Makes sense. She and the turtles are fighting the Foot Clan out in the open. You might even call them street fighters.
I kinda wish they'd use the original comic appearance for April.
Technically this is her first appearance - I know because I have the comic on the shelf behind me - but I can easily see one evolve into the other.

Almost any brawler that takes place in the (then) modern day has characters that are street fighters by default. Which is odd, because not all fights takes place on the streets in Street Fighter.
I rather have Irma or Vern be playable characters! Give me Casey, Usagi Yojimbo, or we all riot!
