With MAS back in power, I fully expect Bolivia to return to complaining about its status as a landlocked nation and how Chile needs to negotiate with them over sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean.

I was nice getting a break from that, I won't lie.

A nice meme is that the Bolivian state officially has a navy, and it's stationed in a big lake between it and Peru. Apparently the navy is a reminder to the bit of coast they once had, and a hope that they could once again roam the open sea.
The flag is a fucking riot.

Man, you just never quit.

A man basically tried to become dictator, people protested, he resigned, an interim government took control long enough to have elections which happened to include dealing with a global pandemic, the election happened, and power is peaceably being handed to the winning party that didn't run the same guy again like they did last time in violation of the law, and you're still complaining about a fascist coup?

Here's my take: you've been wrong about this the whole time. People like you put blood in the streets of Bolivia for no freaking reason.

This isn't even a matter of socialism being good or bad. This is a "despotism is bad" issue. Socialists are welcome to try and retain political power in Bolivia, but it can't be by crowning that one guy King, because we know how that goes every time. Socialists in Bolivia (with one exception) are better off now having power generally within their party than they would be with Morales singularly in charge.

People are out there for a year to force the “interim” government to stand by their word and actually hold the election, they keep delaying shit to the point a general strike has to be held, during this period many MAS leaders are killed or imprisoned, and there are people who want to portray this not as MAS and the indigenous people of Bolivia defending their country from a coup but instead as the ideal spirit of democracy returning to Bolivia. Liberals are disgusting.

He won an election. The military then did a coup d'etat and handed power to a christofascist who killed a bunch of people. And then his party won the next election by even more.
"non-elected conservative government"
So an installed fascist regime?

I'm pretty sure when the man miles ahead in a democratic election is pressured out by the heads of the army and the police, and when the next two in the line of succession (both from his party) are also forced out by threats, it's better called a coup.

I’ll also throw out, I don’t even like Evo much. He clearly was wrong in his assumption he was some essential figure to his movement. The movement is much larger than him and operated fine without him helming it directly. He is not some Lula like figure whose unique charisma and political savvy is necessary to keep the pink wave in high tide on his shores (and I’m personally of the mind that not even Lula is that).

That being said, the actions carried out against him were far more anti-Democratic than anything he did. Obviously.

Don't humor these people. He was winning an election he had no place in. He was pressured out by people who didn't want to follow the communist dictatorship plan of government that's killed so many. The election got delayed because of a global pandemic. The people in the streets accomplished nothing but senseless destruction.

I am not great fan of Morales's circumvention of the term limit law by any means... but it was ultimately legal under Bolivia's constitution. At that point, if the people of Bolivia didn't want him, they merely had to vote him out. They didn't.

He was plainly coerced out. And as we can see, once choice was returned to them, the people have returned a successor to him.

The thing is, Morales was not the stereotype of a Latin American leftist tyrant who ruined his country with autocracy and ill-considered policy. By virtually any measure you care to look at he governed Bolivia well, delivering both good economic growth and greatly improved human development. My perceptions is that Bolivia, like many Latin American countries, has an ex-colonial aristocracy, upper-middle class that believes it is their right to rule and to exploit the country. Morales broke their grip and they hate him for it. That he ruled well makes them hate him even more, because in doing so he showed them up for what they had failed to give the people.

This victory for MAS seems like the right thing to have happened. Let's see how the new guy does, and I wish him the same success as his predecessor bar one.
