The pretext was something to do with retaining classified records. Thus this is not just about punishing a critic (because assuredly it is), but the justification is also relevant because retention of records was one of the major legal actions taken against Trump.
It's kind of small beans, in a way.
But surely we have to understand the difference between someone having a few documents accidentally lying around, and someone having boxes and boxes of them, deliberately refusing to comply with requests to return them, and obstrucing agents when they eventually come to get them. Never mind convincing evidence that some of these documents were being waved in front of people without clearance even whilst the ex-president said they shouldn't see it. It's that open flouting of the law that is perhaps more serious.
And the answer to that open flouting of the law was the permissiveness of the state and judiciary, even if through incompetence and bias.
No that's what I mean. All those fucking files at Mar-a-Lago. Boxes of them. If I'd done that with official Australian government documents I'd have an AFP tactical team kicking my door and my teeth in, in very short fucking order.
