I don't feel like anyone did anything wrong here. the library probably had no clue what was in the book, they can't read everything that comes through their doors. the girl likely thought it was just a romance manga with cute boys. Dad (or whatever relation he is) saw this, decided that it contained inappropriate content for the girl, returned the book, and lodged a complaint. The library then responds with it's policy that prevents the librarians from keeping certain material out of peoples hands. Hopefully dad will discuss the 18+ sticker with the girl and why she should not check out such things and the library will rethink it's shelving arrangement.

i started going to library alone at 9. library was in the other side of town (around 30 minutes walk). what can i say, my parents trusted me, and i didnt let them down.dyre said:

Libraries are for children and cheapskates who won't support authors by buying their books. And I would have absolutely no problem in having the later go without porn of any stripe so that the former is not exposed to it.

The parental responsibility clause in the library policies, which the parents had to agree to abide by to use the library, place the blame firmly on the uncle or parents who should have checked what the girl was checking out before it was allowed. It is not the job of the library staff to monitor everyone's check out, and who knows, this could have been her handing it to him to check out on his card, so it went from his hands to the library staff.FelixG said:

When I was a kid we went to the library on our own, checked books out on our own, we didnt have parents lording over us inspecting what we did because apparently they werent as paranoid back then.
When I was a kid we also had an "adult" section for any violent or sexual material, and those shelves? they were too high for kids to reach without an adult.
And what if she was on her own at the library, checked out the books, and then went on and read them before she ever came back in contact with her parents? Hell, she didnt even need to check them out to read them, she could have just sat there in the isle. If you really think that she needed a freaking parent playing bodyguard this isnt the topic for you anyways, because youre going to miss the damn point.
The library doesnt need to carry that crap, from yaoi manga to 50 shades of grey, theres not really any artistic or learning purpose, if you MUST have smut, at least put it in its own (fiction you morons) section so it doesnt get mixed up in a little girl's comic book collection. Im not keeping the libraries afloat with my money so they can peddle porn to kids, if youre not gonna be responsible ADULTS then open a friggin bookstore instead.

My local library has their adult and regular manga separate. Regular manga is in the teens section, adult manga are upstairs in their own little world next to the fantasy books. I believe there is also a system in place that when someone registers a card they are required to put their date of birth. Than the system wont let them check out the more racy books that are listed as above their age range.
I liked the reply from the library. It basically said, "Hey, someone wanted this book and requested it. If they're going to read the thing, then there must be a market out there where other people will also read it. Furthermore, just like the television and computer, you should be watching what your kid rents. Happy parenting!"

Excellent. I like that the library stood their ground. This man has the right to be as upset as he wants to be, but he's taking it up with the wrong people.
Policy is policy, and once again, the parents are at fault for not paying attention to what their children do in their day-to-day lives.

As for KCLS, good on them for standing firm. Limiting access to content should be a parent's responsibility, and if they want to relinquish that responsibility (which is certainly within their prerogative) then they shouldn't complain about the results. This father is not right to be "outraged". This father should take responsibility.

I think a 10 year old looking at porn is wrong but it happens in fact I'd be surprised by a kid not managing to have viewed porn by age 13 and if it's going to happen no matter what then I hope happens at the library finding it there is better then where most kids get their first taste of porn the internet, at least the library has limit to the type of stuff they carry.
