Put it this way: imagine you are Vladimir Putin. Why have your country into a war-ridden, economically stagnant, miserable dump when you could instead trade and work with your neighbours, build schools, encourage modern industry, increase human development, and turn it into a well-developed, richer and happier one? Because the latter would almost certainly involve giving up your job as dictator. Some people would get more of a buzz as slum lord than as a mediocrity with comfortable, middle class job.

Nor does someone playing the escapist fiction have to put up with a lot of the stuff that a real world would have: they don't have to really experience swords in the guts, cut ligaments, dysentary, tetanus, lice, ticks, ill-fitting clothing, boots with holes in, hunger, thin gruel and stale bread, exhaustion, maiming and death etc. It's all just numbers on a screen and imagination, with a sense of satisfaction at the end that they achieved tasks and won.

That is a fair point. I was thinking of "escapism" in too narrow of a term. Basically, rather than thinking in terms of just putting reality on hold for a little bit and getting lost in a story or setting, I was thinking of it as "I want to be there rather than here". Which is not really what escapism is, so that was on me.

Yeah, because everyone was looking forward to the umpteenth Assassin's Creed after the franchise had lost nearly all its credibility, some random Bat family game, and a live-service game that's been 8 years in development from a studio previously lauded for their singleplayer output. It wasn't until Sweet Baby Inc. got involved that these games became bad obviously.

Ah yes, I remember on TikTok when almost every woman on there randomly blamed Incels for some guy punching a woman for no fucking reason, but it then turns out it was an extroverted African American wannabe politico who had run for the freedom party with a large rap sheet. News flash generally introverted incels are loners in the suburbs of some city that won't go into the city, haven't run for office, and don't have the self-confidence to annoy random strangers in a large city unless you were counting that one guy who insulted women then pepper spray them back when they started swinging back at him.

In reality, the reason Americans hate incels is for multiple reasons. One they are mostly white or Asian so it's not racist since those people are white adjacent or are white. Two they are often males who dominate power positions in society even though if you have power and or are married you are not an incel, incles are people with little power and no girlfriends and are often NEETs(Not in education employment, or training). Two is because a minority of them commit mass shooters when in reality you're more likely to be shot by someone you know like a spouse.

And no I refuse to conflate incels with misogynists. No, the South Korean president doesn't count he's just a conservative misogynist. Incels cannot just be anyone liberal women don't like in which case 50% of the US population votes Republican so they are all incels?

Incels are an online community. Participating in that online community and buying into its conventions makes you an incel. There are certainly people who are drawn to incel communities because of genuine feelings of isolation or alienation, but a far bigger contributor is actually having a very distorted view of sex and relationships. Incels tend to be involved or formerly involved in red pill or PUA communities, they tend to see the world as divided between a small number of desirable people and a large number of ordinary people. Often , they aren't interested in getting a girlfriend because they simply do not place any value on most women outside of a small minority whom they consider desirable. They tend to be very average guys who are mad that they can't live the kinds of exaggerated fantasy sex lives they believe "alphas" possess.

The number they'll usually give is around 30/70.

It is an offshoot of the whole red pill ideology where the world is divided into alphas and betas. Like most of the red pill spectrum, incels generally believe that women only experience sexual desire towards a small minority of men and only engage in sex or relationships with men outside of this group in order to exploit them financially and emotionally. Thus, equitable relationships with women are impossible. Incels are not necessarily virgins, some incels are even quite conventionally attractive and have certainly gotten attention from women, but they do not value these experiences or pursue them. Conversely, they often fetishize relationships with people who can be exploited or controlled, such as underage girls.

Essentially, incels and the red pill ideology in general are attractive to people who buy into a fantasy of having power over women. They believe that some men actually have this power, that the kinds of weird maledom fantasy scenarios which are sold to men through porn and other media are actually real representations of the lives of a small minority of attractive men. While they do often have genuine problems, the fundamental problem is that they consistently compare their own lives to the fantasy lives they believe other men are living. So yeah, I guess it is like the 1% thing in that it's the politics of jealousy and grievance, but the 1% actually exist. "Alphas" don't.

I'm not sure incels are necessarily right wing, although I don't doubt they have a substantial amount of right-leaning ideology. A lot of people operate in a political space that may be relatively hard to classify; typically for instance they could be quite economically left-leaning but socially very conservative/reactionary, and some are just broadly apolitical.
