Hehe, talking about slow pace and not even in the Chimera Ant arc. Just wait, you'll feel the moment that they start panicking about running out of material. It's like hitting a brick wall.
Yeah, lost interest a few episodes into Chimera. Moved on. Maybe I'll get back to HxH and finish it someday. (Checks my videogame and anime backlog) Wow, the phrase "maybe I'll get back to it" is a real kiss of death apparently.

I could never get interested in HxH. I know it's from the same creator of Yu Yu Hakusho, but this anime/manga did nothing for me. I will give him credit for the character design, and not drawing nor writing black people as negative stereotypes (even then that part is not that unique anymore), but that's about it. The series always felt like another shounen show to me.

Watching GlitchTechs (Netflix). It's animated show about video games (no actual offical IPs) in its own setting that is good so far. I am on only on the first episode so far, but I am liking. This show is like a cross between Ghostbusters, MiB, and Tron. I am going to Season 2 as soon as I finish Season 1.

You didn't even get to the slow part. I swear, after a specific point about half way in the remainder of the arc takes place in slow motion.

It kind of is. I quite liked it on my first watch, but on my second I didn't feel that it held up as well. The world doesn't really make much sense, why is it necessary to kill so many people in the Hunter Exam? Why is there no moral requirement or self policing as part of the Hunter organization? How is Nen a secret when there is a massively popular televised combat arena featuring fighters using it? Why do so many gangsters throw their lives away trying to fight superhumans? It was obvious he was immune to bullets, but that never seemed to affect their confidence that they wouldn't die instantly. I can't ever really get into a show either where the characters are just naturally gifted. I like to see people become the best through determination and ceaseless effort, but the main characters are the best kind of because they were born that way. The Chimera Ants are even worse in that regard.

Also, the most interesting plotline, and the only one with any clear goal or emotional stakes (Kurapika's) was abandoned halfway through and never returned to.

And I already know the story arcs take forever to complete, so I hold no interest. This manga has been ongoing since the 90s, and it has all these hiatuses. No thank you.

I didn't gather it was necessary to kill people in the hunter exam, just that it was possible to kill that many. Moral requirement or self policing, I never gathered that was necessary. The organization (as much as it even is one) isn't based on or within any given governmental structure. Policing wouldn't be necessary, should a hunter violate the given law within a specific territory... all the government would have to do is hire another hunter (or a dozen or so) to track the offender down. Policing isn't required, because it is available for purchase. How is Nen a secret when you can see it on TV... how can someone hold a patent on something that they have mass produced and sold. Looking at something isn't the same as being able to replicate it. Just because you've seen a 90 lbs person punch a 350 lbs person over a 20 foot wall, doesn't mean you'd have any idea how it was done. Henchmen throwing lives away... yeah it doesn't make sense. But name me an action movie, series... anything where that doesn't happen.

But yes, they totally ditched easily the most interesting plotline. They set up Kurapika's story to continue on in the Greed Island arc, and then that just went nowhere and the arc resolved itself without any further mention of phantom troupe or their leader. Hell, did they ever even pick up Leorio at any point after the... what brief mention just .... after? the tournament arc... before the tournament arc. Hell I even forgot when they ditched his entire character altogether. Apparently he just got his hunters license then got out of fighting and just became a doctor... the end.

I finished the first episode last night. I am hooked, but I gonna have put it on hold for now. The second half of Stone Ocean comes out today on Netflix. It came so suddenly. I forgot it is airing this soon.

  • Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
  • Dirty Pair
  • Kill La Kill
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - More so the later parts, but even in the earlier parts, mooks and henchmen are not that big a focus.
  • Ghost in the Shell - Most of the time.
  • Redline
  • Shaman King

Dirty Pair Flash - Too long since I watched, don't remember henchmen or their potential absence of self preservation instincts.
Kill La Kill - Don't remember henchmen being focused on very much
Jojo's - On backlog, haven't bothered with it yet.
Ghost in a Shell - Only have seen the original movie, yeah you're right. They do... except when they don't.
Redline and Shaman Ki - never seen either
Vampire Hunter D: only saw the original '85 movie. Don't remember there being many cannon fodder types. The antagonists were generally seeming "mid-boss" level or higher

Is Fist of the North Star torture porn?
No.

