So I finished Selaco last weekend. Ending left a lot to be desired, tho since the game is not actually finished yet and there's an entire part 2 to come, I'll let it slide (sic). Aside from that it was a fun and wild ride. Haven't enjoyed fire fights this tense since FEAR, which is obviously what they're going for. I particularly enjoyed the shotgun. Oooh baby, what a shotgun. It looks chunky. It sounds chunky. It makes chunky. And all the secrets, some of which I have no idea how you're supposed to figure them out without a guide. Tho I'm very proud to have found by myself a secret so secret it's not even counted in the tracker, after having found out you can get repeatedly jump and grab on a prop to infinitely climb in mid air HL2 prop climbing style, then used this to get onto rooftops in open air areas. Pretty much pointless, since there's nothing to see. Except in one case, where I found an assault rifle mod and a message from the dev. Anyway, the mod give the AR a secondary fire mode that's basically an infinite ammo version of the Quake 3 BFG10K. Turned it back off since it's ludicrously overpowered and can hose down one of the big miniboss guys in like 2 seconds.

I've also been using the free three months game pass trial I for some reason was entitled to, to basically demo games I was a little bit interested in, but not enough to wanna risk a purchase. So far I've used it to play:

South of Midnight: bit simple yet also kinda janky on the gameplay side, and combat becomes kinda laughably easy with some of the upgrades. But I was invested enough in the plot to wanna see it through to the end. Looks pretty too, and comes with a slick soundtrack. Some nice creature designs, tho I have no idea why the rougarou is a bird monster, the name is derived from the French word for werewolf, but whatever. Fine at the price of free.

Unpacking: you open boxes, and but stuff in its place. That's it. But it makes for a relaxing zen experience that triggers those neurons in your brain that fire whenever a game lets you decorate your in-game house. And it actually has a story, of a young woman in various stages of her life, told entirely through just her things. Had I bought it, wouldn't have regretted it.

Doom The Dark Ages: dropped it after an hour when it became apparent it triples down on Doom Eternal's meter managment & fps rock paper scissors gameplay, except it's now all about the punch and the shield, and the guns feel like an afterthought, only really effective against the lowest fodder. This ain't what I want from Doom.

Err, no. Guns are absolutely the kings of the show. One of my faves fires out a big iron ball that tends to splatter demons nicely. Its way less ridged then Eternal when it comes to fighting your enemies as long as you don't hate the shield. Parrying is a pretty good skill to have, but the melee weapons are more like the hell punch in eternal, nice to have but they are secondary to the guns and I don't really require an enemy needing melee for the most part.

Well, I think I'm almost done with the second area of Monster Hunter Stories 3. The gameplay is still top notch, they give so many more options for roaming around the world, like instead of each monster having a single world ability, now most have multiple, jump, fly, roar, ranged attack, etc. So you can get the drop on an enemy if you want. The story, I don't think the story events are bad, but it needs some snark and sarcasm. Everything is so earnest and naive, it doesn't feel like it fits adult characters. I feel like it just needed some rewrites to really help it out, could keep all the events the same. Like, your character the prince/princess has absolutely no airs about being royalty, like a commoner would walk up to him, ask for something and he would be like, no, your the real prince, but with full honesty. Its a bit grating. Wonder if female would have been better. I'm still open to the story doing something awesome since the other 2 games had great stories, but I would say because of the story, Monster Hunter Stories 3 is so far the weakest of the trilogy for me. Gameplay might be the best, but the other 2 also had really good gameplay.

Decided to replay the very first Resident Evil again. This is I think the fourth or fifth time I've played through it, and I'm definitely finding it easier now than on previous runs despite a couple of dumb deaths to Yawn 1 (not unusual for me). I'm not on the 3-hour infinite rocket launcher pace yet, though. The game is still pretty fun even if some of the tension is alleviated by a stack of 11 ink ribbons and 100+ handgun rounds; still, with what happens when you get back to the mansion after the guardhouse, I expect to feel it rather more in a little bit.

I'm playing as Jill again. I have done Chris's side of the story once, but his more limited inventory space and needing to find single-use small keys (that take up an inventory slot each, in this one) is kinda annoying to deal with. If I end up playing enough of the series to reach the remake, perhaps I'll do Chris's story then.

