Speech is over, at 1hr 45 (about half of which was on domestic issues rather than the war). Nothing particularly new, no conciliation, more fabricated historical justifications and nationalist sabre rattling.

Only notable announcement was that Russia is withdrawing from New START.

* Condemns the West for going against "scripture" in recognising same sex marriage;

* Claims that paedophilia is "announced as a normal thing" in the West.

OK, we've arrived at the screaming far-right Christian-nationalist bigot section of the speech.
Are we sure that Putin didn't accidentally pick up a copy of Tucker Carlson's fanfiction?

Performing for much the same crowd, so may as well.

And, while I don't care about the Satan thing (hell, lots of their enemies probably aren't Christian, so may as well play the religion card), the bit about pedophiles...c'mon, glass houses, as a rule.

With the Satan thing, it's worth noting for two reasons;

A) the Christian-nationalist rhetoric is explicitly front-and-centre to justify the war;

B) they increasingly use Satanism and Nazism interchangeably. It shows how shallow the rest of their accusations are; hollow rage bait.

Some demons better stay away from windows lest they fall out of them for snitching.

Sorry, it's been a long day, my metaphors are fucked to hell.

Speaking of windows....

Talk like that earns you a one way ticket through the window glass, Yevgeny. You of all people know what kind of people you work for.

Russia really wants to accelerate the brain drain,. Huh?

It's hard not to watch this and think even if they somehow manage to win this they've done so much much damage to themselves for the long term it will be the most pryhric of victories.

Russia continues to reintroduce the finest in mid cold war technology to the battlefield. Welcome back from Retirement, BMP-1.

The Russian army in a year has written off around 1,300 BMPs of all models. But a thousand were BMP-2s and BMP-3s with their thicker armor. The Russians could lose even more IFVs in the next year as the older, and much more vulnerable, BMP-1 once again becomes their standard fighting vehicle. Just like in 1966.
Yes, Russia on paper has a ton of these damn things. But like a lot of tanks now, they're 60 fucking years old and been sitting in storage with a questionable amount actually operable.

Unlike A T-62/T-64, they don't have a prayer of surviving a tank round or an ATGM(or even something like a TOW), but nobody really expects an APC to survive a tank round regardless. Arguably, the main gun(a 25mm rapid fire cannon) on a Bradly could more then handle a BMP-1.

This isn't doing anything to convince me that Russia isn't scraping the barrel as far as armored vehicles go.

The boring one
I also appreciate just how dapper the man is. Suit and a bowler. So much confidence in his go cart with a machine gun mounted on it. The 19th century was wild, man.
Also is that a little bell, on the handlebars ?

I want a sound recording of the battlefield.

Eh, if they've got the logistics to run them, they could work as support vehicles, just keep them away from the fighting. Which is not how I expect them to be used.

Failing that, if their weapon systems still work, they still are of use in the fighting, if used correctly, which I don't expect they will be.

Orcs will probably drive them into mines like they do tanks.
