So here's a thing. I understand that there are problems inherent with self-driving cars- inability to deal with unexpected situations, moral quandaries (does it sacrifice the driver to save a bus full of nuns and orphans?), so on. But why do people keep saying "self-driving cars will kill thousands of people" without any acknowledgement that human-driven cars already do? Sometimes I suspect that the primary objection to self-driving cars is not knowing who to sue in case of an accident. Gotta know who you can get rich off of for that fender-bender!
I'm the biggest hypocrite in the world when it comes to self-driving cars. Because I SAY that kind of thing, often times on the radio as the host of the show I produce is very skeptical... and I always chime in with "call me when they kill as many as human drivers have." And I talk about the efficiency angle, and all the gains in energy savings and how much timing and scheduling could be better and more precise... and yet I consider myself a very good driver and wouldn't turn over MY driving to a self driving car. I'm the guy with the ego so overinflated I really would prefer EVERYONE ELSE was in self driving cars and I would continue to drive mine... that's the safest and best scenario.

I watched the video over on LTT about them trying to install Windows 10 on the SteamDeck. The experience - unsupported by Valve, by the way - was utter garbage in terms of driver support and usability. Yes, truly surprising that a niche device that had a specialist OS designed specifically for it to take the best advantage of its small form factor hardware, did not react well to a full desktop OS being installed. That's not what bothers me though, that sort of thing is LTT's bread and butter; they're a technology enthusiast channel so of course they're gonna do it.

What bothers me are the Linux supremacy sect within the overall Linux userbase, who see these issues and suddenly start acting like G1 Starscream to Windows' Megatron and declaring that they will now lead the Gaming Decepticons. Because this one edge-case where the decade's long developed OS is better for a niche device than Windows suddenly means every gamer will drop Windows and it will disappear from the IT landscape in a few years.

TL;DR, could the rest of the normal Linux userbase please take your vocal minority of shitheads behind the wool shed and beat them into submission.

The Linux elitist set is pretty funny- they at once want everyone to use Linux, and for Linux to still be difficult to use. I once made a comparison to people who think that manual transmissions on cars are automatically (ha!) superior and that everyone should have to use them- and someone came along to inform me that, yes, everyone should have to use manual transmissions.

That's actually pretty common, perhaps the most common roadblock (lol) to getting the public to adopt a future of driverless cars. Almost everyone is fine with AI driven cars, just only if other people adopt them instead. It's car NIMBYism! 😉

I had to spend $600 on car repairs recently because this city hates doing road repair. Hit a pothole full of rainwater and practically destroyed the suspension on that side.
An update, a majority of the roads I travel on towards work have finally done the actual repairs and filled them up now. It still should not have taken them this long though.

Here's a fun fact: the North Texas economy survives on road construction/repair. Wanna see thousands of pairs of eyes roll in unison? Watch a road construction crew in North Texas drop the first of dozens of orange cones/barrels demarcating a construction site; it's the only time North Texans unify in collective anger. They tend to do one, small section at a time as they spend weeks if not MONTHS progressing down a street causing traffic and delays for even the shortest of commutes. Then, when the reach the end of the road... it's back to the beginning to repair the repairs they started on initially. Fortunately, I've discovered nearly every alternate route to get anywhere I wanna go, but I don't put it past those bastards to try and paint me into a corner with multiple construction sites that block all of my more convenient avenues.

Add to all of this careless road crews digging gouges in the road with snow plows during the winter, and you've got New Jersey, Land of Perpetual Roadwork.

So amidst the speaking out movement in professional wrestling OTT made a huge deal about standing with the victims and not working with the perpetrators. After buying a ticket for their latest show they then announced that Jordan Devlin would be in the main event.

Oddly enough the only wrestler who faced allegations who actually got "cancelled" was the one who was making serious efforts to get wrestlers unionised. Now I'm not saying they shouldn't have severed ties with David Starr but it's weird that the only guy who threatened their bottom line was the one they decided to drop and people with more serious allegations were kept on.

I can never have Happy's Pizza again. Their boneless wings gave me indigestion and my Saturday pretty much got completely ruined from eating it yesterday. I'm a lot better compared to earlier today, but I've been lying down for basically the whole day after I left work.

People, specifically people who write news articles, using 'trendy' as a perjorative. We get it, you're above all of it, how about you fuck off and let the cool kids enjoy themselves grandad?

I can never use Fire Fox again, at least on my laptop. It kept causing my laptop to crash. I know there is a refresh option before you uninstall the web browser, but it's not worth the risk. So I am back to using Google Chrome again.

As I've mentioned before, my girlfriend has been "babysitting" her great aunt a couple days a week. The dementia and her being hard of hearing make for some awkward moments, but today, the cake has been taken. Her son who drops her off brought us 3 DVDs of her old home videos (we're talking from the '40s and '50s) that were digitized for preservation. Doctors said watching them might help ground her and sort her rapidly degrading memory. There's no audio, just black and white/faintly colored video of children splashing in lakes or scenery from road trips. It feels like I'm watching the video from The Ring. I wholly expect to be dead in 7 days, but if the girl who crawls out of the TV can spare me that particular horror, I'll agree to kill myself.

EDIT: There's silent footage of twin adolescent girls in white dresses. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

Firefox has fallen far from its heyday. I only keep it around for a GMail notifier I use, as well as NoScript.

Had to buy a new phone after my old one became a fire hazard. Man, I hate Apple but fuck me if Android isn't a Goddamn hassle as well sometimes. So much bloat I need to get rid of, and for every step forward my new phone has taken with features, it also takes a step back.

Also, Jesus, do phones really need to be so fucking huge these days???

EDIT: Anyone want to recommend a different launcher for me to use? The default one doesn't allow me to resize my widgets which is driving me CRAZY.

Tell me about it. I had to get a new phone a few weeks back. I thought I was upgrading from my Galaxy Note getting the S21, but it's functionally identical, less the S-Pen (which I never used, honestly,) AND it now lacks a headphone jack because apparently if you're not using Bluetooth everywhere, you're a caveman.

I like bigger phones. Yes, they're uncomfortable in your pocket, but as I text daily, I prefer the larger interface. Saves me from mistyping when my thumbs aren't three times the size of the keyboard. I tried using a friend's iPhone once to send an address to someone, and fuck me, every other letter or number was wrong because the keyboard was so damned small.

That being said, it's funny how old becomes new again. Cell phones started as behemoths; improving them meant making them smaller and smaller. Now, as we've apparently apexed, BIGGER phones are the way to go. Next thing you know, we'll being saving ourselves the hassle of carrying around our phones with conveniently wall-mounted phones that don't require charging and fidelity independent of a wi-fi connection!

I made this comment elsewhere in these forums, but if we look at the evolution of written language, it too has come full circle. We started with rudimentary pictures and symbols which evolved into complex written text which then evolved into shorthand and abbreviations which has since evolved into 90% of my texts being responded to with emojis, aka: rudimentary pictures and symbols.

Someone I know professionally (that is, through work, I'm not a professional knower); and he doesn't just say it, he says it a lot.
That's specific enough. My thugs have been dispatched to terminate ANY British professionals. Wear a red bow in your hair so they know not to terminate you.

The bow's gonna need some sticky tape if it's going to stay in my 'hair'.
