I don't even play on PC any more but I'm so mad that these games keep getting crap PC ports. So mad.
It is quite unfortunate, I agree. PC may have the graphical fidelity advantage and better suited for mods if the game allows it, but performance is always inconsistent I do sometimes miss my console days because of it. I will be waiting a bit before I get JS. I know I meet the specs well and over, I just want the game to run smoothly.

My position is a bit awkward as my current console is an XBox Series S, one that reviewers don't use. FextraLife's review praises XBox's performance but I must assume it is the X. Either way, I never play games on release any more because even if you're on the "right" system, they still gotta patch it.

The Series S is so pointless to get. The only reason my brother got it, is because he didn't have an X at the time and even take him long to get the Series X. S is used mainly as a backup Xbox. He's got a ps5, so now it's almost even more pointless.

It's not pointless, it's what I use to play games lol. What is this comment even?
If you have a 1080p TV/monitor and you like GamePass and you don't care about physical media, it's the most logical practical gaming console to get. In 2023 alone it encouraged my to play your beloved Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Ghostwire Tokyo, three excellent games that got my out of my Ubi-funk.
Each console has strengths and weaknesses, none replace any of the others. PS5 doesn't have GamePass.

I didn't say pointless for you. I just said it's pointless for those who either want physical, or better version of the console. And there are many I have seen that dropped or traded in the S when the X became available. Considering the stories we've heard and seen of games are performing bad or worse on an S (or on any of these overpriced consoles), and these are supposed to be luxury consoles with all that hardware, you'd expect better.

And that's the underlying the problem itself isn't inherent, but let's see if you end up loving that game more than you realize, and it gets digitally delisted either cuz a company shut down comedy copyright reasons, or just a company being petty, good luck playing that game ever again unless you know somebody has that game on their console and you buy it from them.

I am happy for you, I'm glad it was able to do that. Isn't Ghostwire PS5 exclusive? I know there isn't an Xbox version yet.

I don't consider that a bad thing, considering Game Pass is glorified DRM, and it's been eating Microsoft in the butt. Not that Sony's PS plus is exactly better. Especially how they changed it up and how it functions now.

It was exclusive for a year, that year is up, IIRC. It came to GamePass a month or two ago. (I know, it does feel like that game just came out, but time flies)

As for the rest- just doesn't effect me, personally.
Serious question- which games perform worse on S? I mean really worse- I don't count it worse if it's less fames on a 4K TV, since the Series S is not made for that. I mean like using the same monitor, same game that came out, and it sucks on S but is fine on X, is that a thing? Microsoft doesn't allow it (which is the thing that pisses some people off but, again, not my problem and I have yet to see specific examples).

The closest thing I can think of is Baldur's Gate 3 struggling to support multiplayer on Series S. But we just have to take their word for it and I don't even get why that would makes sense as multiplayer performance has always been about the server side issues not the front-end.

That's the thing, it's not about you. You have to take nearly everyone in consideration. You may not care, but there are plenty of others that do.

The 4K thing doesn't bother me much, but once again these are luxury consoles meant to play on these type of screens and they can't get them to run properly either because they cheap out on material, or Microsoft isn't doing a good enough job and helping developers program their games on the system.

Resident Evil 4 Remake and Evil West (it's usually not too bad, but even developers said they struggled to get it to run properly on the Series S) actually perform worse on the Xbox than PS5. Then there's Calisto Protocol, but that one is somewhat more the fault of the actual developers. Still, the game really only runs great on PS5. And once again, these are games charged $70 plus on consoles that are $500 something dollars.

More on that (it’s Gamerant but point still stands) -

Disappointment surrounding this then circled online, where Lee Denovald from Rocksteady (who was not involved in Gotham Knights' development) blamed the Xbox Series S GPU and claimed this generation of gaming to be "hamstrung by that potato." Denovald noted that Microsoft "won't let you launch on one without the other," which forces developers to optimize for the Xbox Series S, an assertion that has been recently backed up by indie developer Ian Maclure.

