Survival horror is doing great in the indie and AA sector. Be they Japanese or Western. Though Western portion is going really great on that end.
That goes back to my point. That RE1 knockoff doesn't cost 150 million dollars to make. Publishers are greatly overestimating their potential audience.

That's pretty much what I said to CriticalGaming at the beginning. Massive over budgets and pleasing the never satisfied investors, but he wasn't paying attention.

Tried Black Flag years ago. Was unplayable. Assassin's Creed has too much automation and too many systems and screens. It wants to do everything and masters nothing. Story's bland too. Overproduced trash.
Which is weird because isn't Black Flag like one of the best received AC games?

I didn't read it. My follow-up post was prompted by Hades' post. I was saying that it would be foolish to go back to that era because it will bring us back to where we are now.

The weird mix of toon and busy realism of the Arkham series (that shifted more to bland PHOTOrealism in Arkham Knight) is ugly anyway. The character designs are shit. If WB had confidence in eighty years of stylized comic Batman, they would move away from that. Problem is that video game designers aren't limited like comic artists and cartoonists. They don't have to think about how to keep the design minimalist and easier to draw again and again. They get carried away because they only have to model and texture the character once. But that simplicity makes the designs more visually striking.

Also don't know if the Arkham combat system, which is a one button system, would fly anymore in this era of Souls imitators. You can add enemies that require different moves on top of that, but at the core it's still a one button system, therefore lame.

Polygon mad that a good game "Black Myth Wukong" got a Nomination but Dragonage, a bad bad game, did not.
*shocked Pikachu face*

Funny thing about the article is that it mentions things the Bioware is typically good at, but fails to acknowledge or justify whether Dragonage still holds those standards. They just seemed completely ignorant of reality.
I think you mischaracterized the perspective of the article. It said nowhere whether Dragon Age was deserving of a nomination, it merely expressed surprise that it did not land with the TGA. As the final line of the article itself said: "In the end, though, there’s not much in this set of nominees to ruffle any feathers — outside of BioWare’s offices, that is.".

Other than spider man, Most games have stopped doing that. It's either Souls or DMC style for most 3d games.

Foolish to them because it's always go big or go home. WB can do it at any time. They're just pathetic bitches who don't even know what they want. Even when they get it, they still complain and wine like they lost everything. All they're focusing now is on Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, and Batman. They made a mission statement. They want to kill themselves that badly? Have fun WB, I'm not getting involved. They have learned absolutely nothing.

I mean you don't call it a "snub" if you don't think it was robbed or "snubbed" of a nomination.

Why call it "striking" if you didn't expect it to be there in the first place?

i think the article itself is mischaracterizing itself, because tonally it's not consistent with it's own premise. Then again....clickbait is clickbait.

Dude you're overthinking an overreacting on this. I don't like Polygon either, but most people don't even care about them anymore. You're really only giving them the energy and the clicks, so that's all on you. You should have just ignored them and moved on.

I think they meant "snubbed" as in "Huh, I expected this to appeal to the jury. Curious.". That's the way I've seen it used in discussions about alleged Oscar snubs.

They addressed why it is striking: they've had earlier entries win and it seemed engineered do well at the awards.

Whether using "snub" potentially erroneously is clickbait or not I don't have the energy to discuss but I prefer to think the best of people and think that was the word used because headlines need to get the point quickly.

The Polygon used a clickbait-y titled to express a pretty innocuous point. I admit I was also surprised to see DA:V not nominated for anything except accessibility, but I'm also can't make a serious argument for why it "deserves" to be other than I think almost anything would be better than a freakin' DLC and continuing to blow smoke up Elden Ring's ass.

This article is mad at the wrong thing. It should be mad at the one thing that Veilguard did get nominated for, which is accessibility, which plays into the joke of it being the first game designed for people with short term memory loss.

I've heard it said there's a slight anti Japanese/eastern game bias when it comes to handing out game awards, but this year they don't seem to have a choice. Its almost a complete eastern game industry sweep with barely a western game to be found. And while we shouldn't put that much stock in the game awards I still wonder if its not a sign of the western industry's deep decline.

Perhaps the western game industry is now going through a similar phase to what the Japanese game industry went with during the 360/ps3 era. Back in those days the marketing strategies of the Japanese companies wasn't working anymore, the devs had lost confidence and were counter productively abandoning what they were good at to appeal to the west. Generally that part of the industry was seen as a laughing stock rather than a measure of quality. This to the extend it was apparently a bit traumatic for Japanese game developers. Its no coincidence that some of Japan's most controversial and worst games came from this era.

But now its the western industry that's in a complete rut. Their marketing strategies aren't working, they're counter productively abandoning what they are good at and rather than being seen as a mark of quality a western AAA game now invites distrust, mockery and skepticism.

Its not even that the market changed and that the companies on both sides of the isle weren't able to keep up either. Back at the time Japanese companies tried westernizing so hard there was still great demand for the games they used to make, the market just wasn't making those games. Same with the western industry. There is still high demand for quality single player games and when they release they tend to succeed. A real sequel to Black Flag or the Arkam games would have been met with great applause, but devs seem all but forbidden from making those games anymore.
This sort of thing is more of a relic of the past, in like the mid-early 90s you'd see some of the most dismissive and incoherent reviews for Jrpgs from people who never attempted to comprehend them. Even in the mid 2000s something like Dragon Quest VIII still was highly praised, so I think we've been out of those woods for a while now and those old types of biased people have been made almost utterly irrelevant.

The one area where they aren't fully irrelevant is, sadly, award shows and the like, so this is the one instance where that old tendency rears its ugly head again.

Nowadays the modern variant of anti-japanese bias is in the types of adult expression endorsed. Something like Cyberpunk can have full vag on display on ps5 but an anime game has to censor panties into shadows of the void, and both games are rated M (cero D in japan) so it's not a "think about the kids" thing. And typically it used to be the exact opposite, where animation used to be able to depict harder types of content than live action/realistic stuff would. Like nowadays we somehow treat drawings as more real than real-looking people which is incoherent. That sort of thing is where the modern focus should be.

Ok, let's just go over these points.
1. Sure, whatever, but TGA exists because of Keighley. If not him championing the event, who will? Stuttering Craig? Mark Kern?
2. I don't think any of these are actually good enough, but sure, fine. Surprised to see Zelda, cuz you play a woman who doesn't flaunt her tits and takes the role of a man.
3. Tell me you were a horny teenage boy in the 00s without telling me. But even aside from that, explain to me why booth babes are pivotal to gaming.
4. Kind of agree. It's a video game event. Bring in video game people. So no people with no involvement in the industry. See also point 3.
5. If you want 00s era E3 again, just say that

Yorch is an asshole who rarely has any points (they're almost always incidental or something the average person can figure out on their own). Funny enough Yorch always want either sexy girls, sex scenes in games, or both. The fucker wants 2000s E3 era (never coming back) and the SpikeTV era Game Awards (most definitely not coming back and no one sane wants that travesty again).

MattTGM called out Yorch recently with his GoW Rag "takes".

Fyi, 68 yo
Were you referring to him or yourself on age?

Him. Or at least, he claims to be.
