Submerged "UFO" Cripples Nearby Electronics

The mysterious, UFO-like object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea appears to be emitting some kind of localized EMP.

Back in the summer of 2011, explorers discovered a large, disc-like object [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112055-Exploration-Team-Discovers-Mysterious-Disc-on-Ocean-Floor] lying 285 feet below the surface of the Baltic Sea. It was estimated to be about 20 meters in diameter, with a 200 meter flattened "trail" behind it, as though it had crashed and ground to a halt, and looked like nothing so much as the Millennium Falcon come to grief. Nobody knows what it is, but further investigation has revealed some rather baffling weirdness.

The object appears to be giving off some kind of interference that cripples nearby electronic devices. "Anything electric out there - and the satellite phone as well - stopped working when we were above the object," said Diver Stefan Hoberborn of the Ocean X team that initially discovered the disc and is now conducting further exploration. "And then we got away about 200 meters and it turned on again, and when we got back over the object it didn't work."

The team described the object as similar to "a huge mushroom, rising 3-4 meters from the seabed, with rounded sides and rugged edges." It has an egg-shaped hole at the top that leads inside, as well as "strange stone circle formations" that resemble "small fireplaces."

"We have experienced things that I really couldn't imagine and I have been the team's biggest skeptic regarding these different kind of theories," said Ocean X founder Peter Lindberg. "I was kind of prepared just to find a stone or cliff or outcrop or pile of mud but it was nothing like that, so for me it has been a missing experience I must say."

"I can't explain what we saw, and I went down there to answer questions, but I came up with even more questions," added Hogeborn.

The process of discovering what this thing actually is has been a slow one, due to both weather issues and, more importantly, a lack of funding. Another dive is scheduled "in the coming weeks," however, which may shed more light on its true nature.

I hope this isn't a hoax by Ocean X in order to secure more funding, colour me interested yet somewhat sceptical.

I'm assuming the boat they were on uses hydraulic actuators instead of electronic ones because you know, EMP and all.

I was going to say that this looked to be an interesting story that could have some major ramifications, but then...

Yeah, no. Mark my words, it's a fake. Though to be honest, I doubt even the Daily Mail would do a story like this. If it was published by them, the article would be titled some like:
Immigrants come from spaceship at the bottom of the ocean, give you cancer via EMP

Am I bad for wanting it to zap their boat with a laser?

What? it would make good news!

Okay, I don't care about the contents of this article because the sub-head pisses me off.

"UFO-like object." Really? Don't you know what UFO stands for? Unidentified Flying Object.

Time for some insight into the English language. One, that choice of words is redundant and two, *picks up a megaphone* UFO does not mean an alien space ship. UFO by itself literally means a flying object that hasn't been identified.

It could be a space ship. It could be a weather balloon. It could be a vulture having a scandalous affair with an otter. When a flying object is unidentified, that means there are possibilities. None of which have to center on extra-terrestrials.

Tourist trips: Diver Peter Lindberg is hoping to take wealthy tourists down in this submarine to see the object
Let me guess, the submarine stops working if it gets too close. So people cannot go closer to investigate the object.

That's why they're planning tourist trips before they get down to some proper research, right?

Smells rather fishy to me.

My money is that's it's an iron rich meteorite.

Or aliens.

Both are totally plausible explanations.

Welp...

If Fairfield turns up at the front of the boat a day later and begins smashing faces in with his undead fists, we'll know to run.

Pretty sure back when this was first reported it turned out to be something to do with the way the ocean floor scanning equipment does its sweeps or something.

Either way, I wouldnt take this too seriously with the Daily Mail being one of the sources.

This all smells of hoax 'to secure funding'. While I myself have always been curious to know what exactly it is, I don't but into the extra terrestrial space craft story that has been attached to it.

Sorry, but the correct term is "USO" as in "Unidentified Submerged Object." Look it up.

In my opinion it is the face of the worldwide conspiracy hell-bent on brainwashing everyone into being interested in Geology.

By which I mean it's probably just a rock. A slightly more interesting than usual rock.

I wouldn't get those hopes up too much. Everything is pointing to exactly that.

-- ragtag group of would-be treasure hunters just so happen to find something incredible? Check

-- Secure documentary and film deals to explore further? Check

-- Claim that after exploring it, they still don't know anything about it? Check.

-- Claim that "emp" fields are interfering with their ability to use their equipment? Check.

I've seen this story before about a billion times. Hoax, hoax, and more hoax.

It took them an entire year to realise it was "crippling" all nearby electronics? Right...

Yeah I think your right, still it was a rather giddy feeling hearing of this strange mysterious object, I clearly wasn't being Media Savvy while reading this article... still it is pretty cool.

They should totally make a blockbuster film about it, where a group of cocky Marines go to investigate and are trapped in a titanic yet boring battle with aggressors of unknown origins... I'm calling Hollywood now, this is foolproof

Surely you can do better than that? We all know you can't have a sensational Daily Fail headline that doesn't lament on the effect that this will have on house prices on top of everything else.