In a reply on Twitter that is no longer able to be seen, Ian Maclure countered veteran journalist Jeff Gerstmann's opinion that given the variety of PC hardware that needs to be accounted for, the argument that Xbox Series S is handicapping this generation holds no water. Maclure, a VFX artist at Bossa who has worked on titles that came to Xbox Series X/S and PC, claimed "MANY developers have been sitting in meetings for the past years desperately trying to get Series S launch requirements dropped." Maclure continued, saying that having experienced "one development cycle where Series S turned out to be an albatross around the neck of production," studios are not keen to "repeat the process," especially with more games now being developed exclusively for the current generation of consoles.

Geez they really have a bad habit of doing this kinda thing with their hardware. Remember the 360 sku that didn’t even have a hard drive? Similar nightmare for game development then too.

You know, it’s kinda funny how Microsoft basically shits money and can afford more than anyone to be a loss leader, yet still releases a bunk console and tells people they’re getting a great value. Whereas if they just put some meat on it from the onset and charged even $50 more for the thing they could keep developers happy and still grow a respectable install base.

Yeah I remember that story. And I discounted it because it's unnamed sources and reads like a bunch of excuses. It's also out of touch with consumers, IMO.

I didn't realize I had strong opinions about hardware but I guess I do but honestly it's a reflection of the industry. And it's like this:

Of course there's dev and testing to account of the Series S. Of course.
But also, there are PC's, and that is WAY more diverse and complicated than having two XBoxes. And we're seeing major titles release with crap performance for PC's that are more powerful than the lowly Series S.

So please everyone just spare me this Series S = albatross nonsense until games work on freakin' PC's.
I would understand if there is a declared and understood base minimum of tech that new games coming out should match. That is in fact normal in consumer electronics (i.e., people have learned that their phones become obsolete at some point. Really we have Apple to "thank" for training the world on the limits of back-support). But what it that?

Here is one breakdown of what a PC equivalent of Series S is:

The interesting factor: Video card: EVGA SC ULTRA GAMING GTX 1660 6 GB ($189.99)

Seems like nothing, so low-end, right? Sure- why? Is it fair to ask game devs to support such low-end graphics?
Well- yes. And the reason comes down to the monitor. This GPU supports 1440p. And I know I keep coming back to this point but I can't get past it- most of us normies still game on 1080p!
You make a big deal video game that you want to sell to as many people as you can, you gotta make it run on yo gramma's TV, that's the reality, and that means- logically, technically, Series S.
The tech albatross of the Series S is therefore 100% bullshit excuses.

Ok, the other thing- discs? Ok well, again- PC's. Nobody builds them with DVD drives any more.
I am not shitting on PC's, I love them, I have built two of my own and plan on a third when I build my home office within the next couple of years if things go the way I hope for myself personally and professionally. And lemme tell you when I did a build and was collaborating on reddit and PC Builder and including an optical drive, I was constantly getting asked and mocked for that. It's considered a niche accessory. Physical media is effectively non-existent in the PC game space.

So if you wanna talk about physical media games preservation or old tech or whatever, that's all well and good (see I actually do care about this stuff) but reckon with PC's before coming at any one console.
And this ain't MS loyalty- I also will push back on Switch being dismissed as "old tech" even though I don't like Nintendo. Remember this when Tears of the Kingdom comes out and oh boy the takes that will be took, lol.

GameRant aside, it's actually a good article and something that should be read. It's all about perspective and understanding.

Black Girl Gamers Founder Talks What Video Games Have Done Right And Wrong For Diversity And Inclusion

Black Girl Gamers is a community-powered business that specializes in heightening Black women in the gaming industry. BGG was founded in 2015 and has grown from a small Facebook group to a multifaceted company that now publishes content creation, offers workshops and mentorship programs, does video game consultations, and more all to encourage representation and equity in the space.

CEO and Founder of Black Girl Gamers Jay-Ann Lopez spoke with Game Rant in a recent interview about the need for new, original content that explores different cultures, which hasn't been done enough. She also named which video games are on the right path for diversity and inclusivity, and others that still need some work to do.

