Okay I didn't follow what Jim was trying to say about cellphones. Does Overwatch 2 really require you to give them your cell data to play?!

Yes. If you have a contract phone, you have to give them the number, and they will go through your data. They won't accept prepaid phones, only contract.Does Overwatch 2 really require you to give them your cell data to play?!
But why? What does your cell data have to do with a hero shooter?Yes. If you have a contract phone you get the new phone number, they will go through your data. They won't accept prepaid phones; only contract.
They said it was to try to catch trolls, troublemakers and cheaters, but a majority of people playing the game are not buying it. Not even the super hardcore defenders are buying it. They're probably using cell data to see what type of and how frequent purchases people make, and how AB can exploit it.But why? What does your cell data have to do with a hero shooter?
Honestly I think its a bit of both. They said it was to try to catch trolls, troublemakers and cheaters, but a majority of people playing a game are not buying it. Not even the super hardcore defenders are buying it. They're probably using cell data to see what type of and how frequent purchases people make, and how AB can exploit it.
But how is it supposed to better catch trolls and cheaters? I get wanting user data, text logs, and emails to track purchases and better market to whales. I get that. Its evil and malicious, but I get it.They said it was to try to catch trolls, troublemakers and cheaters, but a majority of people playing the game are not buying it. But what use is a cell number for catching a cheater? what, are they gonna call the number and ask to speak with your mom? Why not just claim someone hacked your account or stole your phone? A phone number is just that, a number. Its no proof of anything except that its a number.
And any cheater or troll who their salt has a hundred fake numbers and fake email accounts and will be doing their little song and dance without any interference from Blizzard.
It's all bullcrap. You know what it is. Try not to act too flabbergasted. They're just hoping or expecting a majority of people to be dumb enough to fall for it.But how is it supposed to better catch trolls and cheaters? And Overwatch 2 sorry for the cynicism will probably still prosper despite the people at the helm either equal or more shitty than Pitchford. Besides Randy after the porn reddit nonsense went into his hole and it was handle by in house team who care about listening to players, making new content and adding lore. Was not enough to make it grow which is why I hate this idea of perpetual growth in games. I am still hurt because Battleborn had a meaty enough single player content but since servers are down its all dead.IDK, given how it was led by Randy Pitchford, I feel like the game would've failed one way or another
I'd like one of our resident corporate apologists to explain how this isn't theft.Blizzard fixes ‘Overwatch 2’ auto-purchase bug, but refuses to offer refunds
An 'Overwatch 2' bug has seen players accidentally making store purchases while talking in chat, but Blizzard isn't offering refundswww.nme.com
At this point, I've ran out of the insults I can throw at Acti-Bliz, and it's a waste of my time
"Video games are expensive to make! They're going to use that money to make the game and online better! They aren't taking that much money! The money is going to go to the developers! I want to see more alternate costumes of my waifus!".I'd like one of our resident corporate apologists to explain how this isn't theft.
Hang on a second; Blizzard are not a phone carrier, they cannot provision new telephone numbers for your on your service. And even if an individual said 'Yeah, go for it', the mobile phone carrier still has to offer Blizzard an access portal to see the data from your phone and I cannot imagine a single one of them would agree to that.Yes. If you have a contract phone you get the new phone number, they will go through your data.
Ignore that. Google speak fucked up and I did not notice until you quoted me. I already fixed it.Hang on a second; Blizzard are not a phone carrier, they cannot provision new telephone numbers for your on your service. Okay your syntax on this is ambiguous as fuck my dude but I think it get it so allow me to postulate what you're saying is "You supply Blizzard your phone number and they will send an authentication message to you as an SMS but only to contract based accounts because they are attributable to a person, where most pre-paid phones in America are not".Ignore that. Google speak fucked up and I did not notice until you quoted me. I already fixed it.
Blizzard is more than likely looking through data of dlc, micro transactions, and whatever season passes people spend on. I would not be surprised, if that was part of the case.Because saying 'going through your data' implies that they are then in fact looking through the data either on or accessed by your phone, which would be overreach by a video game company to such an extreme that I feel Governments would be asking them to explain themselves.
If that's the case, Google should have been questioned by the government a long time ago. Getting advertisements based off your searches in Google or online retailers. Most of which that are powered by Google.Governments would be asking them to explain themselves.
That too, yet Blizzard's reasoning is dumb, and only punishes with the lack of phones, or can't afford the more luxurious phones. They expect people to pay $60-70+ for this shit, with all of the other rancid shit on top of it? Fuck off Activision-Blizzard!You supply Blizzard your phone number and they will send an authentication message to you as an SMS but only to contract based accounts because they are attributable to a person, where most pre-paid phones in America are not".
They don't need access to your phone to do this; their own sale history would give them the information they need without having to negotiate with phone providers to access their data.Blizzard is more than likely looking through data of dlc, micro transactions, and whatever season passes people spend on. That's kind of how cookies and stuff like that work, more or less always has. Google has turned it into the obscene feedback loop that it is now, though. If that's the case, Google should have been questioned by the government a long time ago. My observation of the situation is that it has nothing to do with the handset, since even the most basic *****, $80 android based handset can receive the kind of message for the 2FA to work. The rub appears that contracts with a monthly cost are attributable to a person because identification and banking details are provided at point of purchase because duh, its a contract. That too, yet Blizzard's reasoning is dumb, and only punishes with the lack of phones, or can't afford the more luxurious phones. They don't "need" to, but would do it anyway because they could. I would not put it past AB, after all the scummy shit they've done for a decade. They don't need access to your phone to do this; their own sale history would give them the information they need without having to negotiate with phone providers to access their data.
Which only further proves my point. That's kind of how cookies and stuff like that work, more or less always has. Google has turned it into the obscene feedback loop that it is now, though.
They can also jam that audio monitoring chat thing up their arses.
Still stupid and punishes those who lack or can't afford contract phones. It reeks of exclusivity (intentional or not) and does nothing to stop the hackers, cheaters, and trolls. People who try to pay and play the game legitimately are getting the crack whip more than the butt-fucks ruining people's games. My observation of the situation is that it has nothing to do with the handset, since even the most basic *****, $80 android based handset can receive the kind of message for the 2FA to work. You're confusing 'scummy' with 'highly illegal'. And requiring a massive criminal conspiracy between Blizzard and every single telecom provider on the planet. They can't just waltz into another corporation's data servers: that shit requires access and the agreement of Joe Sixpack the dipshit is, funnily enough, not sufficient. They don't "need" to, but would do it anyway because they could. I would not put it past AB, after all the scummy shit they've done for a decade.
Well actually it kind of does in a broad and heavy handed way. Let us say a player has linked their Overwatch 2 account to their phone number. Both the Overwatch 2 account and Phone Contract share about 90% the same details; name, address, credit card etc. So lets say our hypothetical player is just the biggest piece of shit: breaks the rules, uses hacks or exploits and just conducts themselves personally with all the restraint of a chimp throwing its own shit. So one day, BAM! Banned. Now from my point of view the only way to get back in is to commit no small amount of identity fraud setting up a false identity. Because the only reason I can fathom that this issue hasn't occurred in Australia is because all phone services - prepaid or contract - require photographic identification to set up but do not in America, hence the prevalence of burner phones.Still stupid and punishes those who lack or can't afford contract phones.
