I think like many people who do such things, he's probably very self-absorbed. It's a bit like men who suffer some major reverse (e.g. their business collapses) and murder their wife and kids, because those men think they are "saving" their families [from the humiliation they feel]. They really want their families and will profess to love their families, but at some level don't really see their "loved ones" as independent individuals in their own right.
I dunno how much this has to do with covid being blamed on China versus this guy having some very weird sex complexes like the gay Isis guy who shot up a gay bar that he had apparently frequented. Maybe he was just too hooked on spa handjobs and couldn't quit them any other way.
