Wow forespoken did so bad they legit shut the studio down.

I wonder if it has to do with their president resigning recently too. We've not seen SE do such dramatic moves in like a decade. And it's always with stuff aimed at a western audience more than a Japanese one too for some odd reason.

Most of already know at this point. Did you just find out now? I know two different posts were made on the General Gaming News thread.

So I take it we're not seeing a sequel then?

I legit don't care either way. honestly. I kept an open mind before it came out and then the reviews convinced me not to bother. Apparently it went on discount really recently which I suspect is not good news.

The game would have really benefited from having a FFIV-style character arc for the protagonist where she starts out as a misanthropic asshole and ends up redeemed and a good person through experiencing character growth, but she just stays that way all game long. It's an Isekai with no sense of charm or magic to the alternate world, and it has literal magic in it.

Nothing quite worked with the game, but a lot of it would have been very hard/expensive to fix (the world was massive but had little in it to justify the size, it needed far more content and more human settlement) but the story section would have been an easy fix that would have really helped the game. The main character growth is almost negative, in the end she discoverer that racism is an awesome way to live and only bother saving the magical world once she find out that her mom is from there, whereas before she just wanted to go back to NY and leave everyone to die . Rewriting this would have cost nothing (might even be cheaper since iirc they hired some "famous writer" or something). The worse part for the studio is that the people who lost their job by and large did it correctly, change the writer of the game and maybe have a director that doesn't make the map quite this massive and the game could have been considered a decent if unspectacular game.

The writer may be famously bad lol, and it was a westerner too, which explains a lot of the themes found in the characterization that feel alien to Jrpgs. Though I don't think they got fired cause Japan has very good employment protection laws, they just got absorbed back into SE and ceased to be a studio with creative autonomy to make whatever they want however they want.

Also I remember seeing mention of the game being totally different from the original concept that was pitched. That's prolly to do with it, since the original wouldn't have been approved if it wasn't at least half way decent.

Is the White Engine / Crystal Tools / Luminous Engine nightmare finally over?

Can't say I expected much from Luminous Productions and Forspoken from the get go, looking at how Final Fantasy XV was handled by them.

With FFXV they dropped a product barely resembling a finished game and with promise of "we'll fix it over the next 12 months! We'll listen to your feedback!".

Well, fuck any studio that operates under that motto. Even with all the patching they did, they never fixed the Jump / Confirm button mash up they fucked up with in the non-Japanese release.

Oh, it's worse that they delivered an incomplete story that you had to fill in the remaining gaps by:

1.) Purchasing DLC(some of which were canceled)
2.) Watching an Anime series
3.) Watching an Anime movie.

So basically if you were interested in the worldbuilding/story, you need to go do homework, that you had to probably pay extra for because they couldn't be bothered to incorporate it into a 50+ hour game.

"Oh Noctis, your father was killed in a massive attack on the city, which is now occupied by the enemy force, that sure sound like something that we should have been there to experience in person to build up the main antagonist and you relation with your dad, but nah, here's a newspaper about it, lets just bum around instead". iirc, that movie was even available for free, so it wasn't even greed that let them to do that, just pure incompetence.

They were just trying to bring true "immersion" to the video game & non-gaming audience audience.
