Recent anime output has me on my "why the fuck are these characters in high school" soapbox.

My Dress Up Darling is the latest "yes it's really horny but it's also a sweet character anime I swear" anime weebs are raving about and just...they're 15. Not that them being in high school is particularly relevant to the plot, seeing as how they don't have a problem securing r18 materials, having plentiful free time, and, the bit that inspired this rant, renting a room in a love hotel for a photo shoot. At some point a reasonable business proprietor is gonna check an ID, right?

But if they were first year college students or just graduated high school? Absolutely zero objections to things like content, plot points, abnormal amounts of free time, how society currently functions, etc, etc, etc

Like, in shows about high school and they have a party with alcohol, they're stealing alcohol or otherwise getting alcohol illicitly; they aren't like, just going to the liquor store. Change that one tiny thing and everything about the story flows much smoother

I am having a similar old man yells at clouds moments but mine was directed at Euphoria this show I started watching on HBO Max.

Like these high school students have way to too much time and access to shit and are way too cool not goofy enough.

Have not watched My Dress Up Darling yet it looks cute though and we have to come to the conclusion that after high school everyone in Japan just dies.

But if you are tired of that there is this anime on Netflix called Kotaro lives Alone. The premise is a 4 year old living in their own apartment which is silly but the supporting cast are late 20s and up in fact the secondary character is a 31 year old wannabe manga artist and slacker.

Don't know how much it means but I certainly give my seal of approval for its quality and BrawlMan also likes it last I checked. Something I like is that it's willing to take its time with its scenes. It also has some surprisingly detailed and good quality animations.

Uh..outside of that one clip I posted a while back, I have not seen the show yet. But if you love it, that is all that matters. @TheMysteriousGX, doe not like it? Oh well. I understand and respect his decision.

100%. Which is why I yearn for horny shows that don't star children.

Mostly though, the "everything happens in high school" bit is infesting weeb culture to the point that shows staring adults in college drinking openly get erroneously labeled as being in high school, because zero other settings exist apparently

(This description is lies)

Set My Dress Up Darling at an art college without changing anything else and every part of the show makes more sense.

They would have no time at all for such shenanigans.
I had more free time my first semester of college than at any time during high school

I don't think you understand the differences between American college and Japanese college.

Isn't the new Harry Potter game about a goblin uprising? Aka, an uprising that would have been framed as a fight for freedom against oppression in literally any other setting?

I don't think you understand the differences between American college and Japanese college.
This has already been discussed in these forums, although I can't remember which thread. I understand the desire to not set your (when I say you I am referring to the author) anime in a period of your life that you have either not experienced or didn't have a good experience with, but I don't think it's a very valid excuse for inserting your horny fantasies into a high school setting. In the case of My Dress-up Darling, I really don't think being in high school is relevant to the plot, at least from what episodes I've watched. I'm pretty sure cosplay in Japan is a largely adult hobby, so it's just confusing as to why the author decided to set it in high school.

Since it was brought up, even in Kotaro Lives Alone, a show about a 4 year old, the author for some reason slipped in of the classic horny tropes. Which really has me wondering, just how deprived are these people of intimacy that they would project that kind of shit onto a otherwise wholesome slice of life story.

I'm not against lewd shit either (do people even use "lewd" outside of a anime/manga context?), I would just prefer to not have to wonder about the age of the girl bouncing her boobies at me. I think it was actually interesting how My Dress-up Darling handled the character's attraction to each other. Implying that Gojo jacked off after Marin sent him a bikini pic is not only funny, but pretty realistic. It doesn't shame him for doing so. The same thing with Marin enjoying hardcore hentai games despite being a popular girl at school. But when the show has extended scenes of closeups on a 15 year old girl's ass and tiddies, it pulls me out of the fun. I think the manga/anime would have been perfect if they took some notes from Wotakoi. Gojo could be a grown ass man still trying to perfect his craft and Marin a successful salarywoman who wants to get into a hobby.

I know some aren't happy about how cameo-centric media is becoming (such as myself), but I am quite happy that Andrew Garfield got a second chance. And most definitely Hayden Christensen deserves one too. Especially since there is literally no way he could do worse than his Anakin in the prequels.

