Yes, yes, you're very enlightened, we know.
So saying hitting somebody is bad is some enlightened response?

Coda. Kind of a big deal, at least to me, as I considered the fight for Best Picture to be between West Side Story and Dune.
I don't know any of the Oscar politics and what was being favored but to me, Dune either seems like it's on there because it was popular (the Academy likes putting a couple movies up that the general public has seen and liked but have no chance to win Best Picture like say Black Panther) or it was on there because it is good but it's not really finished so it's on there to recognize it for now and if 2nd or 3rd movie (some friends said it's gonna be 3 movies) sticks the landing, it'll get the Oscar like the 3rd Lord of the Rings movie did. I liked Dune a lot but it's kinda hard to say how good it is without seeing the rest.

Oh fuck, we're doing this too?

I came here to laugh at woke people. Not one asshole being hit by another arsehole over joke.

Rock took it like a adult and hasn't overreacted. So respect to that in this current moment

Edit: I hope Smith gets some mental health help. To me the joke was just the final straw and not the cause
A few woke people sided with Will Smith and deleted their tweets, there's that.

Don't Look Up being nominated for Best Picture was rather woke. It was an OK at best satire (only a couple really good lines) that was a half hour to hour too long. The movie doesn't even have a Fresh rating on Rottentomatoes, critics didn't even like it.

i dont even think it was the joke. Will laughed at the joke, it's on video. Then Jada leaned in and said some shit to him to get him to act a certain kind of way.

Whatever is going on with the Smith's is pretty fucking sad when you think about it. They've admited to Jada just fucks whomever she wants as their relationship is "open" or whatever. So twitter has been all over that for a long time, and now it's even worse because she basically made Will embarass himself in front of not just his peers but the whole fucking world.

You are probably right though. Something about that relationship is probably eating away at Will. Hell maybe even both of them, who knows. This was not the answer to anything though i think we've all seen that much.

They stood with her for a whole month until they decided to get Amouranth on in a bikini to boost ratings, no really.

Video may not be safe for viewing at work
Is it some kind of rule that men have to wear a sleazy lounge-lizard leisure suit while near a woman in a bikini indoors? Do they just spontaneously grow on them?

There is an obvious disconnect between lefty Eastern Europeans who don't want to be invaded, but throughout history have been the battlegrounds for empires in Europe. And the people who didn't grow up in Eastern Europe, but are on the left. On one hand, I don't know who to support, at first I did support Ukraine, but if they sign a peace deal to say no to NATO, and be neutral, that's fine, I don't want Ukraine to be the next Syria or Yemen over NATO. But Putin's refusing to stop, so Ukraine has the right to defend itself. At the same time the left that is from Asia, and Western Europe is being intellectually dishonest, I doubt if their country was invaded by Russia they wouldn't want NATO, the US, the UN, or some stronger entity to defend their country if their country can't be defended unless they are so deluded they think Putin wouldn't do bad shit to them if they were invaded. They should just admit they are realists who only want to protect themselves, and their nations over others and or that Ukraine is an inconvenient example for them on the US is all bad, and every other left-wing gov't or "anti-imperialist" country not allied with the US is a good ideology. At the same time let's be clear, everyone lots of people who are not lefty that want to defend Ukraine, but not punish Saudi Arabia over Yemen, or Assad over Syria because Ukrainians are either Christians or white. That's a shitty opinion to have, and I know Biden knows about the war in Yemen before he became President, he did a video on it with Buzzfeed on it, and has taken small actions against the Saudis like calling them out, and not sending them "offensive weapons". But I bet if China or North Korea does bad shit in Asia, there would be some leftists in Ukraine, and eastern Europe who don't care, and I am sure more would care due to shared experiences. That said I am still for choice and political freedom for those that wouldn't help me if the US got invaded.

Some of the left. Seanchaidh is not alone, but doesn't speak for the entirety of the left.

Why are we judging people for having an open relationship now? That doesn't have any relevance to the incident, its just prurient.

Well, I guessing here but I don't think Will is as for the open relationship

But that might be just the media focusing on Jada even if its the exact copy as Will. Which I would not put it past him

That's the story/picture.

But really all of this is just speculation about personal lives, about which we know very little actual reliable information. And the "culture" rags and sites have a long history of demonising/embellishing womens' (perceived) promiscuity.

===

Really there's quite a lot to unpack about this Oscars slap thing. Physical violence is bad (obviously). And it's a valid and true point to make that wealth and fame gave Smith the freedom to do something like that on stage, and expect no repercussions. That's all true.

But also, it was hardly that big an altercation. A relatively small slap. The pearl-clutching is out of proportion.

And what Chris Rock said was itself way out of line, and I'd say more harmful than what Smith did. It's normalised to take the piss out of disability on stage at a national event, is it? To see a room full of rich people laughing uproariously at a woman's disability, as she sits there visibly uncomfortable, was pretty grim.

