I consider Gearbox to be the Anti-Valve.

They may not be able to deliver a fantastic game consistently, but they do get things finished on time and on budget. I suspect this is why publishers keep giving them money to make games*.

Any company funding games will likely know what a develoepr can do given a set time and budget, given that Gearbox has ahd 18months to finish DN:F from whatever pile of scraps they got delivered to their door, Take Two probably had a good idea of what would come out the other end. I'll bet they just wanted the damn thing done and out so they could get some return on all that investment.
Passion says it all in this game, it's the love that the dev team have for this game, they risk, they sweat, they cry (they HAD TO DELAY IT), but they pulled it off, and delivered a game NO LESS THAN DUKE 3D! what more do people want? did they really want a "serous dark tone" story in this? I think GearBox did fine, consider this game is probably a bloody mess when they got it, to finish a game in 18 MO? it's a freaking miracle compare to HL-ep3! also this demos how cool Unreal Engine is!

However, that whole Los Vegas strip club for promo thing is totally unnecessary...

That's awesome. And yes, say what you will about Gearbox, but they made a business decision in picking up DNF. What better way to get lots of sales than buying a game in progress, and the butt end of the game world for never being released, polishing it off and taking in the money.
A bad business decision. Have you seen the sales figures? They may as well have thrown money out the window and saved the dev. time.
I did see that it became the highest-selling game in the UK for a while. I find it hard to believe it's gone from that to terrible.

Selling any amount in a small space of time looks great; sell one hundred copies of a game when no other game is a recent release and you've become the most popular game without breaking a sweat.

They released it when they did for a reason. Now that the (very short lived) fever has worn off, they would be lucky to make back the money they spent on it, let alone all the time that could have been much better spent elsewhere.

Why are people hating on the game? I dont get it...

I play it for Pc... dont get any problems, runs fine, it has really good graphics, interactivity with the world, platforming and action scenes (wich breaks from the generic cover/ shoot mechanics), it has a good sense of humour, a good array of weapons, and hey... its over 8 hours... like im comparing to the crappy 4 hour long games you love so much..

Its not the same has the previous nukes... the personna of duke doesnt fit this modern age, and the gameplay is different, but still fun.

The game has puzzles and good details... it plays well, the sound is awesome and works fine...

So could anyone tell me... whats wrong with the game? Cuz i cant find the reason...
I fail to see why I should like a game that treats my sex as playthings to stick your knob in and paints rape as something to be laughed at. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

And yet, was it worth it in the long run? Probably not...
In terms of what he got outside of the game alone, well, maybe. That keyboard is pretty amazing.

This is a pretty cool move on Gearbox's part, they really don't deserve all the hate they're getting (Not to mention, I personally didn't think the game was that bad at all.)

Also, last time I checked, DNF was a financial success for Gearbox. Keep in mind, after all, that they didn't have to invest all the money that 3D Realms put into it over 14 years of development, they only had to fund the bit of work to finish the game and fund the marketing.

You can blame 3D Realms - They actually made most of the finished product.

On the other hand, they probably should of rebooted the mess.

Bad Girl kind of did that with men in her boss fight in No More Heroes. (Seriously, she had hundreds of guys that were willingly in gimp suits and liked getting beaten around the head with a bat.)

If there was a game that treated men like sex toys (I'm sure there are many, just not well known. At least nowhere near as well known as Duke Nukem), and most of the humor came from woman on man and man on man rape jokes (The man on man thing is kind of already there. Check out how many people joke about prison ass rapings in some of the threads about LulzSec.)

I'd totally not care in the slightest, provided that it was a good game. Then I'd willingly shell out the cashola and play it even.

Of course, I don't consider Duke Nukem to be a good game, but some of the people on this thread seem to have liked it at least.

Now if only Gearbox had more than a year to work on a fourteen year doomed game, and maybe it would be up to the same standards they hold their other games to.
(FTFY.)

It's almost like... they only had it for 6% of its total development time and did all that they could without completely making the game from scratch?! :O

I swear, I haven't seen one article without something stupid in it in over a year.

OT: It's cool Gearbox is taking care of the things 3D Realms was to retarded to do. Hopefully now that they own the IP, they will be making a better Duke game than that 3D Realms trash.
This a thousand times over.

You have no idea how much this statement made my blood boil. That and the implication that Gearbox alone finished the game. As for the news, Slash000 deserves it. He waited 10 years for the preorder to be honored, and Gearbox decided to make it extra special.
