Why? Why do people want a remake of a game they have already played and love so badly? I know they've done it with Final Fantasy I-IV, so I can kind of see where everyone is coming from, but wouldn't it be better if they focused on making a new Final Fantasy that was good?

I guess I'll never understand, but then again, my favorite FF title was VIII, so people will never understand me either.
Because this:

So... You want an entire remake of an old classic just so it can be prettier?
No. Because of the reasons that I stated in the part of my post that you cut out....for some reason. I suppose I'll just repeat myself though and say the main reason people want it so bad is because Square Enix gave us a huge cock tease and then went silent on the matter, coming out every now and then saying "Nope, not gonna happen definitely not gonna happen." then following that up with "Here's what it would take to do it..." and then following THAT up with "We'll only do it if....".

They're basically trolling the fans and doing a very good job of it.
I cut that out because that's not a reason for wanting it.

I hereby state that I might - in the future - decide to give you a bundle of sticks. Is that enough to make you desperately want a bundle of sticks? Is it now a "huge cock tease" if I don't give you a bundle of sticks?

What's the reason (besides having it look prettier) that you want FFVII to be remade?
Because it's a game I'd be interested in playing and I'm a fan of the series? Isn't that usually the reason people like to see a game being made? Having said that, once I got over the hype from the tech demo I came to accept that it's most likely never gonna happen. I'm not crying out for a remake or anything but I'd sure as hell play it if they actually did it.

Because we can show the new generation of JRPG players how amazing an actual FF story can be (9 is my favourite story, 8 for gameplay and 7 for just being 7)
Alrighty, now that's a reason I can understand.

Serious question (as in - I don't have an answer in mind myself): Do you think encouraging the "new generation" to play the original FFVII (by - for example - making it cheaply available on Steam) might do enough to encourage the Square-Enix employees of tomorrow to make a new Final Fantasy game in the spirit of FFVII, without making a remake? Or do you think - in order to have the right impact - a version of FFVII with up-to-date graphics is needed/wanted?

But would you be more interested in playing a remake of a game that you already know the story to, over a brand new game of the same quality?

I always got the impression that the Final Fantasy games are all fairly story-focused (I've only played VII myself, and didn't make it to the end). In which case, a new story would seem to be better than story where you already know what's going to happen.

It's tough to say really. I mean as much as I'd love to see a brand new Final Fantasy with the kind of quality and story we've come to expect....well....I haven't been able to bring myself to play through XII and XIII more than once and while Versus XIII is looking good, nobody even know what the deal with that is development-wise.

So I guess I'd rather go for something that I definitely know I'd enjoy. Know what I mean?

I understand the feeling. The trouble is, I lean towards the belief that either
a) Square Enix "gets" what they did right with VII, and are therefore capable of making a new game which is as good.
or b) Square Enix doesn't get what they did right, and will only ruin VII if they remake it, by "updating it" to be more like their recent titles.

I do not buy that it would kill the franchise. Going by that, FF8 wouldn't sell at all because they had FF7. It just doesn't make sense. There will be new Final Fantasy games and as long as they think some more when making them they will sell really really well.
Half-Life was a GREAT game but people still bought HL2 because it too was a great game. People are going to buy the games next in the series because they see what the company can do.

I'm also quite sure that if they released it, they would rake in more than enough money for the development cost.
I didn't say I agree with him. I was just trying to clarify.

I will use this moment to say one thing; Cait Sith's sacrafice in the Temple was completely cheapened by having him turn up near instantly afterwards. I know they were trying to bring a comedy edge to it but it just seemed like, "Hey, heres this really dramatic character building moment whe- no, its ok, here he is again."
Erm...you know Cait Sith is just a doll, right? There's no dramatic sacrifice there; it's a joke from beginning to end. There's nothing cheapened by reminding you that a stuffed animal is still a stuffed animal.

Of course lots of people hated FFX and they'd continue too, but to be honest, they're probably too far gone to enjoy a JRPG Square Enix style
FFX is quite possibly my least favorite FF game (although I haven't played the newer ones after my experience with it). It's not like I can't still have fun playing Squeenix games, because I had a great time even with The Last Remnant. I just really hated the story and characters and voice acting of FFX. And to a lesser extent the gameplay. Heh.
I forgot about the voice acting controversy :D As for characters, I figure the people who hated the FFX characters were probably a lot of the same people who hated the XIII characters, so the divide is there.

I guess instead of SE JRPGs I should have specified the type of RPG that X and XIII were like. I don't think open worldy Skyrim RPGs are appropriate for FF and certainly not what I want in them and I think the linearity, cutscene based, big party character focused RPGs have a legitimate slot which should (and hopefully will) be continued, but whilst some people love it, it's definitely going to put off others.

I suppose FFXII was the anti FFX so there's no real reason for the series to stick to one direction, but then they'd just have to go off and the other direction and make a good game of that type I suppose because FFXII doesn't have the same strength of fandom as X (I feel), whereas they've got more of a base with the other style. Even VII ticks a lot of those boxes really. The open worldyness was more of an illusion than a thing
Yeah, I don't really think anything open world in that sense would fit either, but the only open world RPGs I've ever really liked are pencil-and-paper ones like D&D. As far as video games, I feel like it can work very well for games where the focus is more on the action (Just Cause 2, Burnout Paradise, Terraria, etc. were tons of fun), but I'm not convinced that the technology is quite there for RPGs yet. Aside from it being totally out of place for a JRPG like that, of course, which needs a lot more structure to it for the way it focuses more heavily on the characters and storytelling.

I'm not even completely unhappy/disappointed with what SE's been doing in the past decade or so, just mostly with their main-line franchises. I haven't been thrilled with FF or its spinoffs, and stuff like the Mana series might as well be dead at this point, but at least they try interesting ideas with new IPs or more obscures ones from time to time. The Last Remnant was a nice change of pace (at least the PC version, which actually worked), and every now and then they pull something like TWEWY out of their collective ass, so at least someone there still seems to be allowed to go nuts and try crazy things when there's less money and fewer expectations involved.
