Square Enix Denies Final Fantasy VII Rerelease Rumors

Square Enix CEO claims that a remake right now would cast a death sentence on the series.

Less than a week after line [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118025-Upcoming-Final-Fantasy-VII-Rerelease-Appears-on-Square-Enix-Site] - comes with an admission that recent titles in the series just haven't been of the same quality.

When asked the inevitable question about a possible FF7 remake at a Q&A session as part of Square Enix's annual shareholders' briefing, Wada expressed a desire to create a new Final Fantasy game that surpasses VII before retreading old ground. He went on to say that although the team would be happy to work on a remake, it would have to be taken seriously, as the title is "revered as a 'divine game'". This echoes the sentiment of lead character designer Tetsuya Nomura, who last month acknowledged fans' appetite [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117290-Square-Enix-Still-Isnt-Remaking-FF7] for a remake, whilst saying that new titles would have to take precedence over such a project.

Wada's remarks fortify the company's official line of "no comment" on the recent leak, which saw a site registered to the company suggesting the existence of an enhanced PC rerelease. A similar leak from Steam this time last year hasn't yet turned up an actual release, and it could well turn out that this will also come to nothing. Whatever the case is, though, it's clear that for now those waiting on an official announcement of a remake will have to wait a little while longer.

Death sentence on the game? :/ I don't think they quite get how much some people want it on Steam alone.

Guess it's their loss, they don't seems to be able to make good Final Fantasy games anymore.

Why? Why do people want a remake of a game they have already played and love so badly? I know they've done it with Final Fantasy I-IV, so I can kind of see where everyone is coming from, but wouldn't it be better if they focused on making a new Final Fantasy that was good?

I guess I'll never understand, but then again, my favorite FF title was VIII, so people will never understand me either.

Franchise, not game. He's saying if they were to remake FF7 now, there wouldn't be interest/funding to continue making new FF games afterward, either because it wouldn't return sufficient funding for what the project would cost or because people would see the FF7 remake and compare it to the newer games and decide new FF games will always be worse than FF7 was so why bother buying any new ones, or a number of other possible reasons.

He's saying it would be bad for the series to do this, not bad for that specific game.

It will be like Duke Nukem Forever. After how many years that game was in development, nothing would have lived up to hype and expectations. Same with FF7. It is a game that people wants, to the point that any talk of the contrary was dismissed. It will fail to live up to expectations.

As for Steam, it is a case of people think they want it. It better be stellar or they will hate it.

Just because you don't like them does not mean they aren't good games.

Why would they re release it? it keeps fans coming back to them whenever a 'leak' comes around.

I can understand their logic. In a way FFVII is haunting them. They don't want to risk reminding everyone that they can't top a game they made almost 15 years ago. And as we all know, considering FF's stale and repetitious formula, SquareEnix doesn't like taking any risks on their favorite franchise.

Sensible decision. It would ruin SE to release FFVII right now, you'd get people saying the the new games aren't good enough, other people saying the games were never good to start with.

Re-releasing FFX on the other hand would be brilliant... it would remind everyone that linear FF games can be good, that the combat could be fun, that there have been good games in relatively recent times number wise.

Of course lots of people hated FFX and they'd continue too, but to be honest, they're probably too far gone to enjoy a JRPG Square Enix style, at least rereleasing FFX would resolidfy the shaking base that Final Fantasy has right now (and I'm saying that as someone who enjoyed XIII)

You've got to wonder whether Square is allergic to money, making their fans happy and consumer loyalty, but the catchpa says it all: foregone conclusion

While my somewhat drunken ass may be wrong (FU JD & Coke), They are rereleasing FFX in HD on PSN?

OT: Y U NO GIVE US WHAT WE WANT!? I can only play the greatly outdated original so many times...

Hey squareenix maybe the solution is...MAKE A GOOD FINAL FANTASY?
10 was just...ahh I hated that stupid story and how everything was so BORING (quit playing after a few hours still can't bring myself to go back)
13 after hours of walking in a straight line and not knowing which ...'cie was which and all the characters seeming like idiots I quit.

Never tried 12 that any better?

EDIT-its like they think people can't go on psn and buy final fantasy 7 or play their ps1 copy on pc people still play it we haven't forgotten that 7 was good just because time passed and we'll never forget whether you re-release or not
Now if you want to have fat stacks I'd suggest re-releasing 7.

If you want to be cool Release Final Fantasy Collection which would include 1-12.

I understand. I loved 8. It is my third favorite behind 9 and 10.

12 had good gameplay but the story was just a bad Return of the Jedi rip off without anything as cool as the force, lightsabers or Darth Vader.

OT: Would it be better if SE released a good, new Final Fantasy. Yes. The only problem is that based on the last few FF games (anything from X-2 onwards), it seems that they are incapable of doing so.

What? There was no denial of a rerelease, only of a remake. This says absolutely nothing about the possibility of a minor update (bugfixes, compatibility, achievements, etc) to the 1998 PC version.

P.S. Thanks

So how about remaking Final Fantasy 6 then SE? Or would that ruin the franchise too?

I don't really care for a re-release or remake, but I know for a fact that it would sell for the obvious reason of people wanting it.

Ok Square how about this? Make a good game and your fans will probably call it even.

Because this:

It's almost like they're saying "We could do it if we wanted but we're not going to". Seriously, if they had never released that tech demo then people wouldn't be looking for a full fledged remake so badly. Combine that with the absolutely crazy fighting scenes of Advent Children, as well as the incorporation of a new combat system, for instance the one used in Crisis Core or Kingdom Hearts. and you've got the potential for a very good game.