Cultural Folklore And Mythology Are Important

The Witcher 3 is one of Lopez's favorite video games, which has received praise for its gameplay, narrative, and world design -- along with winning a lot of Game of the Year awards -- but has gotten backlash for having only White characters. Lopez said that she knows The Witcher 3 is based predominantly on a Polish novel, or more specifically Slavic mythology, so she thinks it would be unnecessary to change any of the characters.

I'm not averse to having White characters. I'm just annoyed at how prevalent they are. I wouldn't want to change an existing character that I can think of at the moment. One of my favorite games, The Witcher 3, is predominantly based on a Polish novel. I have seen no need for me to change that main character.
What I want is more stories that are authentic to Black and Brown and Non-White POC to be reflected in. I don't want to necessarily have to “racebend” an existing character for me. That's not the epitome of representation. It works in some ways, but I want some original content.
Instead, Lopez wants video games that look into the myths and lore of Non-White cultures like the Philippines, she said for example. It's not common to see a Filipino character, but some recognizable ones could be Isabella Rosario Dulnuan Reyes from Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone, who is a 21-year-old operator in the Trident faction, and Josie Rizel from Tekken 7, whose fighting style is kickboxing and eskrima—a traditional martial art of the Philippines—and whose name is inspired by Filipino national hero, Jose Rizal. But, aside from those characters, there hasn't been a mainstream video game that focuses on the country's lore and mythology, which is the case for many ethnicities.

Raji, a single-player action-adventure game that follows a young girl in ancient India, was one video game that allowed Lopez to explore a different culture through its gameplay, and she "loved it."
The team is, I believe, Indian, [and] the main character is an Indian female character. I played that game and I loved it. It's like dipping into someone else's history and it's more educational in their culture as opposed to having people who don't know the culture talk about it.
Apex Has Done Well, But Overwatch Still Needs Work

Lopez told Game Rant that, she feels, strong representation is mostly prevalent in games that have character rosters like Apex Legends and Overwatch, but she credited Apex for covering "a lot of bases" with their diverse characters like Bangalore, who is Black; Crypto, who is Korean; and Gibraltar, who is a Pacific Islander, among many others. Apex has also been considered the most diverse video game by many, with multiple ethnicities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations being represented.

Apex is definitely one that's done quite well. The intention is there, and the same with Overwatch. Overwatch didn't have a Black female character for so long, and they had six White characters that were male, seven White characters that were female And I was like, “Where's the Black women?” Out of the two, I would pick Apex because obviously they represent me and that's what I'm here for really and truly.
Deathloop was also great and Ghost of Tshushima. I'm not Japanese, so I cannot speak to the cultural accuracy, but I really enjoyed that game. Again, Raji is another one as well.
But other than Apex and Overwatch, Lopez said that she wants to see more done by companies who build franchises around White characters.

What I'm also looking for from these companies that create franchises around White characters – the Tomb Raiders, The Witcher 3s, the Nathan Drakes, The Last of Us – are playable protagonists that have their own franchises that are non-White. We don't see that very often either.
What Black Girl Gamers Are Doing
Black Girl Gamers has created an accepting community for Black women and Black non-binary people, which is made up of almost 10,000 people, and has simultaneously increased the visibility of Black women streamers and content creators through their TikTok, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. They hold in-person and online workshops and mentorship programs that can connect community members with other Black people who work in the gaming industry. BGG also does consultations for video games to increase representation, pushing for more diversity and representation in the industry.

Overall, it's just closing the gaps in all of these different areas, putting people forward for opportunities, and providing insight and knowledge. That's been our focus for the last eight years, and it continues to be.

I also want to add attention to Raji- all I saw about it was the novelty that it was developed by an Indian studio but it's actually a really good game. Sure the novelty of its origin is what attracted me, but I genuinely enjoyed actually playing the whole thing. Nothing about the gameplays is like mindblowing, but it's one of those games where the whole package comes together well. And it's not long and it doesn't waste your time like so many Western and Japanese games, and it looks hella good.
I played it on Gamepass, though I think it left the service, it's worth a buy for anyone looking for a nice little game to play.
