Are we suppose to believe he was under some kind of Epic spell for a decade now and that was the sole source of his interesting comments on PC gaming... it's hard to tell which way you will swing from day to day Mr. B.

I could really kill for a new arena shooter these days, and funnily enough we were just talking about it on the forums but this man would not be my first choice, or a choice at all, yes UT2004 is my very favourite multiplayer game I just can't imagine Bleszinski remembers how that came into existence.

No, but when he starts talking about moving back to a platform whose users he did nothing but dump shit on for several years it's reasonable enough to point out the hypocrisy.

This is exactly what I've always wanted from young Clifford. Give me back my arena shooter, it's been far too long.

Well I still have a Microsoft WMO 1.1 somewhere and an old CRT so I think I'm ready.

Imagine a CliffyB Kickstarter. I'd back that. I don't care what he said about PC gamers. He wasn't talking about PC gamers like myself. He was talking about pirates and whiners. And to be honest, they exist in large numbers.

Lol so after abandoning PC gaming because he wanted to chase the console dollar he wants to try and get back in our good graces by acting like all the sh*t he talked about us never happened. Cliff.... I don't how else to say this but... You can go eat a ****.

Aye. Going to have to pick a direction there Cliff.

Regarding "pc arena shooters", I cut my teeth on Half Life DM. If I wanted to experience that again I would just load up HLDM again. Hell, the other day I had a nostalgia trip regarding Quake 3; thanks to Steam, I was playing it 20 minutes later.

Dont get me wrong, I appreciate it can be difficult to create an innovative game but I think the way to start doing so would be to forget about all the past titles and current titles and try and think of something fresh. This sounds very much like he plans to pump out a mediocre clone and market it with the "its retro!" vibe.

Apparently he wants to reset the clock on everything he said about PC gamers being pirates and whiners, too.

In his mind, we won't remember all the really dickish things he has said about PC gamers in hopes that we will just throw money at him for what will probably be 'not-unreal but really is'.

Guess when the money starts to run out from being a paid shill of Microsoft... you'll do anything.
PC gamers, "Never forgive, never forget"

.....that is unless you're Sim City, Diablo III, StarCraft II, Call of Duty MW2-onward, Battlefield 4, or generally any decent looking AAA game, because your desperate, whiny hypocrites that will buy it anyway. Whether it be Bungie's new game or Cliffs

-coming from a PC gamer, of course.

A new arena shooter? Count me in. I have no idea why everyone's so mad about this guy, nor do I particularly care as long as I get a decent, no bullshit, balls-to-the-walls shooter. Gotta go fast after all.

Seriously, the GoW series couldn't stand any more apart from typical modern shooters, stop trying to group them together.

Color me intrigued, Cliffy B may be king douche of douche mountain, but imo he's a damn good developer, one of the best in the industry, even if he is the master of foot-in-mouth PR.

@all the Blezinski haters: Have any of you actually fully read all of what he's saying? Or did you all just read some headlines and then jump to conclusions?

For starters, read this all the way [http://dudehugespeaks.tumblr.com/post/53457606850/brutal-honest-thoughts-on-this-whole-debacle] and then tell me that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

OT: Thank goodness. Unreal fans have been screaming for a good sequel to UT for a while now since UT3 was lackluster to say the least.
Well perhaps all this negative attidude from what he's saying has a lot to do with the shit flinging he said towards PC gamers for YEARS now.

On top of other stupid things he said.

I'd be calling bullshit too, if a high profile deve who did a whole lot of name calling and degradation to a specific platform of players is all of a sudden praising PC as the highest game form.

Sounds good. Unreal Tournament 3 was one of the first games I wanted when I first got my 360, and it provided a hell of a lot of fun. The fact that he had a hand in making my favorite TPS is even better.

Cliff has made amazing arena shooters before, and if given the resources, I bet he could again.

And what does wanting to make an Arena shooter do for the entire industry and those "COD kids?", absolute fuck all to be honest, especially if he's going to declare support for one specific platform that he's lambasted in the past.

I don't think we need an Arena shooter, I think we need one that could be on all platforms, none of this one way street bullshit.

Most of the "haters" aren't questioning his knowledge. There's a bit of irony in telling people to get the whole story when you don't seem interested in what people are actually saying in the first place.

