Cliff Bleszinski Wants to Return to His PC-Based Deathmatch Roots
Cliff: "A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty- I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is."
Back in the day, legendary designer Cliff Bleszinski made his name working on adrenaline-soaked games like Unreal Tournament. While his later work on the Gears of War franchise slowed things down by introducing chest-high walls, he now wants to get back to his roots and make a kick-ass PC arena shooter, according to an interview on an episode of the [a href=http://www.deathsquad.tv/pointless-41/]Pointless Podcast.[/a]
"I have a slide deck, I have a pitch, I have concept art, I know pretty much what I want to do," Bleszinski said. "It will be a PC experience that will hearken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on." Later on, he stated that this mystery game kicking around in the back of his mind is a "first-person shooter. It's in my DNA." Apparently he really wants to reset the clock on AAA games, stating that "I don't ever want to make a game that has a cutscene or a scripted sequence in it ever again."
Bleszinski [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119936-Cliff-Bleszinski-Leaves-Epic-Games]left Epic[/a] last year to strike out on his own. While he says that the game he has in mind isn't indie sized, he wouldn't go back to Epic either. "What I want to do is something that is familiar, yet different. I don't want to work with the old guard, per se... The last thing I need is some marketing guy saying, 'Well, traditionally this doesn't sell well'... They're all rearward-looking, and it just drives me f****** bats***." Perhaps the fickle gods of Kickstarter might be willing to patron this potential passion project?
