Now not to be petty but OV2 dropping the reason for existence I have to say one thing.

APOLOGIZE
APOLOGIZE HARDER

Fuck modern gaming why does a game with single player content at the jump and access to bots must die because damn servers went down.

The PvE that Overwatch 2 advertised itself on, that justified the existence of an Overwatch 2 in the first place, even though it wasn't in the release version of the game...

has just been cancelled.
Sigh...

PvE wasn't cancelled. OW2 was going to launch with two types of missions - Story Missions, and Hero Missions. Only the latter was cancelled, and was replaced with Event Missions.

The "PvE was cancelled" thing spun out of one element of PvE being cancelled.

Gearbox should just revive battleborn as a major flex on blizzard. Came out same month as OW1, with PvE missions and hero progression and no cash shop iirc.
-Battleborn did have a cash shop. It actually did it playfully, given that it was the Last Light Consortium selling material while playfully acknowledging that it was pointless given that the universe was ending.

-Wait, you...enjoyed the PVE missions in Battleborn? Really? I know, different strokes, different folks, but they were a drag for me both in terms of gameplay and narrative. Battleborn's PVE was on the level of Spartan Ops in Halo 4, only at least Spartan Ops furthered the overall story, Battleborn's story couldn't even make it past the gate of being interesting. I'll grant you that Battleborn had potential with its story (Lothar Rendain was an okayish villain, the varelsi were...actually, really not even that interesting), but I'm not sure why we're even comparing the two. And if we're making an appeal to authority, I've never seen anyone say anything positive about Battleborn's story or universe, whereas in Overwatch, there's a reason why people who don't even play the game still enjoy the animated shorts for instance.

-I honestly can't remember anything about Battleborn's hero progression, but I seriously don't get the issue with this. Hero trees were removed from OW2, that's true. Okay, and? I'm not disputing that a lot of people were miffed, I just don't get why. Battleborn had hero progression in PvE, that didn't make the PvE any less tedious.

First of all, PVE was never dropped. You're conflating a PVE mode (Hero Missions) with PVE as a whole (Story Missions, Event Missions). It's like saying "game dropped its capture the flag mode, therefore it removed its multiplayer." There's all sorts of reasons to be miffed about losing a mode, fair enough, but it's an insane convolution to equate a mode of a game type with the game type itself.

Second of all, again, Battleborn. Okay, I'll play. I'm assuming that you've played both Battleborn and Overwatch (as I have), so what makes you love Battleborn's PVE so much? Because I'm sorry, I wanted to like Battleborn, really, but even confining this to PVE, its gameplay was tedious, the varelsi just aren't interesting as villains, and Rendain just isn't enough to carry a game as an antagonist. Yes, there was potential in Battleborn's universe, at least in terms of its character interactions (again, see the tension between Rendain and Deande, or Deande and Melka given the former's Dominion origins), but that was all it was. Potential.

I mean, it was the one that people actually wanted to play, the one that they advertised as the reason for the 2... Even if you take issue with the wording, that doesn't change the fact that a lot of people's reason to stick around, including mine, has gone up in smoke.

Okay, serious question, without judgement - why were you excited for Hero Missions and not Story Missions? Because I get it, a lot of people were miffed that Hero Missions were cancelled, but I was always more interested in the Story Missions. The Hero Missions struck me as a little diversion.

Because I didn't actually like the Story Missions that much when I did play them in Overwatch, as well as the fact that they're only in the game for a few weeks before vanishing into the ether. The 'Event Missions' as you call them also feel kinda overpriced for what they're selling, which is mostly bundled-in cosmetics that you can't purchase the missions without also getting the 'FREE ADDITIONAL VALUE!!!!!!' like Fox News in your cable subscription.

Also, as I said before, Hero Missions are literally what Overwatch 2 was sold on. Even if they're still technically around in a different form, it's not the one that was advertised.

That's false advertisement. They should be sued for that.

