Boobjam Seeks Busty Games Sans Tittillation

Games journalist Jenn Frank has created a new online collaborative event which asks game developers to create titles centered on breasts that do not exist purely for teenagers to drool over.

Boobjam isn't just the best-titled event of the year, it's also an international call for game developers to create games about breasts that haven't been sexualized (or, at the very least, that haven't been sexualized in the stereotypically masculine way that we, as gamers, are all so familiar with). If you're scratching your head, just look at the image embedded at right, then imagine the opposite of that.

The sole criteria for entry in Boobjam is that developers "make a game that talks about boobs without resorting to the 'straight male gaze.'" Normally this is where I'd define the term, but c'mon, you people have played videogames before, right? So you know exactly what she's referring to. The vast, vast majority of female characters in videogames exist purely to give puberty a helping hand.

Whether that's personally problematic for you hinges on all kinds of variables, but the fact remains that the depiction of breasts in games is objectively one-sided. Boobjam hopes to change that by rallying developers to create games that might, say, offer comprehensive instructions on how to check one's own breasts for potentially dangerous lumps. Or maybe there's a superhero made of breasts. Point being: These games, though centered on boobs, are supposed to be about far more than attractive curves and unattainable standards of perkiness.

As a straight male, my opinion on these matters is admittedly a bit skewed, so why don't we get an explanation straight from Boobjam's creator?

There is an incredible range of experience invested in having (or not having, or newly having) boobs. But in most video games, boobs are this male gaze thing-they're there for (almost always) one reason, to titillate (one type of) players. And that's okay-lots of people like boobs!-but there are so many other ways to talk about them. Boobs mean a lot of different things to different people. They aren't two adjustable or removable objects, even though we do culturally think about them that way. They are, in fact, a part of a human body.

What do boobs mean to a new mother, or to a new woman? To a person in actual, physical pain? What might they mean to a real superhero or armor-clad warrior? Or, if boobs really are sexual objects, who, besides straight dudes, can sexualize them?

No one is claiming that a great rack doesn't have its place in gaming canon. But instead of having the same conversation over and over, why not try having a new discussion altogether?

Let's demystify boobs!

Get it now? Boobjam is an ostentatious counterpoint to stereotypically male-centric game development. Again, hate the idea if you'd like, but personally I'm all about tearing down society's cliché ideals, and there's simply nothing more cliché than the idea that everything should be about me simply because I've got external genitalia.

If you'd like further details on Boobjam, you can find absolutely everything relating to the 'jam on its official Tumblr page [http://theboobjam.tumblr.com/]. Also, many low resolution renderings of pixelated breasts, because it's that kind of event.

So what IS the boob-centered opposite of Tomb Raider?

The characters jabber about boobs non-stop, but they wear baggy clothing?

Also, I'm assuming you mean "titillation". Otherwise, you have the world's stupidest pun in your title.

That's a typo, but I'm pretty sure it's still a horribly stupid pun.

Ok...I have now seen the weirdest thing on this website today. Maybe it is time for me to get to bed.

This...umm...has an...something about creativity...I actually don't know what to say other then fact that while the guy has good intention, I can't but fear that this might be one of the silliest gaming making events that I've seen yet.

But sure, let's get excited about this. See what crazy stuff people will create for this event.

Somehow, the typo made it worse. :p

But yeah, I'm not sure what they're going for with Boobjam. Nursing Simulator? Nudist Colony Tycoon? Uber Cancer Fighter Shooter?

How about we don't focus on boobs, and instead focus on just the female characters being presented reasonably normally? It kills two birds with one stone that way.

Hmm, this sounds intriguing. Since a significant portion (something like 80%) of women wear the wrong size bra, why not make a game about bra fitting? And when your character has found the perfect bra, she has to fight Brazilla (a massive reptile who eats bras?)... or something. I would play it.
EDIT: And Bioware should make it. Star Wars: The Phantom Brassiere. It could work.

An interesting idea if nothing else, I'm interested to see if anything interesting comes of this.

Baby milking simulator. A lot of men find that gross, for some reason, making it absolutely ideal.

P.S. Thanks

80%? Damn, just go to a shop and ask them to fit you ... I know a girl who did it for a laugh and got told she was a size bigger than she thought, went from a C to a D in a couple of seconds. I thought she was in the minority, not the overwhelming majority.

Anyway, seems like an interesting idea but I see this just turning into a porn gallery to many or those weird and awful sex flash games.

I can get the idea behind "de-sexying" boobs but guys eyes are drawn to boobs like a moth to a flame, we know going looking at them is bad but we just can't help it.

Oh, a game in which you must try to dress comfortably in male clothes while dealing with your breasts. Especially fun for medieval armour!

Yeah, it's a really common problem. Usually women wear bras that are too big in the band and too small in the cup. The problem with just going to a shop to get fitted is that there is no guarantee that you'll get fitted properly. Victoria's Secret is the largest lingerie retailer in the US and it's pretty common to get poorly fitted at their stores. That's why it would be beneficial for women if they knew how to measure themselves.

I thought it was like shoes, you know if you get the wrong size shoes, they are either flopping round or a foot vice but when you get a nice fitting pair it's like a foot glove. I just figured it was the same for bra's, if it fits comfortably then it's the right size.

Well the thing is that a lot of women grow up wearing ill fitting bras and hence they don't always recognize the signs of poor fit. And plenty of women hate wearing bras and complain about them, but it seems to be more common to assume that that's just what bras are like, they're uncomfortable and annoying instead of thinking that hey, maybe I'm not wearing the right size. And there's tons of reasons why women usually assume the former instead of the latter.

Yeah I agree with the sentiment here but their idea seems kind of stupid.

I have two main gripes with the industry on this topic. Now I love boobs. They're wonderful and come in many different enticing shapes and sizes. So maybe it's just my personal tastes but I hate how game developers seem to try to create and fill their entire game with the exact same pair of 'perfectly' shaped big boobs. My second complaint, when a female character is visually made to appear sexy but this 'asset' gets completely ignored within the setting and story of the game itself. They game is designed to be visually appealing to the player but in a 4th wall breaking manner they could care less about any in-game effect a females beauty/sexiness may have and just ignore it. She's just their for the player to look at, and that's just plain lazy and demeaning.

Not that all games should be kept to the same rigid structure, some people will still like the shameless stuff and if games like Tera Online are getting made that appeals to that demography then there's nothing wrong with that. You just need more variety, and especially have to take more care in big budget games that are meant to have a wide appeal.

Boob gun! And make them awesome and take the whole thing straight-facedly serious!...What? Maybe if boobs were more like a wacky super power than a 'steamy sex symbol' they'd be onto something.

I'm going with boob guns. *nods*

Do guys just have some kind of mental block when it comes to thinking up 'things to do with boobs' besides oogle or touch them. Come on guys, Austen Powers was totally on to something with that!
