Finished up Hades 2, although rather annoyingly literally just before the "hey we've changed the ending!" update.

Playing some more Overwatch 2 as per usual.

Now looking for a new singleplayer game to have on the backburner after Hades. I dipped my toes back into Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, but I've got to say, this game is just the unfunniest shit. And the shooting doesn't even feel very good. I might ditch this one, im really not in the mood for however long this is supposed to be, at the moment.

I picked up Dispatch, i'll give that one a whirl.
Question for you, o anyone who's played both Hades..es.

I liked first Hades but I got really frustrated with the Minotaur + Theseus boss fight. I already don't like roguelikes and it took my love of Supergiant to allow me to push through that aspect of the game but that fight was such a slog that by the third time I was ready to quit and just pushed myself until I was able to finally beat the titular character (only one time, f*** that whole 10x true ending nonsense).

Is there a similar hurdle in Hades 2?

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance

Shinobi was one of the great quarters eater arcades games of my youth and I didn't know the name was even still around though I should have expected as much, since no video game IP truly dies.

Well this new one is a 2D retro action platformer metroidvania. Yep, so, like, your standard video-game-ass-video-game.

It's a good bit of fun- it just works. No jank-ass slowdowns in performance, so far no nonsensical puzzle levels (I'm halfway through), and a series of controls that you will know if you've ever played a similar game. It's easy to string together sick combos. The game caters to both kinds of players- casuals like me who just want to get through the levels (at least so far) and those for whom the phrase "skill ceiling" means something.

I'm playing it on the Switch 2 as my "something to do instead of chore or work while wife is using living room" game.

Yes, but I found in Hades 2 it feels easier once you beat them to beat them again. It feels like you have more tools at your disposal to ease up a run. Thought if you don't get the right god powers or just screw up, you will still be screwed, half the fun of it.

If you were powering trough 1, there's no reason to pick up 2. Its extremely similar to 1, just not quite as good (especially story/character).

Not sure what you dislike the most about that fight, but the 2nd boss fight is also against multiple opponent at once if that was it.

And speaking of obsessed with epic games...

I'm done with Persona 5: Royal.

Whew, what a ride! Though I was getting worn down at the end, it picked up as I finally got to dig into the meat of the "royal" stuff with the for-real-last palace, boss, and story, and I was back into it. I thought they brought the story, theme, and character bits home. Of course it being an extra from the original killed the pacing by relegating the great characters from the base game to useless in favor of the new characters. But the connection between the villain, the story, the themes, and main character paid off enough to make me glad I stuck with it. It all came home in a way to make it feel like part of the whole story.

Definitely a game that will stick with me for a while, even though I didn't enjoy all the 170 hours I had with it. And while I certainly need a break from another game like this, at least I have a new genre I can go back to.
What, not going to immediately dive into P3 now? It's only around 100 hours, just a short jaunt in comparison.

How do you feel the game compared to P4 overall playing them back to back?

I finally got around to, and finished, the singleplayer of Space Marine 2. I gotta say, it's very rare for games to impress me with their technical prowess these days anymore, but Space Marine 2 genuinely manages it with its vistas of devastation, but more importantly, swarms of Tyranids. It genuinely feels like you're fighting an avalanche of thousands, and like it could not have been done on any previous-gen hardware. So props for that. The game in general is a big step up from the first. Though still about on par in complexity with the first, the addition of a parry mechanic brings a surprising amount of satisfaction into the combat. It's definitely pretty easy on Normal once you get into grips with it, so I ended up turning the difficulty up to Hard towards the end. There's a lot more visual and setpiece variety, and it's a lot more vibrant and colourful. Even the story manages to hit some pretty interesting notes, though it kind of ditches them by the end for a good old baddies vs goodies blowout. But you can't really expect more out of this franchise.

The singleplayer may be brief, but the way it incorporates co-op missions is quite ingenious. You basically have two campaigns running in parallel, and affecting each other's stories where a squad will head out in multiplayer for a mission, and that objective will in turn be referenced in a singleplayer mission. And these aren't half-assed filler either: the multiplayer missions include unique enemies, environments and even boss fights. It not only creates variety if you switch between the missions, but it also creates a much wider sense of scale on a personal level. Titus and his squad don't feel like the center of the universe, but merely a part of a larger whole.

In fact the singleplayer almost feels like a tutorial to the multiplayer: there you get the customization, the upgrades and other progression systems. I haven't even played it that much yet, but I might for a good while.

In some ways the single player is lesser to the coop. You mentioned extra enemies, but it also has the customizable weapons and classes, you miss out on those in single player so you will actually be a bit better in multi.

OG Nemesis was scripted, but in a way that still made you anxious as to when he was going to show up. It could also change depending on where you went first. And the fact that he could follow you through doors was at the time terrifying, since Mr.X you could just run past in the few hallways he showed up in, and when you went through a door he'd despawn. But not Nemesis... He followed you AND he was faster than you. The recurring scare was you fleeing out of whatever alleyway Nemesis appeared in, hearing this theme...

