The article didn’t articulate very well as to where on the scale of tech savviness Gen Z is actually, and where are they expected to be. It mentions them growing up with technology that older generations “had to learn” by contrast, but the point still stands why they aren’t learning or even being taught what is apparently considered adequate is kind of baffling. While it’s unreasonable one should expect every Gen Z’er to innately know specialized IT training more than older peers, the problem sounds more fundamental than that.
What tech? Seems that the main complaints centre around business comms and professional software, so who the fuck grows up with that? Why should people have to grow up with that just to save some businesses having to take the time to train their new hires? Especially when pre-COVID, unless you already worked in a relatively digitised workplace, you probably wouldn't have had any exposure to this software as most bosses hated the living shit out of it. Letting the peons talk amongst themselves? 'Seemless collaborations'? HERESY AGAINST THE CHICAGO SCHOOL!!!

If that’s the case with employers assuming high level shit then they have no one to blame but themselves. But, again, what the fuck is even being taught in schools to prepare the future workforces if all they apparently know is social media bullshit that most people’s grandmothers know. It’s like an extension of the “experience needed” tagline on job boards that people fresh out of school may as well wipe their asses with.

Sounds like bollocks to me. Sounds more like tech-sided businesses grumpy they have do to something themselves.

Also, what about that 'skip a meeting if the tech was going to be disruptive' disruptive to who? and seems the Zs have some social consciousness and don't want to be like seen like their grandparents walking around the supermarket shouting into a phone that's held at arm's length.

Well, most computer classes I took in school - for reference I had my first school computer lab in 4th grade and those ran Win 3.11 - were largely around using word processors, spreadsheets and a bit of power point; unless they were specialised. We didn’t have school email in in my final years; most of us were using Hotmail at the time. Thankfully email is easy to learn, especially MS Outlook, so beyond knowing how to use those four basic Microsoft Office products and how to run a Google Search and how to enter a URL, there isn’t much else a school will teach about computers.

Of course this conversation is predicated on the foundation that IT based stuff is the technology in question (though it certainly seems that way) and not things like how to change spark plugs or change a tap. In which case I will happily admit to needing some education in that area.

We had BBC Micros and we had to hand code pretty much anything we wanted done.

Also, get off my lawn.

Russia has a Naval Vessel that has been in service since 1913. This means it's served the Imperial Russian Navy, the Soviet Navy and the Current Russian Navy, as well as through two World Wars. It's probably one of the oldest Naval Vessels in Active Service and not just Museum Ships like the USS Constitution and the HMS Victory(I know they're technically since in active service but both ships are basically ceremonial at this point. No one is ever gonna deploy them to a war zone).

The National Football League lost a great a couple days ago, Franco Harris. in 1972, he scored the Pittsburgh Steelers' game-winning touchdown against the Oakland Raiders in what's probably the most famous play of the game, the Immaculate Reception. I've seen the play dozens of times; said the name "Franco Harris" dozens of times. Yesterday I learned his name was "Franco Harris," and NOT "Frank O'Harris." I feel like an idiot and am grateful that in my +30 years of NFL fandom I never had to write his name down revealing my ignorance to the football-loving world

Making scrambled egg in the microwave. Game changer.
Additional tip, cook the eggs to a point where there is still a little bit - need to eyeball it cos it varies on how many eggs were used - of uncooked egg and stir around the rest of the cooked bit through that, allowing the residual heat to cook the rest of the egg. And voila! Creamy and delicious microwave scrambled eggs.
Ever tried a tablespoon or so of mayonnaise? Hellmann’s even has a vegan option that makes eggs nice and fluffy. Not sure how much results would vary when microwaving, or if the fluffiness would perhaps be compounded. Might give it a whirl.
Mass quoted for visibility in case you all wanted to try it, but... when I was a kid and microwaved eggs (cause I couldn't cook them myself) I used to mix in cheese whiz with it. While probably objectively terrible, it was delicious back then.
Though now that I can pan cook my own eggs I've never felt the need to microwave them. Very different flavour when done that way

Curiosity on that last part led me to this from Quora -
There is a difference in taste and texture. For one, microwaves cook from the interior outward and sort of explode the cellular structures of the eggs. The rapid cooking often will cause them to explode or puff high then sink like a blown soufflé. It is best to limit the time to 20–45 seconds per egg.

Also this doesn’t eggxactly sound very awesome -

Facial/eye trauma, FFS.

Russia apparently has a long, dignified history of fucking up military operations in a way that comes across as a Dark Comedy. Notably the 2nd Pacific Squadron during the Russo-Japanese War.

I mean, they barely left the Baltic and almost started a war with the UK by "Accidently" shelling a fleet of British Fishing Trawlers and the only reason it wasn't worse is because they were such poor shots that most of the shells missed their targets. Except the few where they started shelling each other for some bizarre reason.

As a former US Sailor, I appreciate the sheer amount of fuckupery(I don't know if that was a word before but it is now) on display here especially knowing that as many times I fucked up in the US Navy, I could never outdo these guys. To be fair, I was middle Enlisted at best and not an Admiral with a screaming habit.

Interestingly, was a big kerfuffle at the time, because people previously thought that a European force could not be defeated by an Asian one, because reasons. People suddenly had to reassess their views in light of the really obvious.

Ironically, despite that, the Japanese apparently barely won the war and really didn't have much leverage over Russia during peace talks. Causlties were roughly the same if I'm not mistaken and the Japanese Economy took quite a hit. Tsushima was a catastrophe for the Russian Navy(which was essentially wiped out) but Russia could have probably still won if it had really wanted to.

Ironically, Japan would learn some bad lessons from this which would eventually lead to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Per my limited understanding of this particular war anyway.

In 1997 James Cameron gave Guillermo del Toro $1 million to help pay the ransom after del Toro's dad was kidnapped in Guadalajara. They released him 3 days later. Criminals were never found, money was never recovered.
I had no idea that had occurred. Jesus, Del Toro must have been beside himself at the time.

Apparently that's the reason why he (and his family) moved definitely to the United States afterwards.

Q: That must have been absurdly frightening.

A: It was. It is. Every day, every week, something happens that reminds me that I am in involuntary exile [from my country]. But to talk about life in a direct way is the work of other types of storytellers. As a man, the kidnapping defined my life. As a storyteller, I try to define myself.