Chris's gameplay is an inventory-management puzzle game with a side of survival horror.

Chris's gameplay in the original was an inventory-management puzzle game with a side of survival horror. "Good" to see that it carried over.
In the remake, Chris still only has 6 inventory slots, but he starts out carrying the lighter in a special inventory slot like Jill's lockpick. It definitely isn't as good, but being able to clean out dark rooms without having to run back and grab the lighter, as well as burn zombies whenever you feel the need to, is not nothing. And arguably, Jill's increased inventory is balanced out by having to manage all the grenade launcher ammo types in the endgame.

Oh, and I managed to beat the game already. It's quite a bit shorter than I remember it being, though again that's probably the fact that I'm gaining familiarity with it. Should take me a fair bit longer to get through the next few. Final time was 4:08:41, with 13 saves and 8 ink ribbons left over. I probably could do the 3-hour run if I knew the route properly, but that's for another time.

For RE2 I'm going to do Leon A Claire B this time, since I did the 'canon' route the last time.

yeah... horror games are just not for me. Just too much squintng and retrying and forgetting where things are. And it's not scary. Movies and rides are scary, games cannot be, for me at least. Something about the inherent experience of pushing buttons removes the inherent tension of that kind of story telling. Count this genre and Resident Evil as just one of those things that are not for me, after having attempted to get into it with arguably its best representation (other than maybe Silent Hill 2 based purely on reputation).
YEARS ago, my buddy and I who're both sworn cowards when it comes to horror games decided to play Condemned 2 together, swapping the controller back and forth. Since we had the comfort of each other being in the room, we decided to make the environment right: only played it at night, all lights out, and his surround sound cranked up. This particular night, it was my turn, and he decided to do a load of laundry while I played, and his apratment complex's laundromat was directly across the parking lot from his apartment, so he wasn't going to gone but maybe 2-3 minutes. While he was gone, I encountered a creepy doll that walked towards me, fell down, and exploded. The sound of the explosion rattled his living room glass so hard it came loose and crashed to the ground about three feet away from me. All I remember is screaming, jumping off the couch, then tripping over another piece of furniture and falling. When my heart dropped back down into my chest, I saw what had actually happened; I turned on all the lights, lit a cigarette, and sat on the couch shaking. My buddy came in shortly after, saw me a nervous wreck on the couch, he started cracking up... then he saw his window shattered on the floor; wasn't so funny anymore.

So yeah, under the right conditions, videogames can be terrifying.

I remember that stage, but I never had to hit the window when I got scared. I know everybody has their own threshold, but damn...

@NerfedFalcon, i managed to do another 1cc run of Final Vendetta out of the blue last night. It was partially get myself ready for RBX. I was not even planning on a no death run. It just happened.

Right on. I remember playing Silent Hill back in the day and getting to the hell world/school right at like 10:30 at night. Freaked me the fuck out and made it really hard to leave my room and go to the bath room when I needed too. I did it, but it was hard.

I've only managed one Silent Hill in my tenure as a gamer, Silent Hill: Homecoming, and it scared the shit out of me. I actually enjoyed it, though, enough to go through the motions to get the Laser Pistol for a second playthrough where I could dominate all the shit that had given me heart attacks and nightmares during my first playthrough. So yeah, outside of both Condemned 1 & 2, and Homecoming, I can't think of any other horror games I enjoyed, but neither have I tired enough to say there aren't others out there I'd like. I tried Outlast, but I think I only managed maybe a couple of hours; when the tension far outweighed my enjoyment of the game, I quit.

I played the oringal Silent Hill games. But, I tended to judge how much I liked them by how scary I found them. So my 2 faves are the first one and the 3rd one. I know everyone loves 2, but to me I just wasn't scared at all in it, it didn't have creepy flying enemies that would be just out of sight before attacking, it didn't have the merry go round, pyramid head did nothing for me, so I just ended up being disappointed by it. Same with the Room, didn't scare me, it did some really cool stuff, but the ghosts were more annoying then scary.

I cannot tell you how many times I've stopped playing games cuz I'm wondering if my old heart can take it!
Dumbest jump scare that still worked on me: on PC around 1995 was Witchaven. You'd be playing and apropos of nothing at all, you would hear a loud symbol crash as a scary blue face flashed on the screen. It had no purpose at all other than to give you a jump scare.

