I think its because the criticism is in our faces. Gamers are much more likely to consume criticism than the readers/viewers etc of those other mediums, and this is because gamers have a loose internet based community centred around websites like this one, which are essentially platforms for...
You know I'm not actually convinced that there are hordes of would be female gamers clamouring at the gates to get in if only there were better representation of their gender in core games.
My perception, and I haven't seen any credible stats that contradict this, is that women are a small...
Also the criticism of the word "gamer" being too broad and something unique to the games industry is just plain wrong, other popular forms of media have exactly analogous single noun words to describer their consumers:
TV = Viewer
Books and newspapers = Readers
Computer games = Gamers...
Well, i'm up to 324 games on steam now, I guess I tend to buy 4-5 games a month but then they tend to be at pretty low prices like £5 to £10 with the occasional higher value purchase like £20 or £30 but never more than that.
To me "Gamer" has always simply meant someone who's main hobby is playing computer games, that they spend a significant chunk of their spare time playing games - that's it, full stop, I don't recognise any of the cultural baggage that others are happy to saddle the word with.
I have self...
You're right that its not necessarily the intention of the creators to bake misogyny into their game but really I think that highlights the point being made, which is that the games industry is perpetuating these retrograde attitudes toward women in an institutional fashion, which is to say it...
I came across this blog post by Elizabeth Edwards (Creative Assembly artist) linked at Rock Paper Shotgun. Warning, there are spoilers.

What do you think? Is Elizabeth correct that Hitman Absolution hates women?
Really...
Come back in 2-3 years and then tell me if you're disappointed. Not patient enough to wait that long for a decent library of games? then you bought in too soon, no one to blame but yourself.
Its not about desperation it's about capitalism, these companies are large publicly listed profit vehicles, their primary and overriding purpose is to generate profit by any legal means. If micro transactions and DLC are commercially viable then that is exactly what they will do, they don't...
Uh god, subscribing to a publisher service. Heaven forfend that I ever sink so low. In fact if it does happen just shoot me because it will be a sure sign of alzheimer's setting in.
I disagree, specific and individual examples of tags can be unhelpful but I think there is a sort of gestalt effect from these community tagging features that when taken with the right perspective is actually very useful. Steam's categorisation and filtering options have long been woefully...
Ok well you're making a different point to what I thought. I have some difficulty with this topic because I only see it myself second hand, I see friends experiencing "gamer's remorse" and I see attempts to disown or sideline gaming in social situations as if there is a stigma attached...
I have a big boner for Wasteland 2, I have the beta installed right now but I'm waiting for it to go gold before playing it. Also anticipating Pillars of eternity, and a million indie games I've read about but aren't out yet whose names I can't remember.
Edit: Oh and Elite Dangerous, really...
