Keep in mind that the original novel is kinda sucky. Not terrible but very Stephen King by-the-books: Main char is a recovering alcoholic, villains that seem threatening from far away but become less and less of an apparent threat the longer the story goes culminating in at the end of the book.

This happens in any type of religious fiction (which Good Omens kinda is and is kinda not). If you ever read the Left Behind series (which you should not do), the characters are all passive observers for what they know is just divine theater.