Arnoxthe1 said:
Yep. And you know what? I actually liked GoW3. And I'm hardly a "dudebro."
I enjoyed Black Ops 2, and I'm an ambidextrous bisexual. Using one's self as an argument against a trend doesn't tend to prove much.

...Unless you do think that by my example, your standard Call of Duty player is ambidextrous and bisexual.

What you're saying is analogous to responding to "smoking causes cancer" with "I smoke, and I don't have caner." Which is great for you. It doesn't really mean much.

Or, maybe a more apt example, people denying that MLP is for kids by saying they watch it and theyr're hardly kids. Well, that's nice, but are they the intended audience? I doubt the show would be on the air without kids supporting it. And without the dudebros, Marcus would be sitting on the side of the road with a sign saying "will bromance for food."

Just when he tries to court the people he's previously bitched and moaned about in a stunning display of stupidity, short-sightedness and/or hypocrisy.

Seriously, man, this is a strange time to be drawing a line in the sand.

Except the fanbase, which is what largely defines a dudebro shooter as dudebro.

Oh, and being one of the big pioneers of regenerating health as a trend.

And the propensity for narrow halls and smaller environments.

And the slow, lumbering hulk of a man deal.

And a large dose of gritty brownness.

And....Seriously, do I need to go on? Gears was a regular trailblazer in pretty much every matter that brought the dudebros to the yard. And that includes the stuff he's complaining modern gamers are familiar with. It's almost on par with the creators of the Walking Dead claiming we are into too much zombie material or something.

And you know what? Dudebro shooters are fine. There's no real reason for people to be bothered by the label. That doesn't really change the market. Gears titles are not some counter-culture gaming phenomenon. They were some of the Xbox's biggest sellers, especially the early ones. I hear the last couple haven't fared as well. I don't care too much, as my interest waned during 2. But honestly, whatever floats people's boat.

VonBrewskie said:
yesssssssssssssssss. Whatcha got Cliffy-B? Time for some bad-ass rocket jumping and railguns. Let these kiddos get some real action. They'll friggin' love it!
That's...Rather optimistic.

It seems more likely the "kiddies" in question will stick with the familiar. Just because there exists a predecessor genre doesn't mean that everyone in the successor genre cares. That's not to say people will never buy this. And if people want an arena shooter, good for them. Personally, I could do without any genre of shooter for a while, but it seems the market still thinks everything has to be a shooter, so that ain't happening.

But to assume "the kiddies" are going to love it is similar to a grandfather assuming his grandkids are going to enjoy the same sort of media he did.

To be fair, being on consoles never stopped his complaints about used game sales or how beta testing games on consoles is a pain-in-the-ass when console users aren't able to tweak the game under the hood like PC gamers.

At least he's consistent.

OT: Whatever your opinion of him might be, you can't deny he's a good designer (GoW's visual style was out of his hands and actually wasn't something he ever approved of). I'll keep a lookout.

Prove that the Gears of War fan base is entirely dudebros and not just gamers that enjoy shooters.

They didn't pioneer regenerating health, that started a generation earlier with Halo:CE's regenerating shields.

Halls and narrow environments? Not likely, the majority of GoW combat takes place in open spaces with lots of cover.

Slow lumbering hulk of a man? That might actually be relevant...if men were the only characters and they only had one body type. Neither of these things are true, and neither of them are relevant to games like Call of Duty.

Gritty browness isn't exclusive to dudebro games, and in GoW's case the aesthetic is borrowed from post-apocalyptic film because Gears of takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. It is an intentional design choice that is appropriate to the setting, not a simple following of the trend.

Uhm, what? Cliff mentioned arena shooters and marketers being rear-facing. Gears of War is not an arena shooter and even though the game play is reminiscent of other third person shooters it was not common at the time.

If the only qualifier for being a "dudebro" game is being popular then I scratch my head to think what you must believe games like Elder Scrolls, GTA and Super Mario Brothers actually are.

Fine. I wasn't around back then news-wise so what exactly was he saying when he was supposedly taking a crap on PC gamers? Or anything you think is stupid.

He's not "praising PC as the highest game form", showing that you didn't really read the article.

Well colour me interested, lets see if you can do this without claiming that all pc gamers are pirates.
