Less players than forspoken. Let that sink in for a minute
I was gonna say this is a pretty poor showing for the people who made Dishonored. Then again, I see they made Wolfenstein: Youngblood so I guess they already know how it feels to fall.

Also, I'm gonna mention I like the idea of Youngblood, but the execution is apparently pretty....meh. Let's go with meh.

Ok seriously, what hell is going on with Arkane?! I didn't even know they took part in developing Youngblood. I thought that was all Machine Games doing. How the fuck do these guys and gals keep dropping the ball, and made the same mistakes as Wolfenstein (2009), but making them even worse in Youngblood.

Apparently FFXVI is being denied release in saudi arabia because SE is refusing to censor the game for them.

Sweet, now lets keep this mindset when other nations ask for such things too.

Seriously, though. I really liked Prey 2017, and thought Arkane would keep making great games. Deathloop was okay, but just not for me. And now they keep hitting south

Maybe they should. Maybe Microsoft should take the SEGA Route and just make games and forget about the console. Put Halo on Playstation, Switch, and PC and just become a massive 3rd party publisher without having to worry about hardware or keeping up with console demands.
Honestly, I think it's somewhat of a pride reason. Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world, has more money than God, and one of the dominant computer platforms, especially gaming PCs. It, after so long admitting defeat to a children's video game company with a plumber as a mascot, and a company so infamous for its fuck ups, and poor products this video exists.

There also may be a bit of a nationalistic element. (The original xbox's name was the Manhattan project) Microsoft leaving would mean America giving up any semblance of market dominance in video games except for PC. Becoming equals, or second fiddles too Japanese companies when it comes to games could be humiliating for some in the industry. (I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this was one of the reasons the Activision deal was attempted). And let's not forget places like Europe gaming space, and the rise of Chinese games means more competition ,and more threat to American dominance in that entertainment space.

For these two reasons I do not expect Xbox to step out of the console industry. Unlike Sega, Microsoft can bleed money in the video game sector considering all the other stuff they developed, but it will be interesting to see the strategy going forward.

There has been a certain amount of joy I've gotten seeing all these mega tech companies falling face first trying to dominate the gaming space. To give Microsoft credit it at least somewhat knew how to be a video game company, but it seemed to still have the problem of just throwing money at the problem.

It's just a good reminder that it's not all the same developers. People come and go and just because games are made by the same studio doesn't mean they're made by the same people. And even if it's some of the people, sometimes people do some good things and some bad things. I mean I know we all know this stuff, it's just worth reminding ourselves.

The reputation of Arkane has been a bit overblown to me? I mean, Dishonored is one of my favorite games of all time. That came out 10 years ago? How many Dishonored devs worked on Redfall or whatever. 10 years is forever in tech.
The reception for Dishonored 2 and Deathloop are very mixed (I have no strong opinion as neither interested me). Prey is a respected game but it really became that after the fact. It not making an impression says something about it. Personally I tried it and while I found much to admire, I also didn't stick with it. But people talk about it like it's some poor forgotten masterpiece and not just a solid game.

I think much of the praise for Arkane is that thing where people want a hero to contrast with their villain. I'm still not over that infamous poll or survey from a few years ago where EA were voted the most evil company in the world or some such, when Haliburton and BP and Nestle and JP Morgan and whatever Blackwater are calling themselves now still exist. So Arkane became like this hero because they came up with a distinct art style and carried on the beloved System Shock through-line of game design and didn't put predatory gambling in their games, and that's all well and good. But more time has passed with them being an interesting development house with a mixed record than them being some paragon of gamr virtue.

Don't get me wrong. I was never that big into Dishonored, and I didn't like it's morality system. I wasn't into any of Arkane's games, but I did respect them for what they were doing and trying to achieve. I know hands change and people going and go out, but this is ridiculous and sad. Platinum's recently had its growing pains and issues, but at least they're fine starting up to turn it around a little bit. After Bayonetta Origins, I hope they learn not to bother following the live service model anymore. Bayonetta 3 did sell great, but it is considered a contested sequel, and had a troubled production cycle.

Whats funny is the SkillUp video had an ad for Redfall.

Oh man, this comment -

Remember when New Colossus came out and people said that having a pregnant woman in front line combat would cause the kids to be born with permanent brain damage? I guess that's canon now.

Omg they doing it? They're actually doing it??

Or...are they?

Valiant Comics and Australian developer Blowfish Studios have announced action horror adventure game Shadowman: Darque Legacy for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It will tell an original story rooted in the comics where novice Shadowman Jack Boniface has to stop some vague emerging evil that could undermine all the good that his predecessors did. You will battle Brethren cultists, big dudes with hammers, necromancers, and “truly wretched creatures,” but you’ll have a variety of weapons with which to unleash “brutal and bloody finishers.”

We’re taking this all on faith right now, as the Shadowman: Darque Legacy reveal trailer doesn’t actually reveal much of anything. Nonetheless, an “RPG-lite” progression system will keep your character evolving his skill set to put down the horrors he encounters. Here’s what else to expect from the game:

  • Enthralling narrative: Pulse-pointed horror-action, with enthralling characters and dialogue
  • Spine-chilling horror: An atmosphere thick with nerve-fraying tension
  • Parallel worlds: Explore detailed environments across two realms, creating unique gameplay opportunities
  • Punishing combat: Challenging, yet approachable and rewarding melee combat
  • Action-packed boss encounters: Test your mettle against monstrous, demonic bosses from the darkest pits of the Deadside

Shadowman: Darque Legacy follows from Nightdive Studios’ 2022 remaster of the 1999 game Shadow Man. We shouldn’t forget that the embarrassingly titled Shadow Man: 2econd Coming was also a thing that existed back in 2002 on PlayStation 2. Hopefully Darque Legacy will adapt to modernity and introduce a whole new generation to the cult comic, whenever it’s ready for release.

Such vague wording and the pre-rendered brief cinematic makes it look more like a super early funding pitch than anything that might exist in tangible forms so far. But still, hope it turns out alright, loved the gothic atmosphere and concept, is the combat and general gameplay that needed a lot of work: an area the industry has advanced a fair bit in which is hopefully applied.

You know what else sucked about Youngblood? It came out a day before my birthday, and I was excited to get it for myself as a b-day present.

I think it was probably one of my fastest refund requests after purchase.

I've been seeing a lot of secondhand Nintendo Switches being sold on online marketplaces. For like $125 too, that's basically the price of two new games. I wonder if people pulled the trigger on buying one during the pandemic, and are now spring cleaning since they have less free time. Quite tempted to get one for my family honestly.