Robocop: Rogue City on PC

I stopped playing during a fetch quest where I'm trying to get people to sign a get well card. One of them is in the shower and asks me to go fetch his yellow towel. I kid you not. I just wanna shoot bad guys!!! Just gotta skip this obvious side quest BS.

So apparently, the dogs in RE2 take about nine handgun rounds each to put down, compared to four or five in the first game. I'd completely forgotten about that, which is how I ended up dying the first time - and losing a fair bit of progress because I'm trying to limit saving to get a good rank. At least I have the route back up to that point worked out, as well as "it's worth clearing the dogs out of that tiny corridor". And the healing item grading is a lot less strict than in 3, only covering First Aid Sprays and not green herbs or mixed herbs. Next time I should have it handled.

You might like Unfinished Business more then the base game then. It still has some, but much more of it is just shooting.

I just finished Rushing Beat X. It's a fun game, and the best in the whole franchise, but it still has some growing pains and issues like its predecessors. It has that Rushing Beat jank. The characters are all fun, and have a wide variety of moves, but certain characters are either more fun or better than the others. My main issue with the game is that the bosses are just okay or frustrating. Bosses tend to have way too much health at times, and the same goes for some enemies. Hit detection mostly work, but there are moments where I swear I am close to the enemy and my punches or attacks will sometimes miss. It didn't too often, but it happens way more than something you would rarely see in games like The TakeOver, Streets of Rage 4, or Double Dragon Gaiden. Certain enemy types can be cheap too. Mainly the wrestler and robot enemy types. They will sometimes grab you out of now where, and you can't break out of it. Why do certain brawlers still do this, when games like SOR4 and Shredder's Revenge solved this issue?

If you're into Rushing Beat lore, then this game's story is a fun doozy. You're not supposed to take it too seriously, but it's a game made by fans, and clearly for the fans. It has references tying back mainly to the first two games, but it's not just memberberries. Keep in mind, RBX is a prequel. It takes place after the first two games, but before the final entry in the franchise, Shura. I did enjoy it, but I probably be sticking with Free Mode to just play the game. There are some nice details as each character has their own unique dialogue when encountering bosses or story events.

The game has 9 stages total. The last two tend to drag little, but more the final stage. Thankfully, it's not that long. I will say the look of the game has been improved, and getting used to the art style and heavy ink shading. Almost reminds me of Viewtiful Joe a little.

As far as ranking this game goes, it might be a little too early for me to decide, but the game sits around between a 6-7/10. It's a decent time, and you'll have fun, but expect certain issues to grind your gears and frustrate you. The good thing is the game seems to give you unlimited continues on Normal at least. I don't know about Hard or Shura Mode, but I honestly don't want to play this on the harder difficulties. Not worth it, and there's no extra/secret ending for doing as far as I know. It's almost as if this was done to counterbalance the cheap difficulty.

Whoever you play as gets their own epilogue after beating the game. As far as 2.5D brawlers go, RBX is not better than Double Dragon Neon nor even Double Dragon Revive, but better than Demolish Fist. Not the biggest milestone to accomplish as there are other brawlers that already do that, but whatever.

Having gotten the unlocks on Slay the Spire 2, I'm less focused on that game now, so I'm back to Spider-Man 2. Not gonna lie, not sure how much longer I'll be playing it, though. It's not the story, which I'm not minding or outright enjoying at times, and the sidequests are fine. My biggest issue is that parrying is becoming more and more necessary, and it just doesn't feel natural to be REQUIRED in this style of combat, so it makes a key aspect of the game feel off to me in a way that can't really be worked around other than just dealing with it, and I'm not sure how much I want to.

Resident Evil 2 Leon A completed. Final results: 2:32:44 time, 2 saves, 0 First Aid Sprays used, Rank A. Not saving much slowed me down a little bit with a couple of deaths, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. Played more than a few old and occasionally frustrating games (and some new and frustrating ones too).

A lot more weird spelling and grammatical errors than I remember, like 'Platform elevater', but as I said a while ago, the story isn't really what we're here for compared to the action of running past or blasting zombies, dogs, Lickers or whatever else, and that at least holds up pretty well. Still gotta finish Claire B and at least take a stab at 4th Survivor before moving on to the next, though.
