So for boring and stupid reasons I felt the need to buy a second hand laptop. It was a Lenovo P50 workstation, cost $500 and was specced thus:

Intel i7 6820HQ 2.70GHz
32GB RAM
512GB SSD
Quadro M400 4GB
15.6" FHD
Win 10

There’s also a spinning rust disk in there but as soon as I’ve used for its main purpose I’m ripping it out and putting my old 2TB 2.5 inch SSD in its place.

And as I pondered what to do with it afterwards - I was planning a Linux test bench - I checked my wife’s laptop. And despite her CPU being a generation newer, this thing kicks its arse in every possible way. The CPU is a quad core as opposed to a dual core, it’s got four times as much RAM, double the main storage space and a proper 1080p screen. I was fucking stunned.

So guess who’s getting a new(ish) laptop?
You sure about that CPU? A gen 6 I7? I think Intel is on gen 14? The rest of your specs sound a lot newer.

I'm very positive, since I've booted the machine up and all that. These things are ex-workstation replacement units. Presumably for design work, hence the Quadro cards. They're just ridiculously overspecced.

I bought a 32 inch 1080p television and a special mounting bracket so I can play DragonAge II. Yeah, I spent like $300 bucks on a set-up so I can play a PS3 game xD

Lone Wolf and Cub, Omnibus 1 and 2. Manga that ran from 1970 to '76.

I was worried about the size. I guess it's fine. You get used to it. Still would have liked them much bigger than 5 x 7 inches, in the original 28 volume format instead of twelve fat books.

Watched the Criterion Blu-rays a few years ago.

The main reason why this is taking so long is because of the intricate details and patterns. Monotonous as hell, but holy shit did they nailed all of that. Probably finishing it tomorrow or the day after.

That fire in 2019 hurt me, because i always wanted to go. Apparently they are re-opening soon, though

I got this beta for only about $4. I paid too much!

It sends me a code by email that takes so long to get to me it is expired by the time I try to enter it. I think that is for online only as I can then try to start the campaign. It is so herky jerky even at low visual settings it is unplayable.

I figure I'll leave it installed to see if coming updates fixes it.

A new laptop bag. My old one is kinda run down, and also too large to be taken onto an airplane as a personal item in addition to my carry-on luggage.

Forgot to update on the build. I finished it the next day after the photos

It took me around 22 hours to finish, but holy shit is it beautiful! The symmetry and tiny details are fucking amazing

Fathers and Sons, by Ivan Turgenev.

A lemon-scented bar of soap in the form of a spiral.

Two margaritas.

A videogame called Flynn: Son of Crimson.

Two tickets for Coup de Chance.

A fern.

A new shower head.

One of those already cooked chickens and a few sandwiches and salads for my family on my way home from work yesterday.

Out of power since windy rain Tuesday night. Peak was about 600,000 people. Downed power lines in many places. Can't place them underground because American cities are too spread out, thanks to cars. I've experienced one earthquake (which might disrupt underground electricals/cables) in my life, but can't count the number of outages caused by weather.

It came back for ten minutes around 8 PM yesterday. I was so happy, because, leaving early and coming home late, I had not seen the apartment fully illuminated since Tuesday.

Turned on my UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and PC before the power went out again. I didn't turn off the UPS this time (since it can't turn on without a brief external charge), but instead put it in the washing machine with our devices, so that we wouldn't have to hear the loud beep-beep as the battery drained.

It's early morning. Hope I can take a hot bath soon.

Edit: 7 in the morning. Still out. Getting a cold. Maybe in two hours I can read my manga without using my phone's light.

My dad's computer is slowly dying and I'm tired of fixing it, so I went to Microcenter and bought him a new one.

This is what I got:

PowerSpec B735
  • AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7745 (3.8GHz) Processor
  • 32GB DDR5-4800 RAM
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • Gigabit LAN, WiFi 5 (802.11ac), Bluetooth 5.0
  • Windows 11 Pro
Not the prettiest thing in the world, but transplanting it into another case down the line will be easy enough if it's something he wants to do. I doubt he will though, It's a workstation and he doesn't game.

It's pretty overkill for his use case. He now has a better processor and more ram and storage than I do, so I guess upgrading my own machine is next. I could use a new processor and graphics card.

I've still got a Ryzen 3600x and an AMD 5700XT, so thinking I'll upgrade to something like a Ryzen 5800X3D (no need for a new mobo and it's like $150 for a pretty decent performance uplift), and maybe a 4070. I'll see what's on black friday and cyber monday sales. I'll also grab the ram out of his old PC and slap it into mine to upgrade from 16 to 32 gigs of ram, since I'm still using DDR4.

Bought Formula 1 2024 for my Xbox. Got it on sale. I don’t expect to be good or even competent at it as my experiences with most racing sims have been epic failures, but it’s "more Formula 1" to occupy myself as the ’24 season winds to a close with this weekend’s penultimate race in Qatar. Also, my family came in town for the holiday, and my dad is also an F1 fan, so we can tinker with it and laugh at each other.

My copy of Nobunagun came in today. I know it's an anime from a decade ago, but I never got around to getting into it, even though the show is only 13 episodes. I am here for the over-the-top and crazy action. I'll start watching tonight.
