I hate to be that guy given how hawkish I am, but Obama was right. Saudi Arabia killed untold numbers of people in Yemen, and Israel killed untold numbers in Gaza, and Iran is killing it's own people because Trump axed the Iran Deal. Had he it, and done a USMCA like deal with it none of the above would have happened. Saudi Arabia may have still fought a war in Yemen but it could be deterred by Iran more, the Houthis may have lost more ground even if the UAE, and Saudis wouldn't bicker against the Sunni government there. Israel may not have gotten one over Iran with the Arab normalization deals, and we could have seen a lessening of tensions in the region.
Again Iran is at fault for killing it's own people, Saudi Arabia did bomb hospitals in Yemen, and Israel is killing killing as many Palestinians as they can. But some of these could have been avoided or lessen. Even in Syria it was better to wait it out, but back the Kurds, and accept the refugees who would have open restaurants in the US, and been fully Americanized in 1-2 generations. Every time the US acts directly in the middle east in modern memory it's lets to blowback. The progressives like Barbara Lee were right. The Iranian protesters are possibly being used by Trump to get a better deal, and unlike Venezuela it's less salient with a important voting block as Iranians are concentrated in LA while Hispanics are more numerous, and spread-out in many swing states.
It's funny I now have a new rule, you don't generally intervene against a region with a former hyperpower, or the sucessor to one. Saudi Arabia, and Iran used to be the center of historical hyperpower militaries.