Did Chris Rock know that though? Because I don't think it's common knowledge. I didn't know about it till now, as I figured this was just her look. It's not that uncommon among female celebs to sport the cropped look these days. And while I'm not too familiar with Rock as a comedian he never came across to me as particularly vicious, targeting others for their disabilities. I could be wrong, but he always seemed relatively tame, hence his hosting of the Oscars.

I mean, the joke itself shows Rock's age, as that whole 'G.I. Jane Demi Moore shaving her head' thing was barely a controversy in the 90's, but I can't say it was aimed particularly at women who are losing their hair. This felt like a comedian making fun of celebrity fashion more than anything. Not that Jada can't feel shit on by this, actually having a disability, but this really seems like just an honest misunderstanding.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised by the Rock not knowing this. I wouldn't be surprised if he did know. But also, if it comes out in a weeks time that this is all staged to drive up Oscar viewings, I would be equally not surprised.

Can I just, when can we get good jokes back? All these 'edgy against the Political Correctness' jokes are trash fires. Remember when comedians used to be funny?

Well speculation is all we have because Will's reaction make no rational sense. Comedians have been hosting the Oscar's and Golden Globes since the begining and part of the show is the host roasts the audience, for all sorts of reasons. It's tradition and everyone in Hollywood knows that shit by now.

For Will to react that way to a joke, which he laughed at first, naturally you are going to cause people to speculate what his problem is. And judging by the video's the probelm stems from Jada. And because they put their private lives out for the world to see and mock, then the internet did what the internet does.

And what Chris Rock said was itself way out of line, and I'd say more harmful than what Smith did. It's normalised to take the piss out of disability on stage at a national event, is it? Basically what Shinji said. Chris likely didn't know about it, and frankly it's even more likely that he didn't even write the joke in the first place. The Oscars have always been exceptionally heavily scripted and Chris was reading from a teleprompter, so I highly doubt he even wrote that joke, which let's be real wasn't even that bad of a joke. People make fun of diseases and disabilities all the time, from Christohper Reeve to Hawking, it's not that uncommon or out of place. Hell they televise full Roasts of people where nothing seems to be off limits.

These actors know damn well roasts at these award shows are coming. And if Jada felt some type of way about it, she could have brought it up to the academy afterwards. Instead she encouraged Will to go up and slap Chris? Would Will have gone up there if Dwayne Johnson was presenting that joke? I fucking doubt it.

And like I said, I am 90% sure the whole thing was planned as a shock event to get people talking about the Oscars. And it was just poorly thought out, because if it was real Will would have effectively taken a shit on the whole night. Every celebrity thereafter would feel awkward getting an award and thanking people after the guy in the front row literally slapped a dude on stage a few minutes ago and is now laughing and clapping and enjoying the night like nothing happened.

It comes across as so incredibly fake that I can't believe it was real.

It's not completely irrational to feel angry about someone mocking someone you love for their disability. People the world over would want to smack someone who did that.

And the Oscars are famous for "roasting" people... about their jobs, career moves, crappy films they've made etc. Mocking disability is not normal at the Oscars.

Literally all we see Jada do is look a bit stony-faced. As anyone would in her position.

It's honestly a bit ridiculous for one man to mock a disability, another man to smack him in the face, and for a woman to not do anything but look a bit upset... and she's the one who gets blamed!?

You literally have no good reason to claim she "encouraged him" to do it. This is pure speculation. We don't see her do or say a damn thing.

Mocking disability is not normal at the Oscars.
He mocked her hair style not her disability. Whomever wrote the joke probably didn't know about the disability. It was more a mockery about how shit G.I. Jane was more than it was a plug at Jada anyway. No matter how you slice it, it's a fairly innocent joke taken the wrong way.

It's honestly a bit ridiculous for one man to mock a disability, another man to smack him in the face, and for a woman to not do anything but look a bit upset... and she's the one who gets blamed!?
See above about the unknown disability factor. Second of all WILL LAUGHED at the joke. If someone was mocking your wife's disability why the fuck would he laugh? He is on tape laughing. Jada then leans in, says some shit, and Will gets slappy with it, BAM that's a brilliant pun.

You literally have no good reason to claim she "encouraged him" to do it. This is pure speculation. We don't see her do or say a damn thing.
We do see her lean towards Will with a bad look. Of course we don't hear what she says or anything, but it certainly changes his mood in a flash. So that's pretty compelling evidence.

Either way neither person handled the situation like adults, if it wasn't staged in the first place, both of them should have talked to the producers of the ceremony and/or Chris and talked it out like people. And you know what if they had done that I would bet that there would be articles like, "Chris Rock apologizes for insensitive joke towards Jada Smith at Oscars" and that would be the end of it.

But people likely wouldn't be talking about the Oscars if that was the case. Every bit of Oscar news is the slap heard round the world. Frankly if I was a first time Oscar winner, I would be pissed that the whole night is soured because the Smiths can't take a joke (tasteless or otherwise is irrelevant).

This didn't even feel like an edgey joke though. It was the typical toothless Oscar humor. I think that's what surprised people about this whole altercation, and why most people assumed this came from some issues Will Smith is having in his personal life.