...indicating he was looking for you, running into the next frame (of the prerendered background) and then hearing the door crash open, and seeing him storm into to frame right at you. The OG really used the fixed camera to make this guy scarier, because you could actually see him coming after you, catching up to you. Also, and this may very well be nostalgia speaking, but the guy's original voice just sounded scarier.
OG by all accounts sounds much scarier. I'm pretty sure Nemesis is only ever "let loose" in the remake during that short stretch between powering the subway and going back, and even then he won't go after you in certain rooms (even non save rooms). Everything else is cutscenes and scripted chases leading to boss fights. I don't think the game makes the most of him. Even in cutscenes he comes across as incompetent. And the game robs him of his one STARS kill (Brad), which seems like a wasted opportunity.

So I've played 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, Code Veronica and the remakes of 1, 3 and 4. I'd rank this higher than 6 and maybe 5 but that's about it.

Funny enough, RE3R is still the same length as the original RE3, even with the cut content. I prefer the remake over the original. I do like the original, but the dodge mechanic in it is too finicky and damn near random to work right and consistently. Have fun!
Out of curiosity I checked the averages on HLTB and OG appears to be marginally longer than the remake:

The remake however takes longer to "complete" I guess because of the extra difficulty settings (?) and all the farming you have to do to unlock everything in the shop.
I did have fun with the remake though, and got scared a couple of times, so coming in with 0 expectations I'm not really complaining.

Yeah, for whatever reason (things haven't changed all that much), the Until Dawn remaster is just not clicking for me like the original. Think I'll drop it. Back to Mass Effect 2 LE again, and possibly try out the Silent Hill 2 Remake, because I have no expectations for that due to never having played the original.

ETA: My feelings playing the Until Dawn remaster were best said by a user on a Discord server I'm part of. "A good remake or remaster can stand on its own merits. This just makes me want to go back and play the original."

Speaking as someone else who's never played the original, I've played horror games with better 'game', but none that have better 'horror'. It's a great game and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

OT: Finally finished Ares Island in Sonic Frontiers. Wyvern is a little rough even with the fairly lenient parry timing (it's basically just a block you can counter right after), but after taking a hit you have to release the buttons and hold them again to block the next attack. Which I don't think is necessarily bad design, it's just something that you'll only really learn by taking a hit that you think you would've stopped. Then again, I've played a lot of the Yakuza games and 'Re-Guard' is a common skill in those, so that was how I figured out what I was doing wrong.

On to the third island, Chaos Island, and getting to see the boy again. Though I still have a lot of Ares Island cleanup I could do if I feel like going back to it. We'll see. Not like I'm getting 100% on this file anyway, probably.

Hades 2 is just more of Hades 1. If you found fighting the same boss(es) over and over again frustrating and tedious, I'm afraid that it isn't any better here - though there is a whole second set of zones that you can choose to tackle, instead of the singular route of the first game, which might elleviate some of the tedium for you.

That said, if you aren't really striving to achieve the true ending, then im not really sure Hades is for you, anyway.

The year is winding to an end, and I think I might actually just replay all of the Halo games, which I can quite easily do on my Steam Deck.

I figure with the Halo CE Remake coming out next year, this might actually be my last playthrough of the original until that time.

Otherwise I haven't played all of the other games since before Halo Infinite came out (aside from 2, which I replayed earlier this year).

Yeah, I mean, I like that we get to see Brad zombie, as an homage to the secret in OG RE2 where if you make it to the police station without picking anything up Brad will show up as a zombie in the underpass. But Nemesis being introduced by killing Brad and that immediately leading to fight with him, all right in front of the police station, was just way cooler.

I just felt like it took so long to beat them, much more health spong-y than other fights. Even more so than Hades himself.

hahah, no, so tired...

Overall I'd say I enjoyed P4 but I tend to like the first of something more as that was the one that hooked me (I did try P5 once a while ago and didn't get into it).

P5 has overall higher highs- the baton pass, the graphics and visuals obviously. P4 had the better (all the girls) and worse (Teddy) characters.
I think I dug the small-town setting more of P4, it made it feel more charming and personal.

I'm guessing I'll get to P3 after the holidays.

Ok Pacific Drive was not as easy to just drop for long enough to forget and return to mid-game file as I initially assumed. Some re-education was sorely required, some menu screens had to be carefully studied, and since there were some other quirky additions patched in...some wikis had to be hunted down. But ok, we're back on track, maybe this can be completed after all and then the halloweenie dlc?

Outer Worlds 2
Seems like the kinda game series that feels useless to try talking talking about, people appear to have fermented strong opinions against it since the original release for whatever reasons. Maybe it's just my own broken brain but I can't muster anything passionate on either side of any fence here. Is just alright, not worth breathlessly defending and not worth despising, it'll pass through with ease like an ethereal wind or a cheesy beans on toast

I will say that, IMO, P4 had the worst party members of the 3 overall, thanks to Teddie's...everything and Yosuke's badly aged homophobic jabs.