Dirty Pair Flash
I'm more so referring to the original and New Dirty Pair. There are mooks at times, but most of them don't die. Flash might as well have been its own series and drop the name entirely.

Shaman Ki - never seen either
I meant to say Shaman King, but for some reason I forgot to put the last remaining letters.

Bloodlust is so much better. The 1985 original movie, is boring it's just another gore schlockfest. Most of D's opponents are either mini boss or boss level style people he's dealing with.

Would Attack on Titan be torture/gore porn?

I don't like AoT, but no. That show ain't torture porn either.
So at what point is something torture/gore porn? I would define something like Elfen Lied as torture porn but I'm not sure at what point something tips over into being so. (This is all just philosophical "What is a man?!" stuff so don't take me too seriously)

I think that classifying something as torture/gore porn means that the point of it is the gore/torture. That's why I'm not sure I would classify something like Elfen Lied as torture porn, since I think it had something to say beyond just the suffering. I think something like the Final Destination movies are much more deserving of that title since those seem to be about creative ways to kill off their cast.

If we're really going to get into it: EL definitely count for me. It fetishsizes the gore a bit too much. That's not even getting into the amount of nudity on kids/teens; usually girls. As for another anime example, Genocyber. You're on your own with that one.

I wouldn't really classify that as torture porn either, but then I guess this can differ from person to person. I'd say torture porn is all about reveling in the physical anguish of the character on the receiving end. Stuff like Elfen Lied and Genocyber I'd label as edgy violence rather than torture porn, and the Final Destination movies as gore fests which is more about "celebrating" consequence-free, over-the-top violence.

I think so. Cause some really good things can be really brutal, like 'the Green Room'. Or take Fallout 3, there are plenty of bags of body parts around, you have a slow down time thing when you blow limbs off, etc, I don't think that would be torture/gore porn. But something like... I think its called Thriller, old 8 bit graphics, but the first level just has you shooting people that are tied up to walls. I think they have rudimentary screams, but everything about its presentation shows its age, but I really do think that is torture/gore porn.

I can see the edgy violence lable for those, well, Elfen at least, I think I only watched the start of Genocyber before deciding I had no interest, but I also might be confusing it with something else.

Could be, like with Genocyber I decided I had no interest in the final destination series, but I have seen some of its kills on youtube.

Well, I've only seen it once (and not even past that Chimera arc) but I didn't really have any of those questions. I didn't gather it was necessary to kill people in the hunter exam, just that it was possible to kill that many.
It would have been trivial to design tests that were non-fatal or had safety nets in place. There really is no justification for all the needless death we saw in the Hunter Exam. Even many of the individuals we saw fail were very skilled and either needed more training to be able to pass the test or would have been very valuable in another occupation. It's just a pointless waste to design a deadly test just to determine that someone is not good enough to be a hunter.

Becoming a Hunter basically puts you above the law, and gives you a huge amount of power with no responsibilities. Beyond all of the legal and financial benefits, they also give you training to develop super powers. The leaders of the organization all seem to be morally decent people, and yet nobody seems to think that maybe keeping obvious violent psychopaths like Hisoka and Illumi out of the organization might be a good thing. I can understand not wanting to make it into another Justice League, but it's just kind of ridiculous.

I'm not talking about replicating it, but the very fact that it even exists seems to be a surprise to our entire cast, including Killua who comes from a family of Nen users. The show simultaneously treats it as a secret only known to a select few individuals and also shows it being used in televised sporting events. When are sitting in an arena and watch a guy clone himself and cut someone's arm off, which is then miraculously re-attached, I think the only conclusion that can be reached is that magic is real. This would be known and discussed by everybody.

But yes, they totally ditched easily the most interesting plotline. They set up Kurapika's story to continue on in the Greed Island arc, and then that just went nowhere and the arc resolved itself without any further mention of phantom troupe or their leader. Leorio does come back and play an active role in the arc after Chimera Ant, so if you want more Leorio you need to sit through that first. Don't get me wrong, there are some good moments in the Chimera Ant arc, but it's definitely this show's Frieza arc.
