Scalpers are crying about having a bad public image.

Its always kind of interesting to me how people can do something that 100% is bad for other people and be really surprised that people get pissed off about that. The mental gymnastics are astounding - "we're middlemen providing a service". What fucking service would that be? Wal-Mart is already a garbage middleman but at least they follow recommended price guides from manufacturers.
Yeah, it shouldn't be surprising, in that it happens seemingly every time, but a lot of people genuinely seem to have convinced themselves they aren't obviously totally in the wrong somehow, and it's weird.

I suppose by extension that means we should rethink our own views on ourselves.

Scalpers are what happens when regulations haven't caught up with the market.

TBH, their old persona wasn’t that great
Jim has always been an odd duck, and their personas over the years have been real hit or miss. But I dunno, this new one feels especially garish, to the level of their weird aristocrat character but like...they wear it out, like to the store. Its not a costume anymore, its the way Jim wants to present. And its just not a good look. And I'm all for gender non-conformists identifying how they want, but if you want to be taken seriously and not garner unwanted attention, don't dress like an extra from the Conjuring movies. My first thought when I saw their new look was "Well this is their child molester persona" but turns out its just normal every day Jim, and that just makes it worse.

But how do you regulate scalpers? Its not illegal to buy something and re-sell it. It can be shitty, and I hate the practice, but what laws should be put in place that don't just limit the market or have unintended negative consequences?

Me personally. Limit transactions to 4 Tickets per customer. But then I know that people just bot farm it out and buy all the tickets the second they are released before anyone can enter information into the site. So that probably won’t help

Corporate resellers may not be the best, but they provide many things. Infrastructure, consumer protection, distribution etc.

Scalpers do not. They are not "just like walmart", no matter how loudly they say it.

Jim has a kimi farms thread?
Has had one for a good while (I'm sure people will find it on their own without me linking it) and it was originally shared with TotalBiscuit. Kiwi Farms is where I go when I want to unwind and lose faith in humanity.

I still feel Jim's video was a little lacking on some of the kinda more important bits and just went off on capitalism instead (though not as much as I thought it would).

Some things to note:

There were 20 Million order attempts last time I think it was Walmart received a restock. Sony Expects to sell 16.8-18.5 Million consoles in the whole 2021. So now we know the scale of the problem going on and that was just the USA that 16.8 -18.5 Million is presumably globally which means there's a real focus by bot groups on this and gaming as the latest supposed gold rush and the question of just how long can they keep it going?

Also no mention on why Sony and Microsoft should probably want to stop this. Simply because they want good attachment rates as that helps them make money and they can point to games selling well. You know what doesn't happen with Scalper consoles sitting in warehouses and garages? They don't get people buying games for them so Sony doesn't get licensing money or attract developers more. The way things are going there won't be a console fight this generation until the new Halo games comes out because the Scalpers will control so much of the market people won't have the consoles or won't be able to easily get them so there would be no additional hype etc or talk of the great exclusives.

I am a patient gamer. I was not going to buy the PS5 at launch until official exclusives not named Godfall had dropped. But fuck scalpers they are like greasiest crossover of capitalism and mercantilism and they should know they are greezy at least own up to it.

I am mostly mad cause while I am cool not having a new console at this junction I think of all the kids who missed out on hype console christmas or birthday or people who were really psyched to add one to the collection.

Forced scarity for something already in the 600 dollars range and mark it up may you be subject to eternal prison of nails on a chalk board.

Kiwi Farms? Wuzzat? Welp, never mind, found it, as well as Jim's thread there. I learned about the term 'troon'. Seems like a lovely place.

On topic, I've seen some comment around the webs that this scalping problem is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be, because people aren't stupid enough to buy something off a scalper at jacked up prices. Them's some real big brain critical thinkers right there.

I'll start referring to Jim as a they when I see evidence that this isn't just him trying to be ever more "shocking and sensational" to drive clicks on his content.

At any rate, to the actual topic; we already have pedophiles arguing it's a "sexuality" so I see scalpers trying to justify their actions as rather tame in comparison.

Well you're in luck! Their income is through Patreon, not clicks, and has been brought up many times as a thanks for being able to create content not dependent on "engagement" and clicks and whatnot when some produced content is less viewed. Pluuuuus, they mentioned losing around 4000 subs after presenting as outwardly transitioning on the show for the first time, so it isn't the audience-netter you seem to assume it is.

And how does one get noticed in order to attract people to their pattreon? You have people in this thread talking about how Jim has a history of doing things to be "lul random" or shocking in the past, I'm just following that through that this is just him trying to further his "brand".

Others said in previous Jim threads that he's been losing his passion for the job, is getting worse at his takes outside of industry standards, and that the variety of his content has gone down. Going this route is the kind of action I would expect from someone in such a situation in order to improve self esteem and reinforce his popular image that makes him stand out among other creators like himself that give takes on events or review things.

To be fair to Jim, I don't think this is entirely an act. I think something has fucked him up (likely getting sued by Digital Homicide) that caused him to have some sort of breakdown. Since then he has become ever increasingly bitter towards the games industry but it would actually be more accurate to say that he has become crazed into an anti-capitalism mindset which is coming amongst the progressive and LBGT circles he runs around in.

As a result his content has been consistantly one-note for a while now, harping on the same shit. Even when he did nothing but negative themed videos in the past, the videos would at least have variety to them in terms of targetting Randy Pitchford, EA, Bobby Kotick, whatever. There used to be different focal points to what the topic was about, and now it's just like "All these companies are evil, video games are evil, fuck everyone!" and it's really exaggerated.

The general news reports he used to do are gone, the jimpressions are gone, the OMGHYPE's are gone, his content is almost exclusively Jimquisitons and I for one am no longer a fan which sucks, because I really used to love the Squirty Plays, the Steam Greenlight, and a lot of the content Jim made.

The answer is you build them to order.

Go to a website, place an order, you get a number assigned to you. Once that number gets it's turn, that console is yours no matter what.

I think the only reason this situation is as bad as it is, boils down to the stupid fucking decision to sell "online only". Making it too easy for people to use bots to buy up all the stock.

Sure scalping happens when people can line up in stores or whatever, it's far less impactful because no individual fuckwad can buy up an entire city's worth of stock. At worst some asshole can get ahold of a couple extra systems and that's it.

Online only sales, made it far too easy to wipe out pallets of stock without even trying.

I know one of my local 3rd party video game store basically scalped. Like as a 3rd party distributor they were limited to a certain number of PS5s they could order. So they just had each individual employee order the max and had them shipped to the store. So instead of getting like 10 PS5s, they got 60+.
Now that's not price scalping, at least I don't think, but its certainly taking advantage of online order loopholes.

The videogame industry is not a unique example of the abuses that happen under capitalism. There are no isolated incidents. The rot is systemic, every scandal merely a symptom of the moral torpor capitalism encourages, as a variety of people have been asserting for about two hundred years. EA is evil and they will never be punished because they are behaving in accordance with the capitalist system. There is very little point in criticising the actions of individuals or corporations except as case study because without systemic change they will simply be replaced by something other suitably unpleasant entity. Not that they will ever be under much pressure for their genuinely exploitative practices, because gamers are too busy being upset that women and minorities exist. In such a pervasively unjust system I have the choice of mindless conformity or near impotent protest. I chose protest. Jim, too, chose protest. That is what it is to be left wing; to look at how capitalism drags people down and say "no", as loud as you can, even if nobody listens, because we all have a responsibility to each other and part of that is showing other people the truth.
