Well, how long is your system going to last, and do you expect to need it for other demanding things in the future?

I have prepared for you fine folks the most 1st world problem I have ever created for myself. I'm trying to play Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 on my Samsung G9 which is an ultrawide 5Kx1440p hdr monitor and my RTX 3080 with ultra settings and RT on is only getting 35-40 FPS with a lot of drops below playable.

I can not possibly play this game at anything lower than maximum and am seriously contemplating going to Microcenter here in a second and buying a RTX 4080.

I can easily swing $1k, but its going to be the dumbest financial decision I've made in a long time, especially considering literally only Cyberpunk pushes my RTX 3080. Everything else runs fine at max, but liek ..who knows. maybe spider-man 2 needs this beef?

It's all quite a bother

I'm reading that the 3080 supports DLSS. Have you tried fiddling with that?

I may or may not be getting laid off. I may or may not have been getting laid off for the past 10 months, but now I may or may not be getting laid off even more seriously. My job function is going away, but no one knows when, and also they really like me and want me to stay, but they don't know in what capacity.

Anxiety is fun, but it's extra fun when you find out that you're getting laid off but then don't get any details and every time you ask about when it's going to happen people just shrug and go "idk, but while you wait would you like another bonus? Maybe a promotion?"

Oh, sucks, was in a similar situation some years back, but that was for a short term contract that was extended month by month for about 5 more months, so doesn't really count. Not much fun, though.

Getting the 4080 isn't going to help much I'm afraid. Ray Tracing is just that system intensive that paying that $1000 is probably only going to net you like an extra 10 frames unless you start using DLSS.

GG I’m playing 2077 on a bloody GTX card because fuck the GPU market bs even to this day. Can’t imagine being such a graphics purist that I’d scoff at the suggestion of just using DLSS.

Yeah I was able to get myself to a steady 40fps with some tweaking to RT, sadly I had to turn down RT shadows, not gone just not perfect reflections. DLSS, at least the new cool DLSS, is only available on 40 series *sigh*.

I ultimately deciding buying a 4080 right now is a stupid decision slightly out of my range.

I think everybody has a number. The "I can spend this and not feel remorse". I don't think $1000 is that number for me. For two reasons
  1. like you said the 4080 is not, today, a 4K card if you consider RT and I do because unlike in previous years they've finally got reflections working. Insanely well. You can literally see peoples shadows perfectly, full detailed buildings in pools of water. The immersion is just insane. Alas, at 4k the 4080 is just barely squeaking. For a thousand freaking dollars?
  2. The 4080 is a year old now and it's not "selling like hot cakes". There's confirmed "rumors" that a 4080 super or some sort of refresh is coming. So I HAVE to believe the 4080 has a discount coming.
So with that in mind, I decided I want to at least wait for black friday maybe after christmas. One thing I notice years after years is the "january clearence". Once the big tech push is over theres a Q1 clearence sale. For instance Target literally puts every TV in stock at 50% usually by march.

Yup, GTX1060 here on an 8 year old PC. CP2077 doesn't look great, but it's a perfectly acceptable 50-60FPS on medium settings.

Cyberpunk 2077 was very playable, very smooth and beautiful to look at with my GTX1080. Like the Ray tracing looks awesome on my 3080 but it’s still a nice to have rather than a requirement.

I don't much care for ray tracing, mostly because smooth good feeling movement is more immersive to me than visuals. Reflections and shadows look cool when I'm standing still, but nothing pulls me out of a game faster than touching a mouse or a controller and feeling a game chug at 25 fps. It's one of the reasons I can't stand the Nintendo Switch. I'll take 120fps without RT over 40fps with RT any day of the week and it's not even close.

An addendum to the post a while back with Arnold warning about “raising a generation of wimps” -

Therapist here with a particular niche for working with adolescents and emerging adults (also trained in CBT); Haidt is spot on, a lot of my clients have difficulty navigating conflict, very little coping skills for life's challenges, and do not socialize enough (zero spontaneity with it comes to hanging out with each other; parents have scheduled their childhoods to the max) and struggle with overall independence. The positive however, is that Gen Z is smart, introspective (maybe to a fault), they are open to working on their shortcomings and have a grasp on mental health unlike previous generations.

Okay, I gotta ask. When people say 'Navigating conflict', what the fuck do they actually mean. Most of the young people I've met at work (20-24) don't have much difficulty navigating the kinds of conflict you encounter in the workplace. Or are they talking getting into stupid arguments over things that don't matter with people they don't give a shit about?

I think it's probably the (huge) middle ground between getting into a fist fight in a car park because someone stole 'your' space, and still being angry with yourself 30 years later that you didn't get into a fist fight over a parking space.

I believe it is true that most people do not have these problems as the upcoming generation are not as coddled or psychotic as some might believe.

It’s a dressed up way of saying “dealing with bullshit”.

Maybe it's just that a therapist specialising in adolescents and emerging adults is going to see a lot of adolescents and emerging adults with problems. Have they been practicing long enough to make broad statements about what sort of issues Millennials and GenX had at the same kind of age?

I am an adult and yet every time I need to tie a tie I have to watch a youtube tutorial first. I work in tech, I literally only wear ties to weddings and funerals, and those (thankfully) don't happen often enough for me to develop tie tying muscle memory.

I would be entirely happy to ditch the entire idea of ties in a dumpster that is full of fire, on fire and also in fire. Stupid cloth garrotes.

Use a clip-on. Most won't care to notice, unless you bother to point it out.