Um, Event Missions are free. You need to pay for Story Missions, not Event Missions.

Also, I really wouldn't put the Archive Missions on the level of Story Missions. It's like saying the pebble is the same size as a boulder, in that not only are Story Missions about 3X the size (at least in terms of gameplay time), but more narratively relevant as well.

Also, as I said before, Hero Missions are literally what Overwatch 2 was sold on.
Um, how?

There's no easy way to prove that, but I'm going to use maths. I checked the gameplay trailer from 2019. Confining this entirely to PVE content, here's the breakdown:

60 seconds: Story Missions

18 seconds: Both/unclear

42 seconds: Hero Missions

I know that's just one video, but I assume you have something to back up that Hero Missions were advertised more than Story Missions.

You're splitting hairs at this point, so I'm just gonna tie this conversation off.

I'm not interested in playing Overwatch 2 anymore, because I feel like I was lied to to get me to install, and the game itself just isn't as fun for me as it was in 2016 for several unrelated reasons. You can argue over definitions or maths or whatever you want for as long as you want, but I'm not going to bother responding to any more of your callouts in this thread.

I'm done. Out. Uninstalled. End of story.

Y'know, this isn't really in response to any one particular person, but here's a YouTube conversation that I think sums up the inanity of it all:

User X: These cutscenes being so awesome makes me hate blizzard more for cancelling the pve.

User Y: It's not cancelled...this person is playing the pve...in game

By the standards of this thread, User Y is splitting hairs with User X, by simply pointing out that User X is factually wrong.

If someone is miffed about Hero Missions being cancelled, fine, that's their business, but to claim that PVE is cancelled because of one component being cancelled is either idiocy or deceit, especially at this point with PVE having been released. Those are the only two options. Cliche as this phrase is, "you're entitled to your opinions, you're not entitled to your facts."

This isn't even the only case of it. Even now, people are still claiming that Halo Infinite's DLC was cancelled, despite it being repeatedly confirmed that it never existed. How one feels about that is up to them, stating that "DLC was cancelled" is an outright lie.

Personally I just think this is the nature of Online Multiplayer Gaming, especially in the FPS market.

Newer Multiplayer FPS games will come out soon and replace it, I mean Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (2023) is coming out.

But sadly some older games that I would actually like to play online just either are shut down or the community is too small at this point or the popularity is gone

I wanna play Battlefield 2 Multiplayer, but EA pulled the game from stores. I wanna play Halo 2 Multiplayer in the Master Chief Collection, but when I did, couldn't find any matches. And the most active gaming in MCC is people playing these whacky rules like Zombie or Halo 3's player made maps that are not really meant for balanced team death match

Dropped was not the right word maybe ping ponged from what is being describe is closer.

I loved Battleborn because of potential same way people liked the potential of Overwatch world. The story go the job done gave you a threat, gave you some puddies to beat up and Rendain existed did the job and kept it moving. I liked the banter and being able to experiment a little with certain character and have them use abilities that gimped them in PVP or against bots and kick back and relax. Battleborn gave options and did not try to railroad players like taking features out and again ping ponging other ones. Before it dropped it just kept adding and adding. Not all the additions hit but I will take trying to build over playing a game of jenga with mixed results. Plus getting certain characters lore was easier to do with the PVE content which helped fleshed them and the world out better and that would of stress in a pure PVP environment. Nothing has to be perfect Battleborn is not everyones cup of tea but damn it I put my hours in and it gave me good time. I had a good time with Overwatch don't get me wrong but unless I was with buddies online I would probably would not touch as much compared to Battleborn which gave me fun time with buddies and when solo.

Hero missions had rpg elements with skill trees and upgrade paths. That was the PvE that people were excited for, and supposedly required a rebuild of the engine. It was also the only new thing OW2 was bringing to the table, events and little story missions against bots existed in the original.

So when people say PvE was cancelled, they arent misrepresenting it because some event missions exist.
