus noone takes such threats seriously.

You'd think they'd have started earlier.
Part of me thinks that this move is very much connected to the Russian economy's focus on oil exports.

Russia is already being outcompeted on the economic world stage by much smaller countries. It already faced a slide into economic obscurity. An ordinately huge proportion of its remaining GDP is in oil... and now there's a concerted worldwide effort to wean our energy needs off fossil fuel. Which would render Russia even more economically impotent, as its primary remaining export falls through the floor.

So the government faces a mad dash to retain some form of global influence. The smart thing to do would be to invest and diversify. But that's costly, and most of the governing party's bankrollers are oil barons, so its off the table.

The military is one of the fee things that Russia still has that's globally competitive. But it doesn't translate directly into influence or money... unless they literally just take those things by force.

It looks like a gambit to attempt to hold onto Russia's geopolitical influence long-term, at the cost of what they hope is short-term approbrium. The US/Western Europe has been good at forgetting stuff they care about after a few years.
