Concept-wise, I am intrigued. Journey to the west and the story of Wukong was also a well-known Chinese myth in Korea as well, and I remember having a blast reading it. Some of his abilities, the characters, and the locations are kinda recognizable.

Gameplay-wise.... It looks like thousands of other games that I've ever played so far. I guess its impressive for a indie studio to build a game like this, but it looks like the gameplay took bits and pieces frm every popular games ever existed.

If you look at the comment section of this video, people are generally pleased or hyped for this game, and I really don't get it; Is it the story and the setting? Because this could change due to the gameplay being in pre-alpha. Is it the gameplay? Because it looks like a mash up of Dark Souls, Arkham series, and every other beat-em up adventure game that I've ever played. Also, there's no release window (at least from what I could tell), no info on platform availability, and no info on the price.

IDK, I kinda feel people are hyping up this game way more than it deserves

I'm of the opinion that there is no good hype, but I'd say that the game shows promise.

The combat system seems fluid enough and the idea of a varied range of abilities is intriguing, and it does look fairly nice, though I'd probably want some more brighter more colourful locations, especially since I'm coming off Ghost of Tsushima.

How is this game hyped. I literally have never heard of it before today. From what i read it is another wannabe Dark Souls. it sure looks pretty, but Dark Souls games are all about how they feel to play, so.....i dunno.

Also i heard something about this thing being in developmental hell and might never actually come out. But i dunno if there is any truth to that.

Yeah it's a bit weird, I'd say there were some bots/marketing at work but that would be strange for a game that's not very far in production. It sounds like there's a small number of people who are going everywhere posting the video. Tin fold hat time, maybe it's because it's a chinese game so there's a nationalist aspect to it.

Otherwise, it's cool that the annoucement trailer actually has gameplay in it and the graphic looks goods. But I don't see any reason for it to generate that much traphic. I'm guessing it'll all disappear tomorrow.

I mean its paid hype, probably with a bunch of bots behind it to try to revamp the image of a Chinese based game as something other than the Chinese government's way to getting your data

Looks good to me. First I ever heard of this game. Looks like the Chinese equivalent of Ninja Gaiden, Sekiro, and Ni-Oh. Definitely not a bad thing. There is even a stance system. It's nice to see a proper Journey to the West game adaption that is good and not another "inspired by". I wish they provided some English subs though. Color me interested. I see nothing wrong here.

Looks interesting, sadly it does seem to be a Souls clone, which means I probably won't like it.

I would have preffered a DMC/Ninja Gaiden type action game too.
At one point it felt like it might be emulating the Spiderman/Batman combat system, during that first big melee scene. But no, more just dive rolling to avoid and then smacking until he triggered Wolf of Monkey mode

It looks decently fun from the video. The combat looks intriguing with the amount of different abilities the character has though it also looks like the main character is OPed because of them as well (which can work). The level design seems generic but I guess linear forested areas look pretty generic by default, at least it's not open world... The wide range of creatures looks pretty interesting. That boss fight was so a Tobi-Kadachi from Monster Hunter. I don't really get the Dark Souls comparisons, there's a stamina bar there but it seems like kinda pointless as the moves take very little stamina unless it's main purpose is for stuff like climbing (environment or large creatures) or tied to how long you can stay in those forms or something.

Never been a fan of Journey to the West but it looks fun. Souls-like, but seems a bit more forgiving. Typical suspicions of anything coming out of China notwithstanding, colour me interested, except for the subtitles. Simplified Chinese is offensive to my eyes. -_-

I keep hoping one day they’ll make a video game of the show Monkey, with the shitty old dub style way of talking and all.

For an early build it's cool enough. I love the bit at the end with the stretching nyoibo. I am a little worried about the corridor-like design of the world though. Maybe this game is going more for a dmc thing as opposed to a sekiro thing.

Either way, I'm just glad to see China making things other than crap phone games.

It’s a shame their government’s shadow has to loom large over everything about them now, especially in the new COVID world they’ve given us. Idk, before all this the game probably would’ve been on my radar to at least try, but now I’m so fatigued and off-put by that country in general. I suppose most the crap we buy is from there though, so more power to them for making games too. Even better if their government implodes by some miracle.

Hey man, imagine being a game dev in china, they're prolly much more sick of their government than we can imagine. At least we can praise em when they do something good.

Who knows, maybe those talented indie devs can be poached over and go to Japan or something and get more work.

I mean, it looks cool enough. The transforming seems neat. Everything seems pretty fluid. The main kind of "eh..." is that there didn't seem to be any sense of impact on anything that wasn't cannon fodder, the stick hits them but theres no reaction (probably whats giving people the Souls vibe, although I'd say even Souls minimal impact was slightly more noticeable).

So yeah, there's nothing beyond the transforming (And that depends how well integrated it is, is it a fluid constant mechanic or just an "Ult" or phase change in the fights) to really stand out from your DMCs and etc beyond the setting. That said, there's nothing wrong with DMC and its various associates, so you'd expect fans to be fairly on board with a similar game unless its a blatant ripoff.

I saw Max's reaction on Twitch last night and he is impressed. Can't blame him.

There seems to be a bit of celebrating a new dev throwing their hat into the ring. And it might herald more games from China at this sort of AAA quality. While I can dislike China for all sorts of reasons, I have no beef with any game devs from there entering the fray.

I kinda grew up on Journey to the West stuff - TV shows, comics and stuff. I never liked the Japanese(or just Gensomaden Saiyuki in particular) take on it since it more or less blatantly disregards the original fluff. While I haven't played Enslaved, I think it is obvious enough just how much of the original story it follows.

This is one of the more fluff accurate representations of Wukong I've seen, blowing hairs to clone himself and stuff like that. I think the devs said something about implementing all of his 72 transformations? I can't imagine that being well implemented at all but I think it would be a nice fluff touch even if majority of them end up being contextual, redundant or useless.