EDIT: A friend also pointed it out to me that in a way, Robert Pattinson is the same. Everybody loves a redemption arc.

Honestly, none of them ever needed "redemption" in the first place. Even during The Amazing Spider-Man run, Andrew had plenty of defenders, or those that felt that he got unnecessary hate. The ones praising the loudest are either bandwagon jumpers, or those that cooled down after a while. Robert Pattison especially has no need for redemption. He admitted during Twilight's heyday, that he did not like acting in those movies, and that he and many of his co-stars, thought Steph Myers is creepy and insane.

Ya know the author of this manga is a woman right? Also maybe stop being a decrepit old man that's insecure about sex and telling people to stop having fun because of your feelings. The two primary characters are the same age, people that read the manga that are around the same age aren't going to see this as an issue and a lot of comments I see on the sexuality in the manga are about how it pertains to the two characters and things like, "Oh I remember when I was that age" rather than someone talking about jerking off to a 15 year old.

Would you like me to plum the depths of the internet and send ya the actual dark shit that you should be complaining about? Because trust me, it wouldn't be hard for me to find stuff that would make your skin crawl off your body. There is some very horrid shit out there that deserves far more criticism than a fucking rom/com about cosplay and teenage hormones.

The University system in Japan is I gather rather different to College in the United States. I don't disagree with your point either, but the simple fact is most of this horny shit is being sold to Japanese teenagers (and teenagers are nothing if not horny AF) and High School is apparantly the only part of their life where its feasible to engage in literally anything other than nose to the grind study or work or child rearing if you're most Japanese women.

Because I see we're winding up for same ol' argument, I'll again point out that what caused the comment from me was kids checking into a love hotel, something you normally get carded for. The horny isn't the problem, the age intersecting with the nominal Real World they inhabit fucks with the story in stupid ways.

And while Japanese colleges are different than American colleges, it's definitely not how you think. Getting *into* a college is testing hell. Once you're there though? Plenty of time for self-expression, growth, finding yourself, hobbies, etc. Solid case to be made that US colleges are harder than Japanese colleges once you get through the door. Which is a big part of why most of these shows *should* be set in college: Japanese high school is study and testing hell. The "you don't end up looking like a pedophile" reason is actually the second reason, not the first.

Plus, like: Genshiken exists, and should be required watching for weebs.

Half right: the nose to the grind studying starts in high school, and ends after graduation. To the point the high schools put out PSAs about how you shouldn't date. Getting into college or dropping out and being a part timer is when things loosen up for a bit

Yes. Every new fact presented about the Harry Potter world makes it so much worse.

In fantastic beasts 2, a wizard who can see the future tries to stop the Holocaust by orchestrating a wizard takeover of the muggle world, so naturally our heroes put a stop to that and let the Holocaust happen as scheduled

In the videogame, you get to put down the Goblin Rebellion against their oppressors.

I'm waiting for the visual novel where you set up wizard schools for centaurs and shuffled them off to reservations to destroy their culture and make them more civilized

Damn you YouTube! Lying to me again. Although I dare say free time in college is going to be relative to what's being studied. A student studying to be a car mechanic may have more free time relative to some poor bastard studying medicine or law. But yeah if Mangaka could start setting some of the horny harem series in university - where its merely an ethical breach (I think) for a teacher to fuck a student and not a legal one - that'd be fantastic.

I mean, you don't get a lot of Engineering Students On The Rampage media for a reason, I think. Though maybe mostly because nobody working in anime or manga wants to draw mechs anymore and folks making college movies in the US don't want to be nitpicked to death by the target audience for a Engineering Students On The Rampage movies. Real Genius was a good flick

Art school though?

The idea of pre-crime was stupid in Minority Report, and its stupid here. And perhaps instead of deciding to stop a violent subjugation and genocide with another violent subjugation they could have oh, I don't know, obtained all the possible viable intelligence about Germany's invasion of Poland and forewarned the rest of Western Europe so that they could be better prepared? You know, literally anything than the one thing that will inspire resistance - and in an era where firearm ownership in most Europe is actually pretty fuckin' common - and lots of dead Wizards who never learnt the spell 'thirty-ought six'.
